This record refers to a midden, which was noted in undulating, marram grass-covered sand dunes to E of Lackan Bay. In the SMR file it is listed in the same record as a house(MA008-007002-), which was recorded by Major Aldridge (NMI Correspondence Files, 1966), however, no details are given of the midden. The midden was not found when the area was inspected in 1995 and 2010. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 July 2019 - MA008-007002: House - indeterminate date, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA008-007002-. In an undulating expanse of sand dunes and grassland, which stretches E of Lackan Bay, just S of Kilcummin Head. This is the approximate location of a house found by Major Aldridge in the mid-20th century, and recorded by him in a sketch (NMI Correspondence files 1966). The sketch plan shows an oval area (11m E–W; 7m N–S), which appears to be defined by a low enclosing wall, with a small rectangular annex (4.5m N–S; 1.5m E–W) appended to the E side. In the wall at W three stones are set perpendicular to the wall, possibly defining an entrance. In the centre of the house there is a rectangular setting (0.4m E–W; 0.6m N–S) of four stones, annotated as a hearth; the N, E and S sides are defined by the stones, the W side is open. A note in the SMR file indicates that the house was located ‘a short distance to W of’ an enclosure (MA008-013----). The house, which may have been associated with a midden (MA008-007001-), was not found when the area was inspected in 1995 and 2010. In pasture, located on the edge of a cliff overlooking the E side of Lacken Bay. The long axis of the mound is oriented E–W and extends perpendicular to the cliff edge. A low, elongated mound (c. 69.3m E–W; c. 8-11m N–S; H 1.2m) was discovered in 1990 during the Fás-sponsored construction of a road which cut through the mound. Two cist graves (MA008-010002-; MA008-010003-) were exposed beneath the mound, and a rescue excavation of the cists was carried out by the National Museum in the same year (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 102-6). In 1991 another short excavation (E000617) was undertaken to investigate a number of upright stones exposed on the S side of the mound (Walsh, 1991). During the later excavation, a narrow cutting revealed a setting of five slabs, set on edge in an E–W row, which may have formed part of a kerb or revetment to the mound. A charcoal-rich layer (MA008-010004-), associated with burnt stone, was found immediately outside the row of stones. A number of possible chert implements were recovered. Located beneath an elongated mound (MA008-010001-), on a cliff edge overlooking the E side of Lacken Bay. This is one of two cists (see also MA008-010003-) discovered in 1990 during the Fás-sponsored construction of a road, which cut through the mound. A rescue excavation of the cists was undertaken in the same year by the National Museum (NMI Reg. No. 1990:54) (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 102-6). This cist (int. 1.62m E–W; 0.48m N–S; H 0.4m) had been disturbed, but remained largely intact. It was trapezoidal in plan, constructed of thin, shale slabs set on edge. The N side was formed of two slabs, one of which was exceptionally long (L 1.14m); three slabs formed the S side. Single slabs closed the E and W ends of the grave. It was roofed with flat slabs, six of which were found in a disturbed condition. Hard, compact sand formed the floor of the cist. No skeletal remains survived (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 102-6). The second cist (MA008-010003-) was situated 0.85m to NW, also beneath the mound. The exact relationship of the burials to the mound is uncertain. Located adjacent to an elongated mound (MA008-010001-), on a cliff edge overlooking the E side of Lacken Bay. Two cist graves (MA008-010002-; MA008-010003-), which underlay the mound, were excavated in 1990 by the National Museum in the same year (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 102-6). In 1991 another short excavation (E000617) was undertaken. It was confined to a small area on the S side of the mound, c. 6m from its mid point, where a number of large upright stones were exposed by road works (Walsh, 1991). A narrow cutting (2m N–S; 1.5m E–W) revealed a setting of five slabs, set on edge in an E–W row. These may have formed part of a kerb or revetment to the mound. A compacted charcoal-rich layer (T 0.05M), containing small fragments of burnt wood and small burnt stones, was found immediately outside the row of stones. It was overlain by thin sandy and gravelly layers containing charcoal fragments. A number of chert implements were recovered (Walsh, 1991). Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 July 2019 - MA008-010005: Slab-lined burial, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA008-010005-. Located beneath an elongated mound (MA008-010001-), on a cliff edge overlooking the E side of Lacken Bay. This is one of two cists (see also MA008-010002-) discovered in 1990 during the Fás-sponsored construction of a road, which cut through the mound. A rescue excavation of the cists was undertaken in the same year by the National Museum (NMI Reg. No. 1990:54) (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 102-6). This cist (1.83m E–W; 0.48m N–S; H 0.3m, int.) was rectangular in plan, constructed of long, thin slabs set on edge, some of which leaned outward slightly. The S side was formed of four slabs, and the N of three slabs. The E and W ends of the cist were not closed with stones. Three capstones, which had slipped from position, were found at the E end. The W half of the cist was partly paved with three slabs. The pit dug to take the cist was lined with clay. Two bones were recovered: an unidentifiable fragment, and a single femur of an adult human, possibly male, which lay on a paving slab. From the position of the femur, it was clear that the skeleton lay with its head at the western end of the cist. A sample of the bone was submitted for radiocarbon dating and yielded a calibrated date of 545-664 AD (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 105). The other cist (MA008-010002-) was situated 0.85m to SE, also beneath the mound. The exact relationship of the burials to the mound is uncertain. In pasture, located in a slight natural dip in a broad, open expanse of undulating grassland and grass-covered dunes, dotted with many hummocks and dips, and small sand quarrying pits. Rising undulations restrict views to S and W; views are more open to N–NE towards Kilcummin Head and E to Killala Bay. Sub-circular area (20m N–S; 17.3m E–W) defined by remnants of a bank with an external fosse. The bank (Wth 1.5-2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.35m, at W) survives only as a low hummocky, moss-covered rise, most clearly defined on the W half of the enclosure, and largely reduced to a scarp elsewhere. The fosse (Wth 1.5-2m, c. 1m base; ext. D 0.35m) appears as a shallow depression. The interior is flat, with an uneven surface, and is not noticeably raised above exterior ground level. The entrance is at the SSE, where there is a poorly defined gap (Wth 2.5-3m) in the bank and a slight causeway across the fosse. A tractor track skirts the S side of the enclosure.
