Situated along the boggy indented coastline of N Mayo. It has a good view along the coast and is overlooked by higher ground to the S and W. The headland is flanked by a steep gully on either side and a grassy steep slope leads down to the sea to the N. A triangular N-facing headland measuring 30m long and 30m wide is cut off from the mainland by a single earthen bank and ditch. The convex bank is round topped and visible only near either cliff edge. It stands 1.4m above the base of the ditch which is flat bottomed and 4m wide at the top. Only a faint rise in the ground level outside the ditch suggests that there was a counterscarp bank. An entrance causeway crosses the defences near the western cliff edge. Besides this the site is featureless. The interior is flat and level and is partly overgrown with ferns and reeds. The land outside the site is wet and it slopes gently down towards the fort. These descriptions are derived from the MA thesis of Markus Casey 1999 The coastal promontory forts of Ireland. A survey of counties Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Clare. Unpublished MA thesis, National University of Ireland, Galway. In this instance the entry has been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Situated along the N facing coast in an area of hilly bogland. Rising ground overlooks the site from the S. The headland is flanked by gullies into which streams flow on either side, and the view along the coast is excellent. A long narrow finger of land measuring 80m by 15m is cut off from the mainland by a short straight fosse running across the neck. This is 6m in width and is round-bottomed. A 1m high rise in the ground level immediately inside the fosse is the only trace of a bank. An earthen field fence runs along the outside of the fosse, obscuring any trace of a counterscarp bank. There is no trace of an entrance and the interior is featureless. Situated on a long ridge-backed promontory jutting out from the deeply indented coastline of N Mayo in an area of hilly bogland. The headland is flanked by steep cliffs and is overlooked by higher ground to the S. There is a good view along the coast and a freshwater stream runs through a nearby gully. A wide shallow curving fosse runs across the neck of the promontory. Its width varies between 4m and 6m and it averages 0.7m in depth. There is no entrance causeway and no trace of any bank. The interior measures 41m across and 104m long. Besides a path running through it, it is quite featureless. One of three promontory forts (MA006-009---, MA006-010---) along N-facing stretch of coastline. The site had not been previously recorded. Situated in an area of hilly fertile pastureland and sheep grazing. The W facing headland is overlooked by higher ground inland and is surrounded by sheer cliffs. A stream runs down the cliff face to the E. A roughly circular area measuring 45m E-W by 40m N-S is joined to the mainland by an 8m wide neck of land. This neck shows faint traces of a fosse with a revetted earth and stone bank lying outside the narrowest point of the isthmus. The interior slopes gently down to the NE and is featureless. Recent slippage of material has taken place along the western edge of the garth. One of three promontory forts (MA006-008----, MA 006-010----) along N facing stretch of coastline. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
