In improved pasture, located on a ridge, which provides excellent views, especially to N−NE. This possible rath is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an embanked enclosure, skirted by a road on the NW arc, and on the 1930 edition as an enclosure skirted by a field boundary at W and clipped by a road at NE. It has been levelled. The outline of a slightly raised circular area (c. 30m N-S; c. 27m E-W) can still be traced discernible, with remnants of an enclosing scarp surviving at W−NW where it is incorporated into a later field boundary (ext. H 1m). In pasture, located on a low E−W ridge, which provides good view over the surrounding undulating landscape, especially to NW and NE along the course of a broad, flat stream valley. Slightly raised oval area (30m N−S; 24.8m E−W) defined by a substantial drystone wall (Wth 1.4m). The external wall face retains much of its original wall construction, especially in the basal 2-3 courses which are intact and incorporate large limestone blocks and boulders. A section at W survives to a height of 5 courses (H 1.6m) and appears to be built on top of a low earthen scarp (H 0.3m), now partly obscured by a heap of field clearance stones and by hawthorn bushes. The upper courses of the external wall face consist of rough, uncoursed walling, possibly rebuilt in parts, with several area of outward slumping or collapse. The external wall face is lowest (max. H 0.6m) on the N arc, where it is topped with a low jumble of small stones, probably field clearance. The inner wall face stands to a height of 1-1.5m on the S arc, but appears crudely constructed, with much small stones piled on top, and is likely to have been at least partly rebuilt here in the modern era. On the N arc it has collapsed to a rough jumble of stones (max. int. H 0.7m), which barely rises above interior ground level in parts. There are low or slumped areas in the wall at SE, WSW and NNW but no clearly defined entrance gap. The interior is fairly level, but with occasional small sod-covered rises or undulations. A heap of stones (2.8m NE−SW; 2m NW−SE; H 0.3m) is piled against the inner wall face at S. In pasture, located on a rise, with a gradual fall of ground to N−NE. Indicated on the 1838 and 1930 OS 6-inch maps as an oval enclosure (c. 28m N−S; c. 23m E−W), named ‘Cashelbeg’. It has been destroyed; a slight oval rise (diam. c. 20m) is still discernible, crossed on its S edge by field wall on a roughly E−W axis. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 20 April 2021 - MA072-047001: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA072-047001-. In pasture, located on a ridge, at the break of slope on the NE-facing side, with excellent views in all directions. This cashel, named ‘Cashelmore’ on the 1838 and 1930 OS 6-inch maps, consists of a subcircular area (44.2m N-S; 43.3m E-W, int.) enclosed by a drystone wall. The wall is constructed of roughly square limestone blocks and boulders, with particularly large blocks in the basal courses and in the external wall face, especially at SW. The wall is largely intact on the W half of the cashel: it is most substantial at S−W (Wth 3.4m; int. H 1.8m; ext. H 1.7-2m), narrowing somewhat at NW (Wth 2.5m; int. H 1.5m; ext. H 1.8m). On the NE arc, the external wall face is intact (H 1.6m), standing on a scarp incorporating large boulders (H 1m), but the internal wall face has collapsed to a low sod-covered stony rise, almost flush with interior ground level. At E−ESE the external wall face has slumped to a broad, sod-covered jumble of stones, topped on its inner edge by a low rebuilt wall (Wth 0.7m; H 0.6m). On the SE arc the external wall face is intact (H 1.4m) but the inner face is reduced to a broad spread (Wth 3.5-4m; int. H 1m) of loose stones. An entrance passage (Wth 1.5m ext., 1.4m int.) at NNW is flanked by distinctive walling of massive horizontally laid slabs. The passage narrows slightly along its length from exterior to interior. A roof lintel (L 2.1m; Wth 0.5m) covers the outermost section of the passage; this was placed there by the landowner, but is said to be an original roof slab. A massive horizontally laid slab set in the largely collapsed inner wall face at SSE overlies a cavity now filled with loose stone. This may be remnants of a mural chamber or passage (Wth 1.35m; H 0.78m). A large slab jutting from the exterior face of the cashel wall may be part of the same structure. The interior of the cashel has a gently slope down from the SW quadrant to the N and NE. There is a large pile of loose clearance stones (7m NW−SE; 2m NE−SW; H 1.5m) in the SW quadrant, and a smaller heap (diam. c. 3m; H 0.8m) a few meters to NE. A drystone field wall, on a roughly N−S axis, cuts across the interior, slightly to E of centre. There is a souterrain (MA072-047002-) in the W half of the cashel. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 20 April 2021 - MA072-047002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA072-047002-. In the W half of a cashel (MA072-047001-). A lintelled opening at ground surface opens onto a subterranean passage (Wth c. 1.5m) of drystone construction, which extends for 3m to SSE, at which point it is blocked by a heap of stones. Immediately to N of the lintelled opening there is a shallow, grassed-over depression (L 2m N−S) representing a portion of collapsed passage, at the N edge of which a stone slab, can be felt beneath the sod, probably another in situ lintel.
