In pasture, straddling a low rise in undulating terrain. Ground falls away gradually towards a stream 125m to SW. There are good views, particularly extensive to W and SW. Slightly raised circular area (25.5m N−S; 25.5m E−W) defined by a low stony scarp (Wth 2.5m at NNE, 1.8m at S; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 1.2m at NNE, 0.45m at S). The scarp has a very low stony internal rim –it may originally have been a wall or stone bank. There is a narrow break (Wth 1.4m) in the scarp at SE, and low, eroded sections at NE (Wth 3m) and E (Wth 1m). The interior slopes down very gently to E. Roughly in the centre of the interior, there is a low irregular concentration of stones, of uncertain significance. The N part of this takes the form of a low, subrectangular spread (2.5m NE−SW; 3, NW−SE) of stones with a slightly raised perimeter rim. Abutting the SW side of this, and extending to SE from it, there are a number of irregular grass-covered stony rises. It is possible that these represent a ruined structure, but this is very uncertain; they may simply be dumps of field clearance stones. In pasture, located on a rise in undulating terrain, overlooking a stream which is 90m to W. This enclosure is not shown on 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is shown on the 1922 edition as a subcircular area (diam. c. 16m) defined by an arc of hachuring at NW and by field boundaries elsewhere. The enclosure is engulfed in a thicket of blackthorn and gorse, which impeded inspection. It is difficult to determine its original form; it may have been a circular or subcircular enclosure, which has been greatly modified and incorporated into a later system of field walls. The remains now appear to consist of a squarish area (max. dim. c. 15m) defined on the W side by a stone-faced scarp (H 0.6m) which has a stony top (wth c. 1m). This scarp curves gently W-NW but then extends in a straighter line from N−E, intersecting at E with a N−S field wall, which defines straight E side of the enclosure. The straight S side consists of an E-W field wall which appears to be built on top of a sod-covered scarp (H 0.5). In undulating pasture, located on a rise, which provides good views in all directions and overlooks a bend in a stream, located c. 80m to NE. Roughly circular raised area (diam. 18.5m N−S; 15m E−W) defined by an earthen scarp (ext. H 1.5m; Wth slope 3-4m). A gap (Wth 4.5m) in the scarp at NE opens into a sunken rectangular area (15m NE−SW; 7.5m NW−SE) in the interior; this appears to be the result of relatively modern disturbance/quarrying. The diameter of this enclosure is rather small, and the interior area has been greatly disturbed, however, it appears to be the remains of a rath. Another possible rath (MA040-012----) of similar size is located 40m to S. In pasture, located on a rise, with a more pronounced fall of ground on the W side. There are good views over the surrounding undulating terrain, although somewhat restricted by rising ground to NE and SW. There is a stream 50-60m to E. This possible rath is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, but is shown on the 1922 edition. It consists of a roughly circular, slightly raised area (diam. 14.5m N−S; 15.5m E−W) defined by a partly levelled earthen scarp (ext. H 0.6m at S), which retains a slightly raised internal rim in parts. A poorly defined gap or low section in the scarp at SE may be the site of the original entrance. It is likely that this is a rath, although the diameter is at the lower end of the size range. There is another possible rath (MA040-011----), also of small size, 40m to N. In pasture, located on a low rise in undulating terrain. Slightly raised, subcircular or broadly oval area (20.5m N−S; c. 23m E-W) defined at SW–N–SE by a stony bank/scarp, and enclosed by a fosse with an external earth and stone bank. The rath is thickly covered in blackthorn and hawthorn scrub, which makes inspection difficult. The inner bank is reduced to a scarp (H 1.6m at NE, 1.5m at SW), retaining a slight stony internal lip in parts. The slope of the scarp is quite vertical in appearance, particular on the W half, suggesting that it may have been modified in the relatively recent past. It drops into a broad, flat-based fosse (4m NE-E; 3.8m SW). On the outer edge of the fosse on the E arc, the external bank (Wth c. 2.5m) takes the form of a scarp with a low internal stony rim (Wth 1m) and a pronounced external slope (ext. H 1.1m). This gives the fosse on this side the appearance of a being a flat terrace rather than a depression. At SW-NW the external bank is most substantial (Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.5-1m; ext. H 1.1m) and appears to have served as a field boundary. The N arc of the rath is engulfed in dense overgrowth, and could not be inspected. On the S arc the two banks and intervening fosse have been truncated, levelled to a slightly raised area of stony, disturbed ground, bordered at S by an E−W line of