- MA071-118: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA071-118----. In pasture, located on a ridge, overlooking an expanse of damp pasture at NW−NE; the spine of the ridge rises gently to SSW, restricting views. A broadly oval enclosure is shown on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps. It has been levelled, but the outline of a roughly circular, slightly raised area (36m N–S; 33.7m E–W) can still be traced, defined by broadly sloping sides (H 0.85m at N, 0.4m at S; Wth slope 5m at N, 3.4m at S) representing a levelled bank/scarp. A slight linear slump or depression extends on a NE−SW axis across the levelled scarp at SW. There is a hint of a depression outside the scarp at SE−S and at NW, possibly indicating a fosse. In the NE corner of a modern rectangular pasture field, on a roughly N−S ridge, with very good views at W−NW over a broad sweep of lowlying pasture. There is a stream 160m to E. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and on the 1931 edition as a roughly D-shaped area, truncated on the straight side at E by a N−S road. The remains consist of a roughly D-shaped platform (37.6m N−S; 30m E−W to road) defined on the curving side by a scarp (H 1.6-1.8m), and truncated on the straight E side by a road. The scarp has been cut to the vertical and faced with stone to serve as a field fence; it is topped by a post-and-wire fence and by hawthorn trees and brambles. The S arc now forms the boundary to the garden of a modern house, and there is a small gated break in the scarp at SSW. A narrow eroded break at NNW allows cattle access to the rath interior from the adjoining field. The interior is fairly level, with a slight dip at E. It is grassy and featureless. In pasture, located on the E bank of a N-flowing stream in the base of a narrow, steep-sided valley. A N−S field drain with parallel field wall now borders the E side of the stream, intervening between the burnt mound and the stream A low, grass-covered, roughly D-shaped rise (c. 9m N–S; c. 6m E–W) of angular stones in dark soil, bordered on the straight side to W by the field drain. The mound appears to have been partly levelled; it is best defined at N−E but elsewhere its limits, particularly to S, are poorly defined.
