In Belleek Woods on the W bank of the River Moy, on the former estate of Belleek Manor. This is recorded as follows by de Valéra and Ó Nualláin (1964, appendix no. 11, 95-6): ‘This site is marked ‘Cromlech’ on the O.S. 6” 1837. The O.S. Letters state: “In Col. Gore’s demesne on a hill rising over the River Moy, there is a Druidical (or sepulchral ?) circle of stones. There are three upright stones on the summit of the hill, which evidently supported a cromlech, which was long since removed. The circle is, as usual, at the base of the hill. Col. Gore has erected (sunk) an ice house in the same hill, which future antiquarians will be apt to make part of a Druidical temple.” The hill has been used as a quarry and the whole is now planted with trees. At the edge of the quarry some large displaced stones may mark the site. The whole is extremely doubtful and cannot be accepted as the site of a megalithic tomb. Immediately to the south of the hill is a round mound which seems to be cairn of large stones.’ Date of upload: 17 April 2018 - MA030-053002: Mound, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA030-053002-. Located in Belleek wood on the W bank of the River Moy, on the former estate of Belleek Manor. This is not shown on the 1837 OS 6-inch map, but in shown on the 1930 edition as a roughly circular hachured feature, with the site, a possible megalithic structure (MA030-053001-), named ‘Cromlech’, located immediately to N. It was recorded by de Valéra and Ó Nualláin (1964, appendix no. 11, 95-6): as ‘a round mound which seems to be cairn of large stones.’ It appears as a roughly circular rise or mound with a circular summit (diameter c. 10-15m) and broadly sloping sides, which give an overall diameter of c. 50-55m. The large stones noted by de Valéra and Ó Nualláin are not now visible. The nature of this mound is uncertain. On the N outskirts of Ballina town, located at the edge of a marshy, water-logged area, with rising ground to S and W. This fulacht fia was discovered during archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping in advance of a development project, and was subsequently fully excavated (licence no. 98E0284) in 1989 (King 1998). It consisted of a low mound (13.5m N–S; 11.5m E–W; H 0.2-0.5m) of heat-shattered stones (sandstone and limestone) in a matrix of black soil and charcoal fragments. The mound had been levelled in the past, and cut through by an 18th/19th-century drain and by a modern pit containing a horse skeleton. A trough was found beneath the NE edge of the mound. It was oval (L 1.55m NE–SW; D 0.55m) in plan, with steeply sloping sides and a concave base. During the excavation, the trough was noted to fill naturally with water. Another fulacht fia (MA030-103----), located 20m to SE, was also excavated. (King 1998). On the N outskirts of Ballina town, located at the edge of a marshy, water-logged area, with rising ground to S and W. This fulacht fia was discovered during archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping in advance of a development project, and was subsequently fully excavated (licence no. 98E0284) in 1998 (King 1998). It consisted of a low mound (4m N–S; 8.2m E–W; H 0.26m) of heat-shattered stones (sandstone and limestone) in a matrix of black soil and charcoal fragments. The mound had been levelled in the past, and its N extent was disturbed by modern agricultural drainage works. A trough (L 2.75m NW–SE; Wth 0.6-0.76m; max D 0.4m) was found beneath the mound. It had vertical sides and a flat base; the N edge was damaged. There were two possible postholes, one (diam. 0.3m) cut through the SW edge of the trough, and the other (diam. 0.43m) was at a distance of 0.1m from the SE edge of the trough. A roughly oval pit (L 0.9m; Wth 0.7m; D 0.46m), of unknown function, was located c. 2.5m S of the trough, just S of the edge of the mound. Another fulacht fia (MA030-102----), located 20m to NW, was also excavated. (King 1998).