conifers. Immediately to S of this is the garden of a modern house. There is a souterrain (MA040-013002-) in the SW quadrant and a possible house (MA040-013003-) in the S half of the interior. In the SW quadrant of a rath (MA040-013001). An opening to the souterrain, indicated on the 1922 OS 6-inch map as ‘Cave’, is located in the internal face of the inner enclosing bank of the rath at SW. It is evident as a subrectangular depression (3m N−S; 1m E−W; D c. 0.8m), with an in situ lintel slab visible on its E side, covering a passage which appears to extend to the E. It is engulfed in brambles. According to local information, the souterrain passage is of drystone construction with lintel roofing. It extending for some meters to E or NE, and is broader near the entrance; there is a small opening at the E end of the passage, beyond which there appeared to be a void or drop. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.3m). There are slight returns of the E wall at the E end of the N wall, and of the S wall at the S end of the W wall, but otherwise the outline of the E and S walls is very unclear. A low line of stones, barely discernible, extends E−W through the long axis of the interior, dividing it centrally, into two narrow spaces. In an area of undulating pasture, prominently sited on a limestone knoll, which provides excellent views in all directions, with the long spine of the Ox Mountains defining the skyline at E−S, and the summit of Nephin Mountain rising in the distance to WSW. A small lake, named Lough Lauravally on the OS 6-inch maps, now largely dried up, is located 100m to NW. The knoll was sporadically quarried for limestone in the past, and there is a ruined, circular stone-built limekiln (diam. 2m) 5m to SW of the standing stone. This standing stone is a National Monument (No. 293) in state ownership. It is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, but is marked as ‘Standing Stone’ on the 1922 edition. It was traditionally known as 'Legaun’ or ‘Legawn' (OPW topographical files). It is an upright, relatively narrow, roughly rectangular-shaped granite slab (H 3.1m; max Wth 0.68m, 0.65m at base; T 0.28m), with its long axis aligned NE−SW. It has a rectangular cross-section, a fairly uniform thickness, but expands slightly in width midway up its height. At c. 0.5m below the top, there is an abrupt, almost right-angled, narrowing of the stone to a width of 0.3m, producing a distinct ‘shoulder’ on the SW side. The combined effect of the ‘shoulder’ and the impressive height gives the stone a resemblance to an imposing human figure, when viewed from certain angles. The stone now leans to the NW, and disturbance in the past to the ground immediately surrounding the stone has left it standing on a low stony pedestal. The surface of the stone is covered by a coating of lichens. In pasture, located on a rise in an area of mixed rough and average grassland. This rath is named ‘Rathoe’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure, and on the 1922 edition as an oval enclosure (c. 30m N−S; c. 25m E−W), truncated by or incorporated into field boundaries on the NW arc, and bisected roughly centrally on a NNW−SSE axis by a field boundary. This rath has been partly levelled and the remainder is engulfed in overgrowth, making inspection difficult, however, the outline of a roughly oval area (25-30m NNE−SSW) can still be discerned, with a NNW−SSE field boundary extending through its centre. The E half of the enclosure (i.e. to NE of the bisecting field fence) has been levelled, and its outline is discernible only as a slightly raised area defined on the perimeter by a broad low slope. The W half of the enclosure is obscured by a dense thicket of blackthorn, hawthorn and brambles. A small section of the perimeter at SE-SW can be examined –here an arc of stone bank (Wth 3.3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.6m), perhaps a collapsed wall, can be seen. This stone bank does not appear to be present on the NW arc, where there is now a field fence on a NNE−SSW axis. A small circular hachured feature is indicated on the 1922 OS 6-inch map in the SW quadrant of the rath. At roughly this location in the interior, there is a roughly circular heap of stones (diam. c. 4m N−S; c. 5m E−W; H 0.4-0.5m), now covered in overgrowth. It is not possible to be certain what this is; it resembles a field clearance cairn rather than a built structure. There is an enclosure (MA040-016----) c. 50m to SW. In pasture, in gently undulating terrain. This enclosure is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is indicated on the 1922 edition as a polygonal enclosure (diam. 25m E−W; c. 30m N−S), incorporated into a system of field boundaries. It is evident now as a roughly circular area engulfed in an impenetrable thicket of blackthorn, hawthorn and brambles. Field boundaries radiate from it at NW, N, NE, E and S. At SE it is possible to trace an arc of low bank or scarp, with a field wall at the outer