In pasture, on a slight rise in lowlying rolling limestone grassland, with good views in all directions. Subcircular raised area (int. 42m E−W; 44m N−S) defined by a broad, low partly sod-covered stone bank/wall (overall Wth 6-7m; Wth top c. 2.5-3m). In situ facing stones protrude at random around the circuit, and a broad stony external slump (ext. H 0.9m; Wth slope c. 3-4m) emphasizes the platform. Heaps of small, loose stones occur around the circuit, probably field clearance stones. A single large prostrate slab lies on the external face of the enclosing wall at W. It is not sod-covered, and appears to be resting on the surface, with many small stones in a slight cavity beneath it; it does not appear to be part of a structure, such as a souterrain. A gap (Wth 2.5-3m) in the enclosing wall at ESE is likely to be an original entrance. The terminals retain remnants of stone facing, and a gently sloping ramp flanked by low stony banks, extends outwards from the gap. A ruined rectangular house (MA119-052003-) occupies much of the space in the centre of the interior, and another possible house (MA119-052004-) abuts the inner edge of the cashel wall at SE. Levelled remnants of a field system (MA119-052002-) surround the cashel. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 23 August 2023 - MA119-052002: Field system, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA119-052002-. Surrounding a cashel (MA119-052001-) in lowlying rolling limestone grassland, with good views in all directions. In 1986 the cashel and a portion of the field system were surveyed and planned to scale (SMR file). The plan shows linear field walls radiating from the cashel and enclosing rectilinear fields. A number of small subrectangular fields (max. dim. 35-55m) wrap around the cashel at E−S, and these are subdivided into smaller spaces by internal walls. One of these fields encloses a ruined rectangular house (MA119-052005-), and a similar rectangular house (MA119-052003-) and a possible house (MA119-052004-) are located within the cashel. Larger rectilinear fields extend beyond the cashel in all directions but their full extent is not clear on the plan. The walls appear to follow a roughly NW−SE axis, and their layout differs from and clearly pre-dates the present-day regular grid of large rectangular fields. These field walls were subsequently levelled during land reclamation works. When inspected in 2000, the fragmentary outline of some of the walls could still be traced as slight surface undulations or as linear cropmarks. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 23 August 2023 - MA119-052003: House - indeterminate date, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA119-052003-. Slightly W of centre in the interior of a cashel (MA119-052001-). This rectangular house is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map but not on later map editions. The ruined remains takes up much of the central space in the cashel interior. It is evident as a low rectangular platform (16.3m NNW−SSE; c. 7m ENE−WSW) defined by a wall reduced now to a sod-covered stone bank (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.1; ext. H 0.3-0.6m). The NW half is quite well defined, with a rough break in the middle of the NW wall. The NE wall has been largely obliterated. The SW wall is partly truncated at its S end by an irregular-shaped linear depression/trench (8m N−S; 1.7m at S, 4.5m at N) which cuts through the S half of the house interior on a roughly N-S axis. The depression is wider at the N end and is now filled with loose stones. The SE end wall of the house appears to merge with a low wall/bank which subdivides the S portion of the cashel interior. The date of the house is uncertain. It might be relatively late, associated with a field system (MA119-052002-) that encloses the cashel. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 23 August 2023 - MA119-052004: House - indeterminate date, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA119-052004-. In a cashel (MA119-052001-). Slight remnants of a subrectangular structure (c. 5m E−W; c. 7-8m N−S) abut the inner face of the cashel wall in the SE quadrant of the interior. Only the N wall and the E wall can still be traced. Within a field system (MA119-052002-), c. 25m S of a cashel (MA119-052001-). A scale plan of the field system drawn in the 1986 records a rectangular two-room house (c. 8-10m E-W; 4-5m N-S) on a roughly E-W axis (SMR file), located in the SW quadrant of a subrectangular field appended to the S arc of the cashel. The SW corner of the house abutted the curving SW wall of the field. A number of walls subdivided the field into smaller subrectangular spaces, one of which abutted the NE end of the house. This house and the field walls were subsequently levelled during land reclamation. When inspected in 2000, no remains of the house were visible at ground level. Located c. 15m N of a cashel (MA119-052001-) within a field system (MA119-052002-). A scale plan of the field system drawn in the 1986 records a rectangular building (8-10m N−S; 4-5m E-W) bordered on its W side by a N-S field wall (SMR file). This possible house and the adjoining field wall were levelled during land reclamation. When inspected in 2000, the house was not visible at ground level. In pasture, on a natural rise in rolling grassland, with excellent views in all direstions. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 45m) is shown on the 1838 OS-6-inch map; it is indicated on the 1915 edition as an irregular oval-shaped enclosure (48m N−S; 35m E−W). It has been levelled. A faint undulation (c. 35-40m N−S; c. 32-35m E−W) following the natural contours of the rise can be traced at ground level. An E−W field wall traverses the N edge.
