In pasture, located on rising ground with very good views. There is a small stream 180m to W and a flat expanse of wet boggy ground to E. Indicated as a tree-planted circular enclosure on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; and as a penannular area defined by a field boundary, open to W, on the 1919 edition. The remains consist of a rise or small knoll on the E-facing slope of a ridge. A field fence has been scarped into base of the knoll, following its circular contour from NW−SW, enclosing an area of diameter c. 40m. The domed interior space has a flattish top or central area (diam. c. 10-12m) from which the slope inclines outwards, most steeply to E. This does not appear to be a rath. It is possible that the top of the knoll was used as a habitation site in the past but there is no definitive evidence of this now. The field fence enclosing the base of the knoll appears to be of relatively recent date. The remains as they now exist suggest a natural knoll which was enclosed in the modern era. It is dotted with clumps of brambles with hawthorn bushes around the perimeter. There is a rath (MA080-003----) 40m to SW. Located on a rush-grown terrace on the lower E-facing of a ridge, with extensive views over the surrounding lowlands to E−SE and hillier terrain to W. There is a small stream 160m to W and a flat expanse of wet boggy ground to E. There is a farmyard c. 50m to S. Roughly circular, slightly raised area (22.7m E−W; 24.8m N−S) defined by remnants of a bank, largely reduced to a scarp (Wth c. 2m; ext. H 0.6m). The scarp retains a slight moss-covered internal lip. The E arc of the scarp is incorporated into a later N−S field fence which respects its curve. This N−S field fence forms the E side of a small rectangular field which now encloses the rath. The rath interior has a dry, firm grassy surface, differentiating it from the surrounding terrace which is covered in rushes and clumps of brambles; it has a slight slope down from centre to E. Two possible enclosures (MA080-002----; MA080-004----) are located 40m to NE and 155m to SW, respectively. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 November 2021 - MA080-004: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA080-004----. In pasture, on a rise. There is a small stream 125m to W. A farmyard is located c. 50m to NE. Indicated as a tree-planted subrectangular enclosure (c. 30m E−W; c. 20-25m N−S) on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and as a penannular area defined by a field boundary, open to N, on the 1919 edition. When inspected in 1998 the remains consisted of a roughly C-shaped area (diam. 22.4m NNW−SSE) defined in a broad curve at SSE−NWW by a dilapidated scarp/field bank (Wth 0.8-1m; H 0.6m at NW, 0.9m at SW), engulfed in hawthorn bushes, which followed a natural contour. The ground within the arc of the field bank sloped gently to S. The outline of the subrectangular enclosure show on the 1838 OS 6-inch map could now be traced at ground level. Since then the curving field fence has been removed. The nature of the enclosure shown on the 1838 remains uncertain, but there is no clear evidence that it was a rath or enclosure of archaeological significance. There is a rath (MA080-003----) and a possible enclosure (MA080-002----) 40m and 200m to NNE, respectively.
