In pasture, located on rising ground overlooking a broad valley to S, with a gentle fall of ground into the valley bottom. The townland boundary is c. 15m to NW. Circular platform (36.3m N–S; 38.5m E–W) defined by a scarp and enclosed by a fosse with an external bank. The scarp (H 1.4m) at N retains a slight internal lip, suggesting that there was originally a bank here with a width of c. 3.5-3.8. The fosse (Wth 3m) is well defined and flat-based. The external bank (Wth 2m at N, 3.3m at S; int. H 0.35-0.4m; ext. H 0.4m at N, 0.8m at S) is low and relatively narrow, with stones protruding randomly from its sides. At S the fosse and external bank take the form of a terrace with a scarp on its outer edge topped by a slight lip. The interior is level, except for the SE quadrant where there is a marked slope down to E. A low linear S-facing scarp (H 0.4m) extends from the perimeter at ENE for c. 15m to SW through the interior, ending at a low stony rise at the stump of a hawthorn tree roughly in the centre of the interior. At E a slump (Wth 2m) in the scarp drops to a passage (Wth 2.7m) across the fosse, defined on the N side by a S-facing scarp (H 0.55m), incorporating large stones, and on the S side by a more degraded S-facing scarp (H 0.3m). There is a corresponding break in the external bank. These features may be modified remnants of an original entrance. There is also a break (Wth 2.6m) in the scarp at W with a corresponding low area in the external bank, but these appear to be of relatively recent date. Two irregular-shaped quarry pits cut through the scarp and extend into the interior, one at SE (12m NE–SW; 8.5m NW–SE; D over 2m) and another at the SW (7m NE–SW; 6.5m NW–SE; D c. 2m), and disturbance to the fosse and external bank is also evident at these points. Relict cultivation ridges, on a roughly NE–SW axis, traverse the interior. Grass cover, with perimeter sparsely ringed with hawthorn. Another rath (MA102-019----) is located c. 230m to E. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 26 September 2022 - MA102-019: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA102-019----. In pasture, straddling a prominent rise with a marked fall of ground to S, providing good views NE–SW along a stream valley. The S side of the valley is bordered by the sheltering curve of a sinuous esker that overlooks the rath. Oval platform (33m NE–SW; 44.5m NW-SE) defined by a scarp with an external fosse. The scarp (ext. H 0.9-1.2m at N, 1.9m at S) retains a low internal rim at W–NE suggestive of a bank with an original width of c. 2.7m. The external slope is greatly enhanced by the natural fall of ground. The fosse is visible at N–NE as a shallow depression (Wth 2-2.5m), marked by a growth of nettles, but is barely discernible elsewhere around the circuit. In the interior, a gentle slope down from N to S becomes steeper in the S third, mirroring the natural contours of the rise. There is a pronounced slump and a break (Wth 1.4m) in the scarp at ESE which may indicate the original entrance. Faint cultivation ridges traverse the interior on a roughly E−W axis. Grass cover; perimeter lightly ringed with hawthorn trees. There is a grassed-over quarry pit (diam. c. 7m) immediately to NW of the rath. Another rath (MA102-018----) is located c. 230m to W. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 26 September 2022 - MA102-020: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA102-020----. In pasture; it appears to have encompassed a low rise. A circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 30m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. It is not shown on the 1916 edition where the curving line of a field fence appears to preserve the S arc of the enclosure. There is no visible trace at ground level. In pasture, located on a low rise. There are good views over gently undulating terrain, restricted somewhat to N by rising ground. Not shown on the 1838 1916 OS 6-inch map; a subcircular hachured enclosure (c. 35m E−W; c. 30m N−S), crossed roughly centrally by a field boundary on NE–SW axis, is shown on the 1916 edition. Levelled during land reclamation; the ephemeral outline of a roughly circular area (diam. c. 33m) can still be traced at ground level. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 26 September 2022 - MA102-054: Burnt mound, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA102-054----. In a field of damp rush-grown pasture, converted to forestry. This burnt mound is located in the NE quadrant of a field, close to the E boundary and opposite an entrance gate. It was discovered in 2002 during archaeological monitoring on the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme (2001-2002). It was recorded and sampled under licence 01E0314 (Guinan 2015, 104, 113-116; Cloontumper I).There was no above ground trace of a mound but burnt stone and charcoal was noted in the extreme edge of the pipeline wayleave. A charcoal sample was retrieved for radiocarbon dating, and produced a Late Neolithic Age date (3462+/- 44 BP (1899-1681 BC)) (Guinan 2015, 114). In 2012 the burnt mound was damaged by a private forestry plantation. Burnt stone fragments and dark soil are exposed in a N–S forestry trench (Wth 1m; D 0.2m) and in heaps of upcast soil from the trench. In the section face, the burnt material is visible as a thin layer (D c. 0.1m) which can be traced intermittently for 2-3m N–S, but the quantities of burnt material are relatively meagre. It is not possible to determine the exact limits of the burnt mound. It is possible that the forestry trench clipped the W edge of the mound and that the remainder lies concealed in undisturbed ground between the trench and the E edge of the field. There is a burnt mound (MA102-55----) 15m to SW, and a fulacht fia (MA102-56----) c. 45m to SW. In a field of damp rush-grown pasture, converted to forestry. This burnt mound is visible as a concentration (5m E–W; 1m N–S) of angular burnt stone fragments, in a matrix of black charcoal-rich soil, in the base of an E–W forestry trench (Wth 1m; D 0.3m). In the shallow section faces of the trench, a thin layer of peaty topsoil overlies the burnt material. There is no trace of a mound at surface level and the burnt material does not extend into parallel trenches, which lie 6-7m to N and S. There is a burnt mound (MA102-54----) 15m to NE, and a fulacht fia (MA102-56----) 15m to WSW. (Guinan 2015, 113, 116-117, Cloontumper III). Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 June 2013 - MA102-056: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA102-056----. In a field of damp rush-grown pasture, converted to forestry. This fulacht fia was discovered in 2002 during archaeological monitoring on the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme. At the time of discovery the mound was intact. It appeared as a sod-covered, roughly circular mound (12m x 11m; H 0.75m) with a slight depression indicating the probable location of a trough. It lay outside the pipeline wayleave and was not impacted by the water scheme (Guinan 2015, 113, 115-116, Cloontumper II). During winter 2012/2013 a forestry development was undertaken in the field and, in the course of the works, the fulacht fia was levelled and bisected by a forestry trench. The outline of the mound is still evident as a very slightly raised, circular area (c. 13m E–W; c. 11m N–S) bisected on the S half by the E–W forestry trench (Wth 1m; D 0.3-0.4m). A dense concentration of angular burnt stone fragments, in a matrix of black charcoal-rich soil, is exposed in the base and in the section faces of the trench. There is a burnt mound (MA102-55----) 15m to ENE, and another burnt mound (MA102-54----) c. 45m to NE.
