In pasture, located on the top of a rise, which provides good views over the surrounding undulating terrain of mixed pasture and bog. Slightly raised circular area (25.6m N–S; 25m E-W) defined by a bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.2m) of earth and stone. The bank is best preserved at N where it has been protected from erosion by an ENE–WSW field/property boundary, which abuts the external face of the bank. Elsewhere the bank is rather low and degraded. Remnants of a rough stone kerb are evident on the inner face of the bank at W. The interior is level, with traces of cultivation ridges on a NW–SE axis. There is an opening into a souterrain (MA038-022002-) in the SW quadrant, and a slight surface depression to W of centre may also be indicative of the souterrain. The boundary fences of residential properties lie immediately to E and S of the rath. There is another rath (MA038-024----) 130m to SSE. In a rath (MA038-022001-). This drystone-built souterrain consists of at least three subrectangular chambers, each with its long axis on a different orientation, all interconnected by short creepways. The current access is through a surface opening/area of collapse (c. 2m NW–SE; c. 2m NE–SW) located close to the bank at SSW in the rath interior. It gives onto a short, narrow creepway (Wth 0.56m; H 0.56m) which opens into the SE end of a stone-built chamber (5.3m NW–SE; 1.9m NE–SW; H 1.3m). This chamber (chamber 1), long axis NW-SE, is rectangular in plan, with slightly rounded corners. The walls are constructed of large stones and boulders, roughly coursed; the uppermost two courses are slightly corbelled and support a roof of massive lintel slabs. The floor is covered with compacted earth and loose stone rubble, and slopes down toward the NW end of the chamber. At the NW end, a low, narrow earthen platform (1.2m NW–SE), edged with stones, spans the full width of the NW wall, fronting a narrow lintelled opening (H 1.6m) to a creep located in the middle of the wall. The creep consists of a short passage which curves to the N, opening into the SE corner of another chamber (chamber 2) (5.05m N–S; 2m E–W; H c. 1.2m). Chamber 2 is orientation N-S, rectangular in plan with rounded corners and is of similar construction to the chamber I. The S end of the chamber is strewn with heaps of earth and loose stones, and the floor slopes up from there towards the N end. At floor level in the rounded NE corner, there is a lintelled opening (Wth 0.66m; H 0.44m) into a creep (L 1.4m), which opens into the W end of a third chamber (Wth 1.4m N–S; H 1m at W end). Chamber 3 is of similar construction to the other two, but is noticeably narrower and the ceiling is lower, with a floor that slopes upwards toward the E end. It extends to the E for 1.7m, at which point there is an impassable blockage of earthen collapse, which rises to within 0.3-0.4m of the roof lintels. It is clear, however, that the chamber continues for at least a few meters to E beyond the blockage. In pasture, located on a rise, with good views generally, in an area of gently undulating pasture and bog. The ground rises gently to NW. There is stream 70m to W, and the River Deel, which serves as the townland boundary, is less than 300m to SE. This rath is named ‘Rath beg’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a raised circular area (22m N-S; 23.3m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5.4m at N; c. 4m at S; int. H 0.85m at N, 0.2m at S; ext. H 0.8m at N, 1.7m at S). The interior is level, built up higher on the S side to compensate for a natural slope. The bank is evident as a grass-covered rise, with a particularly broad external slump on the W half. It is noticeably lower and narrower (Wth 2.8m; ext. H 0.5m at NE) at NE-SE. At S-SW it has a low internal slope and is topped with sod-covered stones, and stones are also visible on the external face at S, which appear to be the result of field clearance. Grass cover, with blackthorn and brambles on the bank on the S half of the circuit. There is a rath (MA038-022001-) 130m to NNW. In rough pasture, located on a slight S-facing slope, overlooking the Deel River which is 80m to S, and marks the townland boundary. There is a farmstead immediately to S. Extensive expanses of bog stretch to N, now largely planted with forestry. Slightly raised subcircular area (26m N–S; 24m E–W) defined by a substantial bank (Wth 3m at E, 5m at N; int. H 0.5-0.9m; ext. H 0.6-0.9m) of earth and stone. According to local information, the interior was tilled and used as a potato garden until the late 20th-century. Access is through a gap (Wth 2m) at S. The interior is grassy; the perimeter is ringed with hazel and ash trees. The nature of this enclosure is uncertain. On the 1838 and 1922 6-inch maps it is outlined by a single solid line rather than by hachuring or other conventions used to denote