In pasture, located on a terrace on the N-facing slope of an E–W ridge, in hilly, undulating terrain broken by limestone outcropping. There are good views to N along the E–W routeway of the valley and of a parallel ridge on opposite side. Sub-circular area (67m N–S; 69m E–W) enclosed by a drystone wall (Wth 0.8-1.4m; H 1-1.2m). The wall is rather roughly constructed of medium and large limestone boulders and is intact for most of its circuit. Certain sections, particularly at NW–N, may have been rebuilt in the recent past. At N there is a low sod-covered stony plinth at the base of the wall. This may be simply wall tumble, or it may represent a more substantial, projecting foundation on this side to compensate for the natural fall of ground. There are breaks at ESE (Wth 0.7m) and at SSW (Wth 2.5m) which allow access to the interior but it is not clear if either of these represents an original entrance. The interior is not noticeably raised; it is fairly level but with an uneven surface. There is evidence for internal divisions: At N a slightly sunken subrectangular area (15.7m N–S; 36.6m E–W) abutting cashel wall is defined on the S side by a low sod-covered curving scarp. From the SW edge of this space, a slight grass-covered rise (Wth c. 2m; H 0.3m) zig-zags toward the cashel wall at W. Ephemeral features and changes of level in the E and S of the interior suggest other divisions but have no coherent pattern and are difficult to interpret. Some or all of these features may relate to modification/reuse of the enclosure in the relatively recent past. There is a souterrain (MA093-006002-) in the interior (pers. comm. Leo Morahan). The cashel has been incorporated into a later system of field walls which radiate from the cashel wall at SW, NW E and SE, and the cashel interior space now serves as a pasture field. Clumps of blackthorn and hazel occur at intervals around the perimeter, densest at SW–W. The interior is grassy, dotted with thistles and ferns, with encroachment of blackthorn scrub at W and SE. There is a souterrain in Coolnaha South cashel (MA093-006001-) (Pers. comm. Leo Morahan, SMR file). A slightly raised, sod-covered feature (Wth c. 2m; H 0.3m) which follows a zig-zag course through the NW quadrant of the cashel could possibly be a surface indication of the souterrain, although there was no clear evidence to confirm this. It extend for 12m to SW into the interior from the cashel wall at NW, then turns to NNE for 8.3m and turns again to ENE for 12-13m. In pasture, adjacent to a cashel (MA093-006001-) in hilly, undulating terrain broken by limestone outcropping. Relict field walls, enclosed within large modern rectilinear fields to S and W of the cashel, are recorded in an aerial photograph (GSI M 553 -2; Roll 214, pr. 5; SMR file). The walls can be traced within the modern field immediately to S of the cashel as low lines of tumbled stones and boulders. They are fragmentary but appear to have enclosed sub-rectangular field plots (max. dim. 30-50m), generally respecting the natural undulations of the local terrain. In the adjoining modern field to W the relict walls were removed during land reclamation. In pasture, straddling the top and NE slope of a knoll-like undulation on the NE-facing slope of a prominent ridge. The rising ridge slope restricts views to S–SW, but there are excellent views N–NE. Sub-circular area (36.5m E–W; 30m N–S) enclosed by a collapsed stone wall. The enclosing wall appear originally to have had a width of c. 2m, but it survives now as a broad band of loose jumbled stones, largely moss covered (Wth 3.7-4m at E, 2-2.5m at W; int. H c. 0.4m; ext. H 0.8-1m). There are two breaks, one to NE (Wth 3.5m), and one to SW (Wth 4m). The interior mirrors the natural slope of the ridge, with an arc of level ground in the W half from which the ground slopes markedly to NE-SE. There is a souterrain (MA093-008002-) in the SW quadrant. Immediately outside the cashel wall to SE, is a possible hut site (MA093-008003-). The cashel has been incorporated into the line of a NE-SW field boundary on its W arc and is skirted here by a farm track. The perimeter is thickly ringed with hazel and blackthorn. There are clumps of nettles, thistles and brambles in the interior. The souterrain is indicated by two adjacent areas of surface subsidence, each of which reveals an in situ stone roof lintel. Due to a natural fall of ground the external height of the wall increases to 1m at E-SE. The interior appears slightly sunken relative to exterior ground level, but is partly infilled with loose stone, probably field clearance stones, and obscured by hazel and blackthorn scrub. This may be the remnants of a hut site. In pasture, located on a fairly level terrace on a SE-facing ridge slope, with very good views SE–S, in an area of hilly terrain. Views to NW are restricted by rising ground. A circular area (36.5m N–S; 34.5m E–W) defined by a stone bank/wall (Wth c. 3.8m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.4m). The stone bank survives as a broad, low sod-covered rise from which stones protrude randomly. It is best preserved NE–E, where a number of large horizontally set stones may represent the basal course of stone facing. The wall is severely degraded at NW on the upslope side, and at SSE–WSW it is incorporated into a later field wall which respects the curve of the enclosure. The interior is not noticeably raised, and slopes down gently from centre to SE. There is no clearly defined entrance feature. A collapsed souterrain (MA093-009002-) is visible in the W half. Located in the W half of a cashel (MA093-009001-). A collapse length of souterrain passage is evident as a linear depression (Wth 2.3m; D 0.5m) that extends from the cashel wall at WSW into the interior for 7m to the ENE. An in situ roof lintel is visible at the WSW end of the depression. At the ENE, the depression ends at a heap of large stones. The depression is largely sod-covered and its base is colonised by small blackthorn bushes. A D-shaped area (c. 34m NE–SW; 27m NW−SE to field wall) defined on the curving side at N–SW by a ruined stone bank (Wth 2-2.5m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.5m at E), and on the straight side at NW by a field wall on a NE–SW axis. The enclosing stone bank is reduced to a slight rise at N–NE. It is best preserved at E where it survives as a low rise of earth and stone, incorporating some loose field clearance stones. There are two adjacent breaks (Wth c. 3m) at SE–S and a larger break (Wth 7.3m) at SSW. The interior, which is not significantly raised above exterior ground level, has a slight slope down from centre to SE. Traces of cultivation ridges on a NE–SW axis, are evident in the interior, and can also be seen in the surrounding field to N and E. Slightly SE of centre, there is a partly sod-covered heap (6.5m NE–SW; c. 3m NW–SE; H 0.5m) of field stones. The interior is grassy, and the enclosing stone bank is marked by sod and ferns. Remnants of an E−W field wall clip the SE–S edge of the enclosure. This appears to be the SW half of an originally circular enclosure, but there is no trace now at ground level of the NW half of enclosure to NW of the field wall.
