In pasture, located on top of a NE–SW ridge. Slightly raised, roughly circular area (c. 44m NNW–SSE; c. 43m WSW–ESE) defined by a stony scarp (H 0.8m at SW). The scarp is incorporated at NE–SE into a later field fence/property boundary; at SSE–WSW stones, possibly wall footings, protrude along upper edge of the scarp; at W–NNE the scarp is difficult to trace and is degraded to a low stony rise (Wth 2-2.5m). In the NW quadrant of the interior there is a linear depression (L c. 8m NW−SE; Wth 1.2m base, 2m top; D 0.5m). The rath is bisected N of centre by a field fence on a roughly E–W axis, and a post and wire property boundary extends to NW from this. To S of the E–W field fence, the interior is grass covered; to N of the fence, the interior is engulfed in hawthorn, blackthorn and hazel trees, which also ring the perimeter. There is a rath (MA062-081001-) 280m to SE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 November 2020 - MA062-081001: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA062-081001-. In pasture, located on top of a ridge, straddling the SW-facing slope, with excellent views, especially to SE–W over lowlying tracts of average and wettish pasture. The N5 road cuts through the ridge slope 20m to NW of the rath. Raised circular area (33m E–W; 30.4m N–S) defined by an earthen scarp. At NE there is a slightly raised stony rim (Wth 1m) on the top edge of the scarp. At NNE–E the external face of the scarp (H 1.7m) is cut to the vertical and remnants of stone facing are evident; this appears to be the result of relatively recent incorporation of the rath into a system of field boundaries. These field boundaries, shown on the 1919 OS 6-inch map (1919), were removed in recent years. The enclosing scarp is lowest (H c. 0.75m) at E–SE, and a low, eroded section (Wth 2.4m) of scarp here may mark an original entrance. At SSE–SW the scarp (H 2.4m) has a pronounced external slope enhanced by the natural fall of ground. There are eroded gaps or breaks at SE (Wth 0.6m) and at NW (Wth 3m). The centre of the interior appears slightly raised with a gentle slope down from there to NE–E. On the highest point in the centre there is a low cairn of stones supporting a flat slab that marks an OS trigonometrical station. A souterrain (MA062-081002-), marked as ‘Cave’, is indicated in the centre of the rath on the 1837 and 1919 OS 6-inch maps. The rath is grass-covered, with gorse and hawthorn on the perimeter. Several animal burrows cut through the scarp and the interior. Two raths (MA062-082----; MA072-002----) are located 100m to ESE, and 260m to SE, respectively, and another rath (MA062-080----) is c. 270m to NW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 November 2020 - MA062-081002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA062-081002-. In a rath (MA062-081001-). A souterrain is indicated on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a small circular feature, marked ‘Cave’, in the centre of the rath. It is indicated as ‘Cave (Site of)’ on the 1919 edition. Ground level in the centre of the rath interior appears higher than elsewhere in the interior, but there is no visible trace of a souterrain. In pasture, located on top of a ridge, utilising the steep natural slope to SW–W. Slightly raised broadly oval area (28.4m E–W; 22.6m E–W) defined by a low earthen scarp. The N and SE arcs of the rath have been partly levelled. At SW–W the enclosing scarp (H 1.6m) remains well defined where it is cut into and enhanced by the steep natural slope. At WNW–NE it has been levelled and is visible only as a low curving rise or undulation. A short section (H 1.4m) at E–ESE is also well defined, shielded by a N–S field wall that traverses the E edge of the rath. At SE–SSW the scarp is levelled but a few stones protrude from the sod along its original circuit. The interior is level, except for a slight slump in the NE quadrant. No entrance feature is evident but, given the natural terrain, it is most likely to have been on the E–S side. Three field walls subdivide the rath interior: An E-W field wall bisects the interior to N of centre, a perpendicular wall extends to N from this through the NW quadrant, and another field wall extend S from the E-W wall through the SE quadrant. There is a rath (MA062-081001-) visible on top of a knoll 100m to WNW and another rath (MA072-002----) 100m to SE. In