edge of the scarp slope, mirroring the curve of the scarp –this wall appears to curve around the NE arc too. This suggests the possibility that this is the remnants of an enclosure or rath, encircled by a ring of later field walls. Within the interior, 3m to N of the arc of scarp, there is a linear length of stone bank or wall (Wth 1m; H 0.3-0.6m) of uncertain significance, engulfed in grass and brambles. There is a rath (MA040-015----) c. 50m to NE. At N−E the stone bank has been greatly reduced and incorporated into a field fence which respects the curve of the enclosure, and at E−SE it is evident as a low grass-grown rise. The Ox Mountains dominate the skyline at E-SE, and Nephin Mountain is visible on the far horizon to WSW. This wedge tomb is a National Monument (no. 293) in state ownership. It is named ‘Dermot and Grania’s Bed’ on the 1838 and 19 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a well preserved, roughly U-shaped cairn (L 6m E−W; Wth 6.5 at W; max. H 1.5m at W), oriented NE-SW, which covers a gallery or burial chamber. As is typical for wedge tombs, the cairn tapers in width and decreasing in height from the broad, flat façade towards the rear. The entrance is in the centre of the façade at SW, and is flanked by two well matched jamb stones. It opens into the short gallery (L c. 3.5m; max. Wth 1.4m; max. H 1.1m) which is faced on each side by four large upright stones or othostats. The side stones support a roof composed of two massive, overlapping capstones. An outer wall of upright stones is now largely concealed by the cairn, but some of these orthostats can be seen protruding from the cairn towards the rear of the tomb. In pasture, located on a rise in undulating terrain, with a steep fall of ground to SW towards an area of wettish ground. Roughly circular area (c. 22m E–W; 19.6m N–S) defined by a stony bank/wall (H c. 1.2m, at W). The stone bank is ruined, and has been adapted to serve as a field boundary on the N arc. It varies in width from c. 2m to 3m depending on the degree of slumping or addition of field clearance stone. At NNE–SE it appears as a low, sod-covered stony rise, at S–NW as a bank of earth and stone, with a roughly constructed external facing of rounded field stones, and at NW–N it is incorporated into the E-W line of an extant field wall, but retains its original curve. Field clearance stones are piled against the bank, with the largest heaps at S and W. Field boundaries, shown abutting the enclosure at SE and SW have been removed. The interior is fairly level. The middle stone and the NNE stone (H 1m; Wth 0.1m at top, 0.6m at base; T 0.25m) and are of similar height, and set 1.4m apart. There is a standing stone (MA040-091----) 120m to NE and a possible standing stone (MA040-111----) 80m to N, both on the flat lowlying ground bordering the river. In pasture, located on the level top of a low ridge in an area of undulating, hilly terrain. A stream skirts the base of the ridge at NE and N. The long spine of the Ox Mountains extends E−SE on the near horizon, and the summit of Nephin Mountain is visible in the far distance to SW. This monument is a National Monument (no. 293) in state ownership. It is not indicated on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. In the early 20th-century it was recorded as a mound (3.65m x 3.65m; H 0.9) with a chamber (2m x 1m; H 1m), known traditionally as the ‘Fairy hole’ (OPW Topographical Files). A massive slab (L c. 3m NE−SW; Wth 1.9m; T 0.1-0.35m) lies prostrate on the ground. It is subrectangular or roughly oblong in shape, narrowing in width towards either end at NE and SW. The flat upper surface of the slab is pitted with several small, circular solution hollows (diam. 0.5-0.15m; D 0.02-0.03m), with the greatest concentration along the E−SE side of the stone. The slab covers a subterranean pit or cavity (D 0.2m at NE end; 0.3-0.4m at SW end) which appears to mirror the length and width of the slab. According to local information, in the early-mid 20th-century it was possible for a person to crawl beneath the capstone into the cavity, but the cavity is now largely infilled with small stones and is inaccessible. The SW end of the slab is partly concealed beneath an irregular-shaped, sod-covered mound (5m N−S; 2.5m E−W; H 0.7m) of earth and stones. A lower, shapeless sod-covered heap (max. dim. c. 3m; H 0.4-0.45m) lies adjacent to the NE end of the slab. According to local tradition, rainwater taken from the largest of the solution hollows on the surface of the slab can be used to cure warts. There is a wedge tomb (MA040-019----) 370m to NE, another (MA040-017----) is located 600m to N, and a standing stone (MA040-014----) is visible on a hill top c. 730m to W. At a cairn (MA040-093001-). This record is listed in the RMP (1997) as 'standing stone -possible'. The source of this information is uncertain. It appears to derive from the possibility that the large prostrate slab at this location may once have stood upright.
