On a low flat-topped rise in lowlying pasture, bordering a broad expanse of flat wet pasture and bog (now partly reclaimed). It is in a natural basin enclosed by ridges at E−SE and W−NW. Indicated as ‘Castle (in Ruins) on the 1838 and 1915 OS 6-inch maps; on the 1914 edition an E−W rectangular building is depicted, incorporated into a N−S wall. No visible trace at ground level. According to local information, the last remnants of the castle were removed in the 1980’s. At that time it was very ruinous, with only part of one wall standing. Stones taken from the castle are said to have been used to build walls and farm buildings in the past. During the most recent clearance, the stones were simply buried. According to local tradition, the castle was owned by the Blakes. In a rectilinear pasture field, on a low rise in gently undulating terrain. There are extensive views SSW−NW over a lowlying basin of grassland, much of which is reclaimed from originally wet and boggy ground. A low ridge restricts views to N−E. A farmyard lies immediately to E. Broadly oval platform (44.5m N−S; 53.3m E−W) defined by a scarp, outside which there are traces of a fosse with external bank. The overall plan appears to be suboval or subrectangular with rounded corners. The scarp (ext. H 1.8m) is most substantial at SSW−NW, built up to compensate for a natural fall of ground, and retaining a hint of an internal rim at S−SW (Wth 4.6m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1m). At N−NNE it is reduced to a low slumped area, allowing tractor access to the interior. It is quite well defined at E−SE but at SE−S it is again low and disturbed. The fosse is evident as a shallow depression (Wth c. 3m) at SW−NNW. There is a causeway-like break (Wth c. 3m) at N, and at NE−E the fosse is barely discernible, merely a slight dip marked by yellow flag irises. Remnants of the levelled outer bank are visible as a low rise (Wth 5.5m; H 0.3m) on the outer edge of the fosse at SW−W but peter out at NW. The NW quadrant and centre appears to be slightly higher than the rest of the interior. In pasture, on top of a NW-SE ridge, close to break of slope on SW side, with extensive views over broad expanse of grassland; the Partry Mountains define the horizon at W. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; shown on the 25-inch plan as a circular hachured enclosure (diam. c. 20m) and on the 1915 OS 6-inch edition as a semi-circular hachured area bordered on the straight side at SE by a field boundary. Originally circular, the SE half of this enclosure has been leveled. The remains now consist of a low, roughly D-shaped platform (18.7m NE-SW; 10m NW-SE) defined on curving side at SSW−NE by a dilapidated earthen scarp (H 0.5-0.7m). The straight side to SE is bordered by the remnants of a stony field bank that has been removed elsewhere in the field. A single hawthorn tree grows on the scarp at NNW. The platform has an uneven surface and the enclosing scarp is rather irregular and degraded. A cluster of six boulders rests on the E half of the platform -this appears to be a random arrangement, possibly the result of field clearance. A low scarp (Wth 0.6m; H 0.4m) extends from the cluster of boulders across the centre of the platform on a NNW−SSE axis, marking a change in interior ground level, with a marked slope down to E from here. The W-facing slope of the ridge, c. 4m W of the enclosure, is artificially scarped, with traces of stone facing. This is probably a 19th century field boundary. It is shown as a line of hachuring on the OS maps.
