- MA082-006: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA082-006----. In pasture, located on a rise in undulating terrain. The surrounding ridges and undulations give the effect of being in the centre of a low natural bowl or amphitheatre. Nephin mountain is visible on the far horizon to W. Shown on the 1838 edition OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure, crossed to W of centre by a N–S field boundary/townland boundary; it is shown on the 1916 edition as a D-shaped hachured area bordered on the straight E side by the N−S townland boundary. Originally circular (diam. c. 20-25m), the W two thirds of this enclosure have been levelled. The remains consist of a D-shaped platform (16.2m N–S; 9.4m E–W to wall) defined on its curving W side by a pronounced scarp (ext. H 1.5m), largely earthen but with some stone protruding slightly from the sod in parts. Outside the scarp is a broad, well defined fosse (Wth 5m) on the outer edge of which is a gravelly external bank (Wth 6-7.4m; int. H 0.7-1.2m; ext. H 1.5-1.8m) with a broad slump enhanced by the natural slope of the rise. The platform is substantially raised, with a slight slope down to the S in the S half. The straight side to E is bordered by a N–S field wall which serves both as a townland and a property boundary. To E of this N−S wall, a low rise/undulation preserves the outline of the levelled NE quadrant of the enclosure. There is no trace SE quadrant at ground level. A perpendicular field wall extends to E from the N–S townland boundary, crossing the levelled E portion of the enclosure. There is a cashel (MA082-007----) 175m to NE, and a ringbarrow (MA081-014) visible on the skyline 350m to SW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 17 December 2021

In pasture, located on a terrace on a NNE-facing slope, giving good views to N–E over a broad sweep of countryside. Raised circular area (33m E–W; 30.5m N–S) defined by a bank, outside which it is enclosed by a fosse and external bank. The inner bank (Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.9m, at W) is constructed of gravelly earth and stone. In parts, especially at SW, stones protruding from the top appear to be remnants of kerbing or possibly wall footings (Wth c. 0.8m). At NNW–NNE it has been partly levelled and overlain by a later E–W field wall that preserves the curve of the enclosure. The fosse (Wth 3.7m, at W) is flat-based and at SW–W is covered with a surface spread of stones; it cannot be traced at NNE–E. The external bank (Wth 3.4m; int. H 1m; ext. H 0.65m, at W) survives as a low rise at E–S and is well defined at SW–NNW, but it is levelled elsewhere. The entrance is at E where there is a gap (Wth 2m) in the inner bank. The interior appears slightly higher at W and SW but is generally level. The interior is grassy; hawthorn, hazel and a few blackthorn trees ring both banks. In pasture, constructed on a SE-facing slope on the NW side of a natural hollow surrounded by rising ground at W–N–SE, but with open views to SW where another cashel (MA082-011----) is visible c. 350m in the distance. Circular area (65.6m E–W; 68m N–S) defined by a collapsed stone wall, outside which at NNE–S is a second wall with an intervening gap or fosse. The inner enclosing wall (Wth 3.5m-7.7m) survives as a broad, sod-covered stony spread, varying in width. On the upslope W half, the collapsed wall (Wth c. 5m; int. H 1.25m) is almost flush with exterior ground level but has a pronounced internal slump, mirroring the natural slope. On the E half, the stony spread (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.5-0.8m) expands to a width of over 7m. The fosse and external wall can be traced clearly only on the E half although a slight undulation at SW–NW may preserve the outer edge of the fosse. The fosse (Wth c. 2m at E) is flat-based and appears relatively narrow, probably due to slumping of the collapsed inner wall. The outer wall survives as a sod-covered stony rise (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.3m at E). At NNE there is a low area (Wth 3m) in the inner wall with a causeway-like stony rise (Wth c. 2m) across the fosse, but this may be the result of a late modification rather than an original entrance. There is another break (Wth 1.4m) in the inner wall at E. Ground level in the interior mirrors the natural contours: there is a marked slope down to E in the W third, which levels out and then rises slightly in the centre, falling again to E–SE in the E third. A sub-circular stone platform (11m E–W; 9m N–S) which straddles the slightly raised central area may be the remains of a a house (MA082-008001-). A ruined later field wall on a N–S axis crosses the E half of the rath interior, crossing the possible house roughly centrally. Remnants of another field wall, on an E–W axis, overlie the SW edge of the cashel. The cashel interior is dotted with small, sod-covered heaps of field clearance stones; it is grass covered with ferns and occasional blackthorn scrub and hawthorn trees. Straddling a slightly raised area in the E half of a cashel (MA082-008----). A low, sub-circular stony platform (11m E–W; 9m N–S) which is built up to compensate for the natural E-facing slope within the cashel interior. It is defined on the W half by a slightly raised stony rim (Wth 1.3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.15m) and on the E half by a broadly slumping stony scarp (Wth slope 4m; ext. H 1.5m). It is crossed roughly centrally by a ruined field wall which traverses the cashel interior. The platform is covered in sod and moss and the surface feels stony underfoot. In pasture, located on a ridge, with a steep slope on the N side. The location provides extensive views, but is overlooked to E by the ridge summit. Nephin Mountain is visible to NW on the far horizon. A subcircular area (23m N–S; c. 24m E–W) defined by a remnants of a stone wall. The wall survives at SE–NW as a low, sod-covered stony rise (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.55m), with occasional glimpses at NW of a possible stone kerb on the inner face. At NNW–NNE it is incorporated into a later E–W field wall which partly respects the curve of the enclosure. At E a straight N–S field wall overlies or truncates the E edge of the enclosure. A curving line of stones protrudes from the ground 1.5–2m outside the enclosing wall at SE–SW. It respects the curve of the enclosure but at SW begins to peters out and then curves in to merge with the enclosure wall; it cannot be traced elsewhere around the circuit. At the point where it merges with the enclosure wall, it is overlain by a heap of field clearance stones that abuts the enclosure at SW extending S from it for 4m. The central part (diam. c. 11m) of the interior is slightly raised or gently domed in profile, and defined SE–SW by a slight stony scarp. A roughly square pit (4m NE–SW; 3m NW–SE) has been dug into the SW side of this raised area. There is a cashel (MA082-008----) c. 150m to W. In pasture, located on the SW-facing slope on a ridge. Shown on the 1916 OS 6-inch map as a field boundary describing a shallow arc SW–NE, intersecting at E with a N–S linear field boundary, and at SW end with a straight field boundary that extends to W. The arc of wall is extant. It consists of a ruined drystone wall reduced to wall footings (Wth 0.9m; H 0.2m) with heaps of loose field stones on top. At NE end it ends at the extant N-S field wall. Ground slopes down towards another short isolated arc of sod-covered wall footings located c. 40m to SE. The walls appear to respect natural contours. They may have enclosed a roughly D-shaped area (c. 70m NE–SW; c. 50m NW–SE), curving SE–NE, bordered now on the straight E side by the extant N–S field wall –but this is very uncertain. In pasture, located on a gentle N-facing ridge slope with good views, including Nephin Mountain visible on the skyline to NW. Remnants of a wedge tomb consisting of a low, sod-covered sub-rectangular mound (c. 8m NE–SW; c. 5m NW–SE; H 0.5-0.8m), from which several large upright stones/ortostats (Wth c. 0.6m; H c. 0.6m; T c. 0.3m) protrude. A double row of orthostats borders the NW side of the mound, and a perpendicular upright slab forms a facing on the NE side: these appear to represent the NE end of a gallery on a NE−SW axis. The mound is crossed by an E–W field fence. There are raths (MA082-006----; MA082-007----) 250m to WNW and c. 170m to NNW, respectively.
