This road is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. It is indicated by parallel dashed lines on the 1916 edition where it is named ‘Porsh-a-Thoggarth’. The most likely Irish form is Póirse an tSagairt or priest’s road. Dinneen's dictionary explains póirse as "a porch, an entry, a gate; a narrow road, passage or laneway; any narrow place, a hole..." (pers. comm. Dónall Mac Giolla Easpaig, Chief Placenames Officer, and Fiachra Mac Gabhann). It appears to have served as a mass path leading to an ecclesiastical complex which includes a cashel (MA093-014005), a children's burial ground (MA093-014002), a bullaun stone (MA093-014003) and a holy well (MA093-014006). The road can no longer be traced along its full length, although sections are preserved in the line of extant field boundaries and farm tracks. In rough ground on the margins of Ballyhaunis Golf Course, located on the flat summit of a high hill, towards the NE edge where the hill slope falls away steeply. The location provides excellent views in all direction Not indicated on any edition of the OS maps. No upstanding remains of the enclosure are visible. It was extant in early 1900’s when recorded by Knox (1914, 42-3) who described it as ‘a low earthen ring, the garth about 1 foot [0.3m] and the ring about 2 feet [0.6m] above the field level, into which it fades, about 36 feet [11m] in diameter overall.’ The SW arc of the bank was already missing at that date. A cross-inscribed stone (MA093-011002-) stands at the location. According to Knox this stone stood in the E half of the enclosure, close to the enclosing bank. A band (Wth c. 4m) of dense nettles and brambles, which curves around the stone at S and E, may mirror the SE curve of the enclosure bank. There is now no visible trace of the enclosure at ground level to N or W of the stone; a straight E-W field wall located 3m N of the cross-inscribed stone may overlie the N edge of the enclosure. In rough ground, covered in long grass, on the margins of Ballyhaunis Golf Course, within an enclosure (MA093-0100001-) located towards the NE edge of the flat summit of a high hill, with excellent views in all direction Not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; indicated on the 1916 edition as ‘Standing Stone’. Irregular-shaped sandstone slab (Wth 0.4m at base, 0.52m at top, E−W; T 0.23m; H 0.84m) set upright in the ground. The broad face of the stone expands at the top, projecting slightly to S. A single-line ringed-cross is incised on the narrow N face of the stone at a height of c. 0.2m above current ground level and c. 0.4m below the top of the stone. The incised ring (diam. c. 11cm) spans the narrow width of the stone, and is in fact roughly C-shaped rather that a complete circle: The incised curve is incomplete on the E side where it is defined only by the straight edge of the stone. It is possible that a portion of the carving/edge of the stone broke off in the past, or it may simply have been a misjudgement in the execution of the carving due to the narrowness of this side of the stone. The horizontal arms of the cross span the full with of the circle. The shaft of the cross extends c. 11cm below the ring, giving an overall height of the cross of c. 22-22.5cm The carving is now very indistinct, its outline more easily traced with fingers than the eye. The stone surface is mottled with pale-coloured lichen, and the moss grows on the lower part of the stone. A low stone (max. dim. 0.22m; H 0.2m) protrudes from the ground adjacent to the base of the cross-inscribed stone on its W side; possibly intended as a support for the cross-inscribed stone, but it does not appear to abut it directly. When seen by Knox (1914, 42-43) in the early 1900’s, the cross-inscribed stone was encircled by an enclosure (MA093-011001-) (diam. c. 10m), of which there is now no trace. The stone stood close to the enclosing bank at E, however, that may not have been its exact original location: Knox noted that ‘Some forty years ago it was being carted away for building, but the neighbours rescued it and replaced it, probably in the original position.’ A squat upright limestone block (H 0.72m; L 0.5m N−S; Wth base 0.4m, 0.14m at top) is located 8m N of the cross-inscribed stone in the adjoining field. It is unclear if it has any archaeological significance. In pasture, crowns the top of a low rise, in an area of undulating grassland with an expanse of wet land to NE. Views are good but not extensive. A circular area (diam. 10-11m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 2-2.6m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.4m). The broad, seamless inward slump of the bank produces the impression of a slightly concave interior. The bank is largely sod-covered but appears to be composed of stony earth, incorporating large stones in parts. There is a degraded section/break (Wth c. 2m) at SSE. Grass-covered, with a single hawthorn at NE. A mound barrow (MA093-012002-) is located slightly downslope c. 20m to W, and there is a standing stone (MA093-011002-) on a prominent ridge 550m to W. In pasture, located on the E edge of a rise, in an area of undulating grassland with an expanse of wet land to NE. Views are good but not extensive. Roughly circular mound (diam. 6.6m NW–SE; H 0.6m at NW, 0.8m at SE) of earth and stones. The top of the mound at NW–N is defined by a slightly raised rim; some of this may be an accumulation of field clearance stones. Loose stone is scattered generally over the surface of the mound. The mound is lowest and somewhat degraded at SSW, and is thickly covered in hawthorn and brambles. An embanked barrow (MA093-012001-) is located slightly upslope c. 20m to W. In pasture, located on top of a ridge, straddling the break of slope, with excellent views overlooking rolling grassland to W and to E-SE a broad expanse of bog, now under forestry. This ecclesiastical enclosure is not shown on 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is indicated as ‘cashel’ on the 1916 edition. It is recorded in an aerial photograph (GSI M 553 –2; Roll 214, pr. 6; SMR file). It is largely incorporated into a later system of drystone field walls, and is skirted at E by a farm track. Broadly oval enclosure (114.9m E–W; 87.4m N–S) defined SW–NE by a low stone bank/wall topped by a later field wall, and ENE–ESE by a scarp (Wth slope 1.4m; H 0.6m) cut into the hill slope. The stone bank survives as a broad, low stony rise (Wth c. 2.5m) which protrudes from beneath the later field wall (Wth 0.7m; H 0.8m). The scarp at E is defined on top by a rough line of stones protruding from the sod. The interior is generally level, except in the E quarter where it slopes down to the E reflecting the natural slope of the ridge. The interior encloses a ringfort (MA093-014005-) in the NW quadrant and a children’s burial ground (MA093-014002-) and a bullaun stone (MA093-014003-) in the E half. Slight remnants of a bank or wall extend from the W corner of the children’s burial ground to W across the interior of the ecclesiastical enclosure, and a similar wall extends S from the S corner to meet a field wall that extends to S from the ecclesiastical enclosure. According to local tradition, there is also a souterrain (MA093-014007-) within the ecclesiastical enclosure. A holy well (MA093-014006-) is located c. 20m to ESE at the base of the ridge, and adjacent to this is a possible horizontal-wheeled mill (MA093-072---). Located in the E half of an ecclesiastical enclosure (MA093-014001-) which also encloses a ringfort (MA093-014005-). This children’s burial ground is known locally as the ‘Caldragh’. A roughly trapezoidal area (32.2m NE–SW; 28.7m NW–SE at NE end, 35m at SW end) defined on NE side by a stone bank/wall footings (2.30m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.5m), on SE by a scarp (1.2m) cut into the natural slope, on SW by a low stony rise or scarp. To NW the enclosing element is barely discernible. Traces of an internal division on a NW–SE axis can be seen in the SW of the interior. Located to NE of centre, there is a low sod-covered rise (c. 3m N–S; 2m E-W; H 0.2m) possibly a grave. To N of this a number of ephemeral parallel linear rises, on a NW–SE axis can be seen traversing the interior. Along the line of the SW enclosing wall, there is a concentration of stones, some prostrate, some protruding upright from the sod, including a single, crudely cross-shaped stone (H 0.43m; Wth of arms 0.4m; T 0.08m). Protruding from a tuft of grass at the W corner of a children’s burial ground (MA093-014002-), located within the E half of an ecclesiastical enclosure (MA093-014001-). A polygonal, flat-topped slab of stone (max. dim. 0.6m; T c. 0.2m) on the upper surface of which is a central circular depression (diam. 0.28m; D 0.09m). Located in the NW quadrant of an ecclesiastical enclosure (MA093-014001-). Slightly raised circular area (27.6m E–W) defined E–NW by a low scarp (H 0.5m). The scarp has been levelled on the N arc, so that it is almost flush with the surrounding ground level of the ecclesiastical enclosure. At NE–E the enclosing scarp merges with a low sod-covered bank (Wth 2m; H 0.1-0.6m) that extends 20m beyond the ringfort, crossing the interior of the ecclesiastical enclosure to NE. The ringfort interior is level and grassy. Located slightly E of centre, is a low, sod-covered rise (4.7m E–W; c. 4m N–S; H 0.3m), irregular in plan, of unknown significance. Another sod-covered rise (2m E–W; 1.5m N–S; H 0.4m) abuts the enclosing scarp at E. On the 1916 OS 6-inch map the interior of the ringfort is marked with a cross symbol, annotated ‘Kildunagha (Site of)’, perhaps suggesting the site of a church (MA093-014004-). There is a children’s burial ground (MA093-014002-) and a bullaun stone (MA093-014003-) 14m to E of the ringfort, also within the bounds of the ecclesiastical enclosure. In pasture, located in a natural depression overshadowed c. 20m to NW by a ridge, on top of which is an ecclesiastical enclosure (MA093-014001-) which encloses a ringfort (MA093-014005-), a children’s burial ground (MA093-014002-) and bullaun stone (MA093-014003-). To E-SE of the well, is a flat, lowlying expanse of damp pasture, now planted with forestry. This holy well is named ‘Tubberthana’ on the 1916 OS 6-inch map. It consists of a roughly rectangular pool (4m N–S; 2m E–W) fed by a natural spring. At the time of visit, the pool was choked with pond weed, and was enclosed by a post and wire fence. Within the grounds of Ballyhaunis Golf course. Encompassing a low elevation in undulating terrain with excellent views S−W over expanses of mixed pasture and bog. Ground rises to NW and to NE; a line of conifers blocks views to N. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; shown on the on the 1916 edition as a circular enclosure (diam. 45-50m), outline by a single ring of hachures, named ‘Cashel’. The remains are evident as a raised roughly circular area (diam. c. 40-45m) covered in a densely matted carpet of scutch grass, 0.4m or more in depth, which obscures all detail. There is no visible trace of an enclosing wall or of the souterrain (MAA093-025002-), which according to local information is located in the cashel interior. The thick hummocks of grass create a very uneven surface, with several narrow ‘trenches’ or ‘tunnels’ extending through it, which may be rabbit runs. A few hawthorn bushes grow on the perimeter at W. A small gravelled road skirts the SE-S arc and the golf course fairways and green are immediately to W and N. This crannog is shown on the 1838 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps as small, circular island. It is a circular structure (diam. c. 27.5m N−S) with a raised centre which slopes down towards the surrounding water level, with a sudden drop at the edge to a depth of c. 2m. When inspected in 1988, timber stakes were noted protruding around the stony edge of the crannog just below water level, and a large amount of animal bone was visible scattered around the edge. It is densely overgrown with bushes, reeds and nettles. Another crannog (MA093-090----) is located c. 120m to NE.
- MA093-072: Water mill - horizontal-wheeled, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA093-072----. Sited in a natural depression bordered to the E by a flat expanse of boggy ground, now under forestry. At the N edge of the depression is a natural spring, used as a holy well (MA093-014006-). Overlooked to S by a low hillock, and to NW by a hill on top of which is an ecclesiastical enclosure (MA093-014001-). A horizontal water mill was uncovered during drainage works in 1997 (SMR file). A millstone and eight individual timbers were exposed. One of the timber consisted of a beam (L 2.6m; Wth 0.19m; D 0.28m) with two rectangular mortice holes (L c. 0.2m; Wth c. 0.1m; D c. 0.11m) in one face. Some of the timbers were displaced by the ground works, but three planks remained in situ in the N−S drain. They lay parallel to each other on a NE−SW axis, with a gap of c. 0.25m between each plank. There were several large stones in the vicinity of the planks. According to local information, the timbers were reburied. The millstone consists of a roughly circular sandstone block (diam. 0.68m; T 0.28m) with a central circular perforation (0.012m).