pasture, located on the gentle N-facing slope of a rise. This record was listed in the 1991 SMR and the 1996 RMP as ‘mound’ based on an aerial photograph (OS 2 4405 -6; Roll 216, pr. 17; SMR file). It consists of a cairn (7.6m E–W; c. 7m N–S; H 0.5m at E; 1m at W) of loose stones. The stones are mostly small in size but larger stones and boulders are also evident, especially around the perimeter. The cairn slumps down gently from S to N, reflecting the natural slope. This may to be a field clearance cairn of relatively recent date. There is a rath (MA062-086----) 35m to SW. In pasture, located on top of a ridge, with good views of the surrounding undulating grassland. Slightly raised circular area (33.8m E–W; 34.7m N–S) defined by a stony scarp (ext. H 1m). The scarp is very dilapidated, with short lengths at NE and S disturbed or partly levelled, and a section at NW–N quarried away. It is topped with a low, irregular spread of sod-covered stone, possibly a robbed-out wall. At SSE–SW it forms a more clearly defined stone bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.55m); a gap of 1.7m separates this from an inner stony rise (Wth 1.8m; H 0.3m) which is irregular, poorly defined, and does not occur elsewhere around the circuit. The interior is slightly higher in the centre and N, giving enclosure a somewhat domed appearance in profile. A slightly raised mossy line, extending on a NW–SE axis through the centre, may be the remnant of a field boundary or internal division. In the N half of the interior a series of interconnected irregular hollows may indicate a collapsed souterrain (MA062-086001). Rough grass in the rath interior; heather and a few hawthorn trees on the enclosing scarp. There is cairn located 35m to NE, and a rath (MA072-004001-) 200m to SE. In a ringfort/cashel (MA062-086----). In the N half of the ringfort interior, there are a number of shallow interconnected hollows or surface depressions, covering an area of c. 10−11m N–S by c. 5m E–W, partly obscured by overgrowth and difficult to examine. The largest hollow (L c. 10m N−S; Wth 2.6m; D 0.5m) is linear, extending S into the interior from close to the scarp at N. There are smaller subcircular hollows to S and E. Stones appear to protrude from the borders of some hollows. They may simply be the result of disturbance/quarrying or they might indicate the presence of a souterrain. In pasture, located on top of a ridge with a steep fall of ground on the S side. Views are best to S. Slightly raised oval area (23m N−S; 27m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.4m at E, 2m at S, 1.6 at SW), which is enhanced at SE−SW by the steep natural slope. At W the scarp is incorporated into a straight NNE−SSW field fence and the remnants of a straight E−W field fence merges with the scarp at N. The rath interior has an uneven surface. There is a slight dip in the N part of the interior, and a gently slope down towards the perimeter in the SE quadrant and also in the SW quadrant. Hawthorn, gorse and brambles ring the perimeter and encroach the SW quadrant of the interior. Outside the rath, at the base of the scarp at SE, there is a slightly sunken circular feature (diam. c. 2m), defined around its sunken edge by drystone walling. This may be a ruined limekiln. In rough pasture, located on a low ridge. This enclosure is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; but is shown on later map editions . A very slightly raised oval area (29.5m NE−SW; c. 25m NW−SE) is defined at NE−SE by a very low curving stony bank , which peters out at SSE−S. A low stony bank is also evident at SW. At SW−NNE there is an upstanding drystone field wall which appears to respect the curve of the enclosure. The N half of the interior appears to be at a slightly higher level than the S half. An old farm laneway, flanked by field walls, skirts the E side of the enclosure, extending beyond it to NE and SW. The N portion of the interior is planted with conifers. In pasture, located on a rise, with fall of ground to W and a more gently fall to N. Circular area (29m N-S; 32.4m E–W) defined by a remnants of a drystone wall, which has collapsed to a low, sod-covered stone bank. At S–SW the wall (Wth 1.8m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.3m) retains remnants of the original internal and external stone facing of large stones. At SW–NE, where the natural fall