In good pasture, located on an elevation in gently undulating terrain, with excellent views in all directions. This well preserved trivallate rath consists of a high circular platform (31m N–S; 27.6m E–W) defined by a substantial earthen bank, enclosed by a fosse with external bank, outside which is a second fosse with an external bank. The innermost bank (Wth 5.5m at N and S; int. H 1.3m at N and S; ext. H 2.5m at N, 3m at S) has a relatively broad and flat top. The internal slope has remnants of stone facing in the form of large, blocky stones protruding from the sod. Stones also protrude from the high external slope but appear more random; some may even be rock outcrop. The second/middle bank (Wth 3m at N and S; int. H 0.7m at N, 0.45m at S; ext. H 0.7m at N, 0.5m at S) is well defined for the W half of its circuit, but it is reduced at NNE−S to a flat, berm-like terrace. At SE–S this berm is almost flush with the level of the inner fosse, separated from it only by a narrow line of stones, possibly the remnants of a kerb. The third/outermost bank (Wth 2.5 at N, 3.2m at S; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1.4-1.6m) is steep-sided, with stones protruding randomly in parts around its circuit. It served as a field boundary and several field walls radiate from it to NW, NE, E and SW. It is possible that this outermost bank is not a primary feature. A section (L 6m) of it has been rebuilt with stone walling at SE. The rath entrance consists of a gap (Wth 2.9m) in the inner bank at ESE, with a large slab on the N inner face. It opens onto a slightly sunken passageway flanked by a low earth and stone bank leading across the innermost fosse to a corresponding gap in the second/middle bank. There is a hint of a causeway across the second fosse but no corresponding break is evident in the outermost bank. The entrance faces a broad low rise outside the rath which may have provided a natural access ramp or approach to the site. The rath interior is level and contains a souterrain (MA102-002002-), surface openings to which are evident in the SW quadrant and to W of centre as well as in the inner bank at WSW. Interior grassy; hawthorn and gorse on the perimeter, particularly on the W half. There is a rath (MA102-001----) 235m to N and an enclosure and a rath (MA102-052----; MA092-060001-) 270m and 363m to NW, respectively. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 23 September 2022 - MA102-002002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA102-002002-. In a rath (MA102-002001). This drystone-built souterrain branches in two directions through the W half of the rath, one passage extending in a gently curve through the centre of interior on a roughly NW−SE axis, and the other passage branching off it to W terminating in the inner bank at SW. It is evidenced at surface level by a number of surface openings, depressions and small areas of subsidence. In the S half of the interior, a grassed-over depression (2m NW–SE; 1.6-1.8m NE–SW; D 0.6m-1m) represents the collapsed SE end of a chamber/passage. At its NW end there is an opening (Wth 1m; H 0.68m) into the intact NW end (L 2m NW-SE) of the chamber/passage, with drystone side walls (H 1.5m) roofed with two in situ lintels. In the NW wall of this space, there is two-tiered creepway opening: This consists of a lintelled opening (Wth 0.6m; H 0.46m) at floor level, immediately above which is a second opening (Wth 0.63m; H 0.5m) roofed with two superimposed lintels. These stacked openings give onto a passage (L c. 7m; Wth 0.85-1m) which extends in a shallow curve to NW. The side walls are constructed of 3-4 courses of large stones and boulders with slight corbelling at top to support the roof lintels. The floor is earthen. At a point 1.4m to NW of the two-tier creepway, there is a pronounced earth and stone rise/bank (Wth 1m NW–SE) in floor level spanning the width of the passage. To NW of this the height of the chamber is reduced from c. 0.9-1m to 0.46m and the floor is strewn with stones. At its NW end the passage narrows (Wth 0.55m) and the floor rises slightly to a narrow opening (0.8m E–W; 0.6m N–S) at ground surface of the rath; it is not clear if this opening is an original entrance. Another passage branches to the SW from this passage. The opening into the second passage is located at floor level in the W wall of the main passage, 0.4m to NW of the two-tiered creepway. The opening (Wth 0.56m; H 0.3m) consists of two jamb stones supporting a lintel, and gives access to a small, low-roofed roughly D-shaped chamber (c. 2m NE–SW; c. 1m NW-SE), partly infilled with soil. The SE wall of the chamber is curving and the NW wall is straight. At its SW end, another lintelled opening flanked by two upright stones giving onto a passage, which extends for c. 3-4m to SW ending at the rath bank. At surface level, a small area of collapse adjacent to the bank reveals an in situ lintel, and another lintel is partly exposed in the inner face of the bank. In pasture, located on top of a rise utilising the natural fall of ground to S and W, with good views. This enclosure is recorded on an estate map (NLI Ms. No. 2713) drawn up in 1811 for Sir Robert Lynch-Blosse, where it is marked ‘Rath’ and indicated as a roughly circular enclosure crossed centrally on a N–S axis by the townland boundary. It is not shown the 1838 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps; although a curving field boundary (coinciding with the NE quadrant of the enclosure) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch edition. The remnants of a subcircular area (diam. c. 20m) can still be traced, overlain by the junction of the NNW-SSE townland boundary and an E-W field fence. The W half of the enclosure is evident as a slightly raised, semi-circular area (c. 20m N–S; 7m E–W) defined by a slight scarp marked by a growth of ferns and rushes. The NE quadrant is barely discernible, and the SE quadrant comprises a disturbed, irregular area partly defined by a curving scarp, which does not appear to align with the W half of the enclosure. A sub-rectangular depression (3m E–W; 4.5m N–S; D 0.5m) cuts through the SE quadrant.
