In an area of undulating, rough coastal pasture, located on a short headland overlooking the N end of Trabaun beach, on the W side of Kilalla Bay. Slightly raised circular area (31m N-S; c. 28m E-W) defined by low scarp (H 0.4m at NW, 0.8-1m at NE), which is incorporated into a later field wall on S−NNE. At NE-E where there is a natural fall of ground, the scarp has a stepped profile. The scarp is poorly preserved, being rather uneven and irregular in outline. It is intermittently topped with a slight stony rise, possibly the remnants of a bank or wall. The interior is level but has an uneven surface, broken at W and SW by a cluster of small irregular mounds and hollows. Further evidence of recent disturbance is evident in two small C-shaped areas quarried out of the scarp at the S. At the E a low L-shaped sod-covered stony bank (Wth 1.5m; H 0.2m) marks off an area (6m E-W; 7m N-S) against the perimeter of the platform. Appended to the external face of the scarp at SSE−SW is an oblong or sub-rectangular terrace (26.4m NE-SW; 7-8m NW-SE) defined externally by a scarp (H 0.7m; Wth slope 1m) with a slightly raised rim. Stones protruding from the sod suggest that the terrace scarp was faced with stone. A narrow, shallow gully (Wth 1.2m; D 0.1m) intervenes between the base of the rath scarp and the terrace. Circular raised area (22.6m N-S; 20.6m E-W) defined at W-SW by a low, sod-covered stone bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.7m), and elsewhere by a dilapidated scarp. The perimeter at W is incorporated into a N-S field wall; the field wall continues beyond the rath to N, but has been removed where it extended to S of the rath. An E-W field wall bisects the interior to the N of centre. Remnants of a farm track, originally flanked by field banks, and indicated on the 1922 OS 6-inch map, skirts the rath at NE-SE, possibly following the curve of a fosse or outer enclosing element. The interior slopes slightly to SE, and there is a gap (Wth 3m) at the SE which may be the original entrance. In the W half of the interior, close to the inner edge of the bank, low slabs in a N-S row protrude from the ground; it is not clear what these represent –possibly a remnant of a kerb. There is oblong depression (10.4m E-W; 3m N-S; D 0.5m) the SW quadrant. There is an enclosure (MA015-078----) 120m to SE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 November 2018 - MA015-021: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA015-021----. In pasture, located on a low E-W ridge, with good views, especially W-NE. To S ground gradually falls to a narrow area of damp, lowlying ground, beyond which is a parallel but higher ridge. Raised circular area (23.9m E-W; 26m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5m at N, 4.6m at S; int. H 0.4m at N, 0.7m at S; ext. H 0.8m at N, 2.2m at S) with an external fosse evident at SSE-W. Stones protrude randomly from the top and external slope of the bank. At W stones protruding from the base of the bank suggest remnants of a kerb. The fosse at SSE-S is a barely discernible depression, but at SW-W there is a well defined flat-bottomed cut (Wth 2.7-3m; ext. D 1.3m), which ends at W in a rounded terminal. The rath has a pronounced external slope on the S arc, and appears to have been built up here to create a level interior and to compensate for a natural fall of ground. There are two narrow breaks in the bank -at the SE (Wth 0.5m) and at the W (Wth 0.8m) -both of which appear to have been eroded by farm stock. The original entrance may have been at the E, where the bank has been truncated by a N-S field wall. This wall flanks an old farm track that overlies the fosse. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 November 2018 - MA015-022: Castle - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA015-022----. In pasture, located on a cliff edge, on the NW side of Rathfran Bay, overlooking the mouth of the Palmerstown River at S. The cliff drops to a rocky shore, which gives way, c. 200m to the N, to a small sand beach, named Trabaun, backed by cliffs. There are good views N to Kilcummin and S to Killala town. This castle is named ‘Castlenageeha’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. Documentary sources are silent about its history, but according to local tradition it was a Burke castle. It encompasses a roughly D-shaped area (c. 24m N-S; c. 18m E-W) defined on the straight side at E by the cliff edge, and on the curving side by a curtain wall which describes a shallow arc from the cliff edge at S to the NE, where it ends c. 8m short of the cliff edge. The curtain wall is ruinous, the internal and external wall faces having largely collapsed. Short sections of the original wall face can be glimpsed in parts, but for much of its length the wall now appears as a slumped rubble bank (Wth 3.5-4m; H 2.7m), concealed by a covering of grass and brambles. At the SW, a section (L c. 4m) of the wall survives intact, exhibiting rather rough masonry of large stone blocks, and a base batter. At the S, close to the cliff edge, the wall expands into a rectangular tower (6.2m NE-SW; H 4.2m NW-SE), which projects to NNE and SSW of the line of the wall. It is clearly shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. The tower appears to have been a later addition to the primary bawn wall. It is now ruinous; much of its external wall face has collapsed, and its internal features are inaccessible. There is also an expansion of the bawn wall at the NE end of its arc; on the 1838 OS 6-inch map it is depicted as a short return to S of the wall. Remnants of two divergent wall faces are visible, one NE-facing (Wth 5m) and the other N-facing, suggesting that there may have been another tower here, possibly a gate tower flanking an entrance. The garth or enclosed interior space of the castle is grass-covered, flat and featureless; the cliff edge within this area is now bordered by a modern field wall, set 2m back from the edge. In the eroding face of low cliff, located at the S end of Trabaun beach on Kilcummin Head, overlooking Killala Bay. Human bones were found eroding from the cliff face in April 2003. The find was investigated by the Gardai, who removed most of the bones, and subsequently excavated by the National Museum. The bones were concentrated in an area of 1.06m in width, at a depth of c. 0.36-0.54m below the top of the low cliff, and underlay a naturally-occurring layer of water rolled cobbles. The burial had been completely disturbed, but appears to have consisted of the inhumed remains of one individual. No evidence of a grave structure was found. According to the Gardai, a corroded iron object was found amongst the bones but was not retained. During the investigation by Museum staff, a second, smaller, concentration of bones (MA015-076002-) was found c. 4m to SE of the first bone concentration; they may represent bones displaced from this burial, or they may represent a second burial. The find was investigated by the Gardai, who removed most of the bones, and was subsequently excavated by the National Museum. Two concentrations of bones were found at a depth of c. 0.36-0.54m below the top of the low cliff, underlying a naturally-occurring layer of water rolled cobbles. One was a burial (MA015-076001-), completely disturbed, of the inhumed remains of one individual. The second concentration of bones (MA015-076002-) was found c. 4m SE, and comprised only foot bones and part of a pelvis. It may represent bones displaced from the burial (MA015-076001-) mentioned above, or it may be part of a second burial. No evidence of grave structures was found. (Cahill and Sikora 2011, 383-4). Located in pasture, on a gentle E-facing slope overlooking Killala Bay. The rocky shoreline and Trabaun beach are c. 150m to E and NE respectively. This enclosure is not shown on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It is poorly preserved and its original form is difficult to determine. It consists of a subcircular area (c. 38m E-W; c. 35-37m N-S) defined at NNW-SW by a low, irregular broadly-spread, sod-covered stony bank (Wth 3.7-5m; int. H 0.1-0.7m; ext. H 0.35m-0.7m) and at W by a poorly defined inward-facing scarp or slope. The bank has a more pronounced external slope at E where there is a natural fall of ground. There is a break (Wth 7m) in the bank at ENE. An E-W field wall bisects the interior to N of centre. Immediately to N of the wall, part of the interior has been quarried out leaving a semi-circular depression (6m N-S; 10m E-W). A heap of field clearance stone overlies the bank at the S. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
