In undulating pasture, located on a rise with very good views, including Lough Conn to E. Named ‘Rathnacourtia’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch map, this rath consists of a raised oval area (19m E-W; 25m N–S) defined on the N half by an earthen bank (Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.85m), and elsewhere by a dilapidated inward-facing scarp. Stones protruding from the inner face of the bank may be remnants of facing or a kerb. The level NW half of the interior is at a higher level than the SE half; this appears to be the result of past quarrying away of soil from the S half of the interior. The scarp defining the S half appears therefore not to be a primary enclosing element but rather to result from later disturbance, and it is possible that the original plan of the rath was more circular than its present oval shape. There is an enclosure (MA038-060----) c. 175m to S. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 29 July 2019 - MA038-060: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA038-060----. In undulating pasture, located on a low N–S ridge, with a gradual fall of ground to the E. Good views generally, with Lough Conn visible to E. This rath is depicted as circular in plan, and is named ‘Rathmacormick’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It is evident now as a slightly raised, roughly semi-circular area (c. 14.5m N–S; c. 12m E–W) defined SSE–N by a low, sod-covered stone bank/wall (Wth 2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.7m). Stones protruding in parts may be the remnants of stone facing or a kerb. Low remnants of a wall, on a roughly E–W axis, bisects the N half of the interior, which is largely obscured by blackthorn scrub. The E half of the rath has been greatly damaged/levelled in the past, and a concrete shed overlie the SE edge. An E–W wall lies immediately to S of the enclosure, separating it from a modern house and garden. A lay-by on a N–S road encroaches to within a few meters of the rath at W. There is another rath (MA038-059----) 175m to N. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 29 July 2019 - MA038-217: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA038-217----. In pasture, located in lowlying ground surrounded by gently undulating terrain and low drumlin hills. Ground rises gently immediately to S, and there is a small drumlin c. 60m to NE. The S and W sides of the field are bordered by farm roads, and there is an active gravel quarry on an adjacent property to SW. Slightly raised circular area or platform (24m E−W; 25.5m N−S) defined by a slight scarp (H 0.5m; Wth slope 4-5m). The platform is very low profile. The top/interior is flat, grassy and featureless. The enclosing scarp appears to have been partly levelled in the past and is poorly defined, with a broadly slumped slope that grades almost seamlessly in the surrounding field surface. The top of the scarp is distinguished by a slightly longer growth of grass. On the W arc the scarp slopes down into a roughly circular rush-grown hollow (diam. 10-11m; D 0.5m) which seems to be a natural feature –a number of similar hollows occur elsewhere in the field. The impression of a slight depression outside the scarp on the N and S arcs may indicate an enclosing fosse. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
