- MA063-032: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA063-032----. In rough stony pasture, located on a rocky rise, which provides good views in all directions, especially to N. This enclosure, possibly a cashel, consists of a roughly circular area (int.: 23.1m N−S; 24m E−W) defined by a drystone wall. It has been incorporated in to a later system of field walls, and now spans almost the full E-W width of a modern rectangular field. The enclosing wall (Wth 0.6-1m; int. H 1m) is narrow and roughly constructed of medium sized stones, with some large boulders in the basal layers; it resembles nearby field walls in construction and size. It appears, when viewed from the exterior, to sit on a broad sod-covered plinth of stones, which projects beyond the exterior edge of the wall. This may be the remnants of an original enclosing stone wall/bank, with a possible original width of c. 2m. On the N arc the plinth has a pronounced external scarp (H c. 1.6m) merging with the natural slope. At S−SE the scarp lower and is defined by a low kerb of large stones. It is possible that this stony plinth incorporates an accumulation of field clearance stones. There is no clearly entrance gap; current access is through a narrow, tumbled break at NNW. The interior has a rough, uneven surface, which reflects the natural contours of the rise; it is highest at N, sloping down from there to the W, with a more pronounced slope to NE and E. A small area of rock outcropping breaks the surface in the centre. The interior is planted with conifers. There is an old quarry pit (8-10m across) a few meters downslope to N of the enclosure. In rocky pasture, encompassing a slight natural rise. There is rising ground to S and SW, and a gradual fall of ground to N and NE. This enclosure is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is shown on the 1920 edition as a roughly D-shaped enclosure incorporated in to the S end of a rectangular field. Slightly raised roughly D-shaped area (int. 26m NNE−SSW; 34.6m WNW−ESE) defined at NW−NE by a curving drystone wall and at E, S and W by straight drystone walls. The curving portion of the wall does not have a smooth regular arc, but is undulating or kinked. The enclosing walls (Wth 1-1.4m; int. H 0.5m at NNE, 1.4m at SSW; ext. H 0.8 at W, 1.6m at SSW) are constructed of medium sized stone rubble, and are similar in size and form to adjacent field walls. There is a break (Wth 2.2m) at ESE and another (Wth 0.7m) at WMW. The interior has a slight slope down to N, and has an uneven surface, dotted with a few sod-covered boulders. A large heap of field clearance stones is piled against the exterior of the enclosure at NE. It is difficult to be certain about the nature/date of this enclosure. It is not shown on the 1838 map, and the current enclosing walls appear to be no earlier than other field walls in the area, i.e. probably 19th century in date, but it is possible that they have subsumed the remains of an early subcircular or oval enclosure. - Saint James's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1875–1880, Regional interest, registry number 31306309, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=MA&regno=31306309. Detached six-bay double-height Catholic church, built 1877; opened 1877, on a cruciform plan comprising four-bay double-height nave opening into single-bay (single-bay deep) double-height transepts centred on single-bay double-height chancel to crossing (east). Renovated, 1970, with sanctuary reordered. Pitched slate roof on a cruciform plan, roll moulded clay ridge tiles with tooled limestone ashlar buttressed gabled bellcote to apex to entrance (west) front framing embossed cast-bronze bell, and cast-iron rainwater goods on box eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Repointed snecked rock faced rubble stone walls with benchmark-inscribed drag edged tooled hammered limestone flush quoins to corners including drag edged tooled hammered limestone buttresses to corners to entrance (north-west) front having drag edged tooled cut-limestone "slated" coping. Lancet window openings with repointed drag edged tooled hammered limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals framing storm glazing over fixed-pane fittings having stained glass margins centred on square glazing bars. Paired lancet window openings (transepts) with repointed drag edged tooled hammered limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals framing storm glazing over fixed-pane fittings having stained glass margins centred on leaded stained glass panels. Lancet "Trinity Window" (east) with repointed drag edged tooled hammered limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals framing storm glazing over fixed-pane fittings having leaded stained glass panels. Paired lancet window openings to entrance (west) front with repointed drag edged tooled hammered limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals framing storm glazing over fixed-pane fittings having stained glass margins centred on leaded stained glass panels. Pointed-arch door openings (transepts) with repointed drag edged tooled cut- or hammered limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals framing timber boarded double doors. Full-height interior remodelled, 1970, with dragged cut-limestone stoups (west), carpeted central aisle between timber pews, paired stations between stained glass memorial windows (----) with round-headed arches (transepts) framing paired stained glass memorial windows (----), and pointed-arch chancel arch framing herring bone-pattern timber parquet stepped dais to crossing (east) with carpeted stepped "predella" supporting Gothic-style altar (1884) below stained glass memorial "Trinity Window" (----). Set in landscaped grounds.

Detached three-bay two-storey parochial house, extant 1914, on a T-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch to ground floor with single-bay two-storey gabled end bays including single-bay (two-bay deep) two-storey gabled projecting end bay. Pitched slate roofs on a T-shaped plan, quatrefoil-perforated crested terracotta ridge tiles with terracotta finials to apexes, paired rendered central chimney stacks having ogee-detailed cornices below stepped capping supporting terracotta pots, timber bargeboards to gables on ogee-detailed timber purlins, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on slightly overhanging exposed timber rafters retaining cast-iron downpipes. Rendered walls on rendered plinth with rusticated rendered piers to corners. Central door opening into house with timber mullions framing timber panelled door having sidelights on panelled risers. Square-headed window openings (first floor) with drag edged dragged cut-limestone sills on rendered "bas-relief" aprons, and rendered "bas-relief" surrounds framing one-over-one timber sash windows. Square-headed window openings (remainder) with drag edged dragged cut-limestone sills on rendered "bas-relief" aprons, and rendered "bas-relief" surrounds framing one-over-one timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): central hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors; dining room (north) retaining carved timber surround to door opening framing timber panelled door with timber panelled reveals to window openings; drawing room (south) retaining carved timber surround to door opening framing timber panelled door with timber panelled reveals to window openings; and carved timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors. Set in landscaped grounds with wrought iron piers to perimeter having ball finial-topped swan neck pedimented capping supporting wrought iron double gates.
