In pasture, boxed into a small triangular field, located on a low rise. Circular area (c. 27m N-S) defined by a stony bank (Wth c. 4m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.6-0.7m), reduced to a scarp (H 1.45m at S) at SE−S. The bank/scarp is topped with stone, and remnants of external stone facing are evident at E and S. It is unclear to what extent this is original walling or the result of later modification. At the NE and NW the bank is incorporated into the line of later field walls. Overgrowth made inspection of the interior difficult. There is much stone scattered throughout. Roughly in the centre of the interior there is a gently raised area (diam. c. 5-6m), the S edge of which is defined by an E-W row of at least four medium-sized stones. The significance of this feature is uncertain, but it is possible that it relates to a souterrain ('cave') (MA063-026001), which according to local tradition is located somewhere in the interior. The cashel is engulfed in a dense thicket of hawthorn, ash, holly, and surrounded by loose heaps of field clearance stone. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 9 July 2020 - MA063-026001: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA063-026001-. In a cashel (MA063-026----). According to local tradition, there is souterrain in the cashel. A slight rise (diam. c. 5-6m) in the centre of the cashel interior is defined on its S edge by a row of c. 4 medium-sized stones. This may indicated the location of the souterrain. Otherwise there is no visible trace at ground level. In pasture, at a farmstead. A small circular feature, possibly a mound (diam. c. 10m), bordered on the W by NW−SE field boundary, is shown on the 1838 0S 6-inch map; it is not indicated on the 1920 edition, where a farmstead is shown on or adjacent to the location. No visible surface trace at ground level. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 9 July 2020 - MA063-028001: Burial ground, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA063-028001-. In a cashel (MA063-028001). A burial ground is indicated in the cashel on the 1838 and 1920 OS 6-inch maps. The cashel interior is bisected, slightly S of centre, by a stone wall (Wth 0.8m; H 0.8m) on an E-W axis. To S of the bisecting wall, several small, low upright uninscribed stone slabs protrude from the ground. They appear to be grave markers. The area in general is strewn with much stone, and largely obscured by blackthorn. According to local information the burials were mainly of unbaptised babies. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 9 July 2020 - MA063-028002: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA063-028002-. In pasture, encompassing a natural rise, bordered to the S by an area of low-lying, wet ground, beyond which the ground rises to a low ridge. A house is located immediately to the NE. Roughly circular area (30m E-W; c. 27m N-S) defined by a drystone wall (Wth 2.3m at SW, 2.8m at E; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.8m), and enclosed at SE−NW by remnants of an outer wall with an intervening gap or fosse (Wth 4-5m). The cashel has been incorporated into a later system of field walls. The inner wall, composed of rough field stones, is of drystone construction, and is similar in appearance, though more substantial, to adjacent field walls. It is best preserved SE−SSW where sections of the external stone facing, incorporating large boulders, remain intact. Elsewhere much of the exterior wall face has collapsed to a loose tumble of stones. At NNW−NE the wall survives only as a low, sod-covered rise, bordered on its outer edge by later field walls, and at NE−SE it has been incorporated into/overlain by a later field wall. The outer wall survives mainly as a low, sod-covered stony rise, with a basal row of large stones visible at NW. It is partly obscured by a growth of scrub. The outer wall has been levelled on the NE arc, and a house, shed and later field walls partly overlie this area. There is no clearly defined entrance. The current access is at the W through a collapsed section of wall. The interior appears to be at a slightly higher level in the SW quadrant, with a gentle slope down from there to the N. It is bisected, slightly S of centre, by a stone wall (Wth 0.8m; H 0.8m) on an E-W axis. The interior was used as a burial ground (MA063-028001-). The enclosing walls are ringed with blackthorn scrub and ferns, which also encroach on the interior, especially at the S and W. The N half of the interior is relatively open and grassy. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 9 July 2020 - MA063-029001: Ringfort - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA063-029001-. In pasture, in a thicket of brambles and ferns, located on a low NW−SE rise with a gradual fall of ground to N. A circular embanked enclosure is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; a souterrain (MA063-029002-), indicated as ‘Cave’, in shown in its centre; on the 1920 edition only the ‘Cave’ is shown. When inspected in 1996 the area was obscured by overgrowth, but no upstanding remains of the ringfort were evident at ground level. In ringfort (MA063-029001-). A souterrain, indicated as ‘Cave’ is shown in the centre of the ringfort on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. A grassed-over rectangular depression (L 3m; Wth 0.8-1m; D 0.3m at NE, 0.8m at SW) is evident at ground surface, extending for 3m on a NE−SW axis. This represents a length of roofless, collapsed souterrain passage. At its deeper SW end two large slabs, displaced lintels, tip into the depression, and an in situ lintel covers an opening into an intact length of passage (Wth 1m) with drystone walls and lintel roofing, which extends to SW for several meters.