of ground is steepest, the stone bank has a broad slump (Wth 4.7m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.85m), and appears to incorporate field clearance stones. There is a low section (Wth c. 4m) in the stone bank at E but no clearly defined entrance gap. Remnants of a field wall (Wth 0.6m; H 0.2m) on a NE–SW extends across the N half of the interior. A souterrain (MA072-004002-) is located in the S half of the interior. There is a small stand of conifers in the NW quadrant of the cashel, and a clump of blackthorn bushes encroaches on the stone bank at NW. A small area of quarrying (diam. c. 3m) cuts into the external face of the stone bank at N. In a cashel (MA072-004001-). This souterrain is indicated as ‘Cave’ on the 1838 and 1930 OS 6-inch maps, where it is shown on the SW perimeter of the cashel. According to local information, there was an opening into the souterrain roughly in the centre of the interior, just S of the bisecting field wall; it was possible to crawl along a stone-lined passage which opened into a larger space/chamber. This opening was blocked up and is not now visible. A badger set now marks the location. In pasture, located on a rise. Raised subcircular area (diam. 25-30m) defined by an earth and stone bank, and enclosed by a fosse with an external earth and stone bank. The stony inner bank (Wth 3-3.4m at SE; 3.5-4m at NW; int. H 0.65m at SE, 0.3m at NW; ext. H 1.6-1.7m) is best preserved on the S arc. It is low and slumped on the inner face. Stones protrude in parts on the inner and outer face, possibly remnants of original stone facing. The fosse (Wth 3m at S, 3.7m at NW) is most clearly defined on the W half, where it is broad and flat-based. The stony external bank (Wth 3-3.4m at SE; 3.7m at NW; int. H 1.3-1.4m; ext. H 0.8-1.2m at SE, 0.7m at NW) also retains remnants of possible stone facing. It is reduced to a low overgrowth-covered rise on the E arc. A irregular-shaped depression (Wth 2-4m; D 0.4m), which varies in width and depth, cuts through the inner bank at SW. It extends into the rath interior for 7m to NNE and then swings to ESE for 6m. It is of uncertain significance –there are no obvious stone features that would suggest it is a souterrain. Two field walls cross the ringfort roughly centrally: one on a roughly N−S axis; the other on a NW−SE axis. Another field wall, on a NNW−SSE axis, cuts across the fosse on the E arc, and a farm track, which lies parallel on the W side of the wall, cuts through and levels the inner bank and part of the E edge of the interior. The rath is engulfed in a dense stand of hazel, blackthorn and hawthorn. In rough, heather-grown pasture, located close to the S boundary of the townland, straddling the SSE end of a narrow, prominent rise or small ridge on a roughly E−W axis. The location provides very good view, along the course of a stream, which is 90m to SW, and SW−N over a broad expanse of lowlying damp land. Raised subcircular area or platform (25m N−S; 27-29m E−W) defined by a remnants of a bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.2-0.5m; ext. H 1.5m at W) with a low internal lip on the W arc, which is reduced elsewhere around the circuit to a scarp (H c. 1.2m). Stones protrude from the top edge of the scarp at S, possibly the remains of a stone kerb. The scarp is poorly defined at N−E where has been partly dug away, and at E where it is crossed by a later field wall on a N−S axis. A fosse (Wth c. 2m; D 0.6-0.7m) is evident outside the scarp S−W, but cannot be traced elsewhere. A slight rise (Wth c. 2m) on the outer edge of the fosse at S may be the remains of a counterscarp or external bank. The rath platform has a distinctly domed N−S profile, reflecting the natural contours of the ridge: the centre of the interior forms a narrow level central spine, with steeply sloping sides falling to N and S; the drop in height is steepest on the S half, being c. 2m. There is no clearly defined entrance, but it may have been on the E side where the natural slope is more gradual. A layer (L c. 2m; D c.0.8m) of angular shattered stone in charcoal-rich soil is exposed in the eroded N bank of the stream gully (D 1.4m). Three large stones are visible at the E end of the layer. It is not possible to determine the original full extent of the mound. The stream has been dredged in recent years and upcast material lines the river bank.