ringforts. On both maps it is shown incorporated into the cluster of fields that surround a farmstead. It may be a rath that was adapted to serve as a field enclosure, or it may simply be an enclosure contemporary with the vernacular farmstead. In lowlying average pasture, located on a low rise. There is a gradual fall of ground for c. 100m to S to the Deel River, which marks the townland boundary. This monument is shown on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps as a subcircular enclosure (diam. c. 20m), incorporated into a linear field boundary at NE and SW. It has been partly levelled. The western arc survives as a substantial earth and stone bank (Wth 3-4m; int. H 1m; ext. H 2m at W), which incorporating large stones, and has been adapted to serve as a field boundary. Elsewhere the enclosing bank has been entirely removed. The interior area is distinguished by a stony surface, disturbed in appearance. The enclosure is remembered locally as a ‘garden field’. In damp pasture, located on the S side of a low rise, adjacent to the Fiddaunglass stream that flows into the River Deel c. 40m to E. A sub-circular mound (diam. 9.5m; H 0.75m) of heat-shattered stone fragments in charcoal-rich soil, with a slight indentation (Wth 2m), possibly indicating the position of the trough, on NE side facing the stream. The mound has a covering of moss and sod, and shallow furrow-like grooves traverse the top surface on a N-S axis. One in a linear cluster of fulachtaí fia/burnt mounds (MA038-203--- to MA038-208----) located along the course of the stream. The mound is highest at N and W, with a shallower slope to E. A few gorse bushes grow on the mound. Compact, moss-covered, kidney-shaped mound (12.2m N-S; 9m E-W; H 0.55m) with a rush-grown indentation or depression (Wth 2m), probably indicating the position of the trough, on W side facing the stream. A layer (L c. 5m E-W; D c. 0.6m) of burnt sandstone fragments in black, charcoal-rich soil is visible in section in a NNE–SSW field drain (Wth 2m; D 0.5m), and is incorporated into a field bank (H 1.5m), which borders the N side of the drain. A low irregular-shaped, heather-covered rise (4m N-S; 3Mm E-W) of burnt stone fragments in black soil located at the edge of the stream. The nature of this mound is uncertain: its small size and disturbed appearance suggests the possibility that it is displaced material, possibly even derived from a partly destroyed fulacht fia (MA038-205---), which lies 12m to N. One in a linear cluster of fulachtaí fia/burnt mounds (MA038-203--- to MA038-208----) located along the course of the stream. In poorly drained pasture, planted with conifers, located at the base of the W slope of a low rise, close to the E bank of the Fiddaunglass stream, a tributary of the River Deel. When discovered in 1996, this burnt mound was visible as a layer (D c. 0.3m) of angular burnt stone in a charcoal-rich matrix in two intersecting forestry trenches: The layer (L 6m) is visible in section in the E face of a N–S trench (W 0.9m) and also (L c. 4m) in the N face of a perpendicular trench (W 0.5m) that branches to the E. A thin layer of peaty soil overlies the burnt material. There is no trace of the mound at ground surface. One in a linear cluster of fulachtaí fia/burnt mounds (MA038-203--- to MA038-208----) located along the course of the stream. Located in rough, poorly drained pasture, 5m E of the Fiddaunglass stream, a tributary of the River Deel. Irregular-shaped mound (8m E-W; 4m N-S; H 0.8m) cut through on its N side by a field drain bordered on its S edge by a field bank. Immediately to the N of the drain is a discrete concentration of hazel scrub, possibly concealing further remnants of the mound. One in a linear cluster of fulachtaí fia/burnt mounds (MA038-203--- to MA038-208----) located along the course of the stream. In an area of marginal, damp boggy land, much of it now under forestry, located on ground that slopes down to the Fiddaunglass, a tributary stream of the River Deel, which lies c. 50m to ENE. Three other burnt mounds are located nearby along the banks of the stream, two (MA038-205----; MA038-206----) c. 55m to NE, and a third (MA038-207----) c. 90m to NNE, all within coniferous plantation. This burnt spread was discovered in December 2011 during archaeological monitoring of an afforestation project. It was uncovered directly below the topsoil, at a depth of 0.05-0.15m below the surface, within a trench (Wth 1m) excavated as part of the mounding for the afforestation. It appeared as a layer (L 5-6m ENE/WSW) of heat-shattered, fist-sized rocks and blackened soil with occasional charcoal. The layer was not evident in parallel trenches excavated at a distance of 7.5-8m to the NNW and to the SSE. The section of trench containing the burnt mound was back-filled by hand and a 15m exclusion zone fenced off within which no planting will take place.
