In pasture, located on a low rise, with good views, in an area of undulating poor-average grassland. Raised circular area (27.4m N–S; 27.8m E–W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.6m at NE). The bank is low internally, reduced almost to a scarp but retaining a slight, stony internal rim. A low, gently sloping section (Wth 3.4m) of the bank at E may mark an original entrance. There is a souterrain (MA073-001002-) in the interior. The interior is planted with conifers, and the perimeter is ringed with a post and wire fence. A farm track, on a NW–SE axis, lies close to the SW edge of the rath. There is a sand pit a few meters to W of the rath. In a rath (MA073-001001). This souterrain is indicated as ‘Cave’ in the NW quadrant of the rath on the 1838 and 1919 OS 6-inch maps. There is no visible trace at ground level. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 June 2021 - MA073-002001: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-002001-. In pasture, located on a terrace or rise on a NW-facing slope, with extensive views SW–NE. Views are restricted at E–S by rising ground. Raised circular area (32m N–S; 32.3m) defined by a substantial drystone wall (Wth 3.3-4m; int. H 0.4-0.8m; ext. H 1.35-1.75m). The wall is constructed of random rubble with larger stones evident in the basal levels. The exterior wall face is highest at N–NE where there is a natural fall of ground. The inner wall face is low and largely tumbled. The wall has been modified or rebuilt in parts. At SE a later field wall is incorporated into the cashel wall but respects the original curve of the enclosure. At SW the cashel wall is replaced by a linear field wall on a NW–SE axis. Heaps of loose small stones, probably field clearance stones, are piled along the top of the wall. There is no clearly defined entrance; there is a narrow gap, now blocked up, in the wall at S, and another narrow gap (Wth 0.4m), also blocked up, at NW. A sod-covered stony terrace (Wth 4m) projects beyond the base of the cashel wall at WNW–NE, defined on its outer edge by an irregular scarp (H 1m), partly quarried away at N. A low spine (Wth c. 15m E–W) of raised ground with gently sloping sides extends through the centre of cashel on a roughly N–S axis, giving the interior a slightly domed profile. Traces of cultivation ridges on an E-W axis traverse the interior, most evident where they cross the central rise. The interior was used as a children’s burial ground (MA073-002002). Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 June 2021 - MA073-002002: Children's burial ground, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-002002-. In a cashel (MA073-002001). A children’s burial ground is indicated at the cashel on the 1919 OS 6-inch map. According to local tradition, two low, sod-covered mound of stones (2.4m E–W; 1.2m N–S; H 0.3m), one located against the inner face of the cashel wall at N and the other abutting the wall at S, are graves.
