In rough, rocky pasture, straddling an E-facing slope with extensive views, especially to S. At the base of slope immediately to NE−SE of the cashel there is an expanse of flat wet, rush-grown ground. A network of small rectangular and sub-rectangular fields (MA073-036----), dotted with small field clearance cairns, extends to N. Oval area (30.3m WNW-ESE; 37m NNE-SSW) enclosed by a drystone wall (Wth 2-2.4m; int. H 1-1.5m; ext. H 1.5-1.7m). The cashel straddles a break of slope so that the enclosing wall at E−SW is not freestanding, but forms a facing (H 1.7-2m) on a scarp created to compensate for the natural slope. The external wall face is largely intact, with basal courses of large stones and boulders and upper courses of horizontally laid medium-sized stones and slabs; some sections at E and SE appear to have been modified or rebuilt in relatively recent times. The inner wall face is partly collapsed and is almost entirely obscured by sod and heather. At N and NW, sod-covered stone heaps (4-7m E-W; 1.5-2m N-S; H 0.7m) abut the inner face of the wall; these may be the result of wall collapse or possibly field clearance. In the interior, a broadly sloping E-facing scarp curves NE−SE, marking a drop in height of c. 0.7m in the E-SE quadrant. A kidney-shaped cairn of field stones (6.6m N-S; 3m; H 0.8m) is located in the NW quadrant. There is no clearly defined entrance; short sections of collapsed wall at S and NW currently allow access to the interior. In an area of rough, rocky pasture, divided into a series regular, narrow NW-SE fields or ‘stripes’ by drystone field walls, which are superimposed on earlier, irregular sub-divisions. This enclosure is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. It is indicated on the 1919 edition as a roughly D-shaped enclosure (c. 35m E-W; c. 25m N-S) with straight side at N and S defined by a field boundaries. The enclosure is also recorded in an aerial photograph (SMR file: GSI M 681-0; Roll 218, pr. 8). The enclosure was removed during land reclamation in 1980's/early 1990's. When inspected in 1996, a slight rise in ground level, bordered at NE and SW by field walls, was evident with remnants of a low curving scarp (H 0.4m) immediately to S of the SW field wall, possibly preserving the extreme S edge of the enclosure. A single hawthorn bush stood at the location. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 June 2021 - MA073-036001: Field system, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-036001-. In an area of marginal land, encompassing a mix of rough, rock-strewn pasture, and wet, boggy ground. This field system is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, but is indicated on the 1919 edition. It consists of a network of rectangular and sub-rectangular fields enclosed by drystone walls. The layout of the fields is irregular, suggesting that it grew organically or sporadically rather that being the result of a single, planned event. The walls (Wth 0.5-0.7m; H 0.5-1m) are roughly built of limestone rubble, with large boulders or bedrock outcropping occasionally incorporated into the foundation courses. The fields vary in size and shape, including long, narrow rectangular fields (c. 100-130m x 20-30m), broader rectilinear shapes (c. 50m x 60-70m), small irregular fields (c. 20m x 15m) or small, subcircular pounds or enclosures (diam. c. 15m). The shape of the more irregular-shaped fields is sometimes dictated by changes in the landscape or land quality, with walls following the natural contours of the rough, undulating terrain, or providing a demarcation between boggy and dry ground. The orientation varies, with clusters of parallel rectilinear fields on a NE–SW axis abutting clusters on a NW–SE axis, and intermixed randomly with the smaller spaces. A number of short, narrow wall-flanked passages (Wth c. 2-2.5m) connect some fields, probably used to facilitate movement of stock. Many fields are strewn with boulders and field clearance cairns. Rough grass, bracken, heather and blackthorn scrub covers much of the area. The field system post-dates a cashel (MA073-004----) located within it, and is likely to date to the 19th century. It is now subsumed into a regular grid of large, modern rectangular fields. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 June 2021 - MA073-045001: Ringfort - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-045001-. In average pasture, broken by rock outcropping, with rising ground rises to N. A farmstead is located 50m to SSW. According to local tradition there was a ‘fort’ at this location. A very slightly raised, semi-circular area (30m E−W; 16m N−S) can be discerned which corresponds with a sub-rectangular area shown on the 1919 OS 6-inch map. It is defined on the curving side E−W by a slight scarp and bordered on the straight side at N by a WNW–ESE field wall. There is no visible trace of a continuation to N of the field wall. According to local information, it was originally enclosed by a ‘thick stone wall’; when the walls were removed, sand and gravel was extracted from this area, and bones were also exposed. The bones may have come from burials (MA073-045004-), which according to tradition were located here. Slight remnants of another scarp curving in a shallow arc (L 30m E–W) are evident 18m to S, corresponding with a roughly semi-circular area shown on the 1919 OS 6-inch map. A bullaun stone (MA073-045003-) is located on the SE edge of this scarp. A souterrain is located c. 15m N of this scarp and 10m to W of the northern scarp. According local information, fragments of iron slag were found in this field. A possible enclosure (MA073-046001-) and a bullaun stone (MA073-046002-) are located 50m to SW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 22 June 2021 - MA073-045002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-045002-. Associated with a possible cashel (MA073-045001-). Four close-set flat slabs, set in a N−S row with long axes E-W, are exposed on the surface of a low, sod-covered linear rise (L 7.3m N-S; Wth 1.2m E-W; H 0.1-0.4m). A fifth slab barely protrudes from the N end of the rise. The slabs are the roof lintels of a souterrain passage.
