This mound barrow was evident as a low, circular grass-covered mound when in 1937 it was quarried for sand and stone for road building. During the quarrying, a cremated burial with food vessel was exposed. Further burials were uncovered in 1939. The National Museum subsequently undertook an excavation of the barrow, approximately half of which had already been disturbed or destroyed (Raftery 1960, 79-93). The excavation revealed that the barrow (diam. c. 13m; H c. 1m) consisted of a circular mound (H c. 0.6m) of brown sandy soil on top of which, slightly to N of centre, there was a cairn of stones. The cairn was defined by a U-shaped setting of kerb stones. Underlying the barrow were nine graves -five pits or possible pits and four cists -which were built on or dug into the underlying subsoil. In all, the pits and cists contained the cremated remains of thirteen, possibly fourteen individuals, two of which were children. It was not possible to determine the gender of the remains. Food vessel pots accompanied the cremations in five of the graves. The evidence suggested that all the burials had been deposited at the same time, and then covered by the mound barrow. The excavator interpreted the remains as a Bronze Age cemetery (Raftery 1960, 90) Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 May 2020 - MA040-042: Ringfort - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA040-042----. In a wooded area, with both deciduous and coniferous trees, located on a rise in an area of undulating terrain. There are good views, especially to E. This ringfort is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure, and on the 1922 edition as a walled circular enclosure, named ‘Greyfort’. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 20-22m) defined by a wall