In pasture, on top of a NE−SW ridge, close to the break of slope on the NW side where the ground falls steeply into a valley bordered on the opposite side by a high ridge. There are clear views of Croagh Patrick to W. To SE ground falls away more gradually, with extensive views over undulating pastureland. This well preserved rath consists of a circular raised area (47.3m NNW−SSE; 50.2m ENE−WSW) defined by a substantial earthen bank (Wth c. 5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 2.5m at NW, 1.45m at SE) with an external fosse (Wth 3-4m, base c. 2m, at NW). The inner face of the bank is quite well defined and incorporates stones at NW but is levelled to a broad low lip elsewhere around the circuit, giving the rath interior a slightly dished or saucer shaped profile. The external slope of the bank is high and pronounced, especially so on the NW arc. The fosse is evident as a broad but very shallow silted-up depression. The interior dips down slightly from centre to NE−E. It is crossed slightly N of centre by a NW−SE property fence, thickly covered in gorse. Remnants of cultivations ridges traverse the interior on a roughly E−W axis. The entrance may have been at E−ESE where the bank appears lower and there is a hint of a break in the fosse. A holy well named St. Patrick’s Well (MA080-046002-) is a 40m meters to SE. According to tradition, this rath was ‘called Lisnacrus, or the fort of the Cross’ because of its association with the holy well: ‘The country people say that stations used to be held, marked by wooden crosses, starting from the well and round the rath back to the well.’ (Knox 1902, 188-9). In pasture, located on a gentle slope c. 40m SE of a rath (MA080-046001-). Named ‘St Patrick’s Well’ on the 1838 and 1919 OS 6-inch maps, this consist of a circular sod-covered earth and stone mound (diam. 6-7.5m; H 0.6m) with a shallow central hollow (diam. 0.8-1m; D 0.25m). Unusually, the well is not located at a spring but, according to tradition, utilised water gathered in the hollow of a bullaun stone (MA080-046003-). An account of this was recorded by Knox (1902, 188-9): ‘The well consists of a hollow in a large stone which is slightly below ground level, and has the appearance of being having been built around. The hollow is oval, 17 inches by 15 inches, and 7 inches deep [0.43m by 0.39m by 0.18m]. Although there is no spring, it is said that there is always water in it…The country people say that stations used to be held, marked by wooden crosses, starting from the well and round the rath back to the well.’ When inspected in 1998, there was no trace of the bullaun stone in the central hollow of the mound. Part of a holy well (MA080-046002-) named St. Patrick’s Well on the 1838 and 1919 OS 6-inch maps. According to Knox (1902, 188-189), a bullaun stone formed an integral part of St Patrick’s Well. He noted that ‘The object of veneration is the water in an artificial hollow in a stone, not that of a natural spring.’ There was no visible trace of the bullaun stone when the well was inspected in 1998. In rough, scrubby woodland, adjacent to a spring in a natural basin of wet ground at the base of a steep NNW-facing ridge slope. The area is marked ‘Carrowdangan Wood’ on the 1919 OS 6-inch map. A roughly oval mound (c. 6m NW–SE; c. 4-5m NE–SW; H 0.3m) of firm dry ground amidst an expanse of soft, wet terrain. It is composed of heat-shattered stones and occasional charcoal fragments in dark soil. The exact limits of the mound are obscured by a large willow tree, whose roots have spread over the mound.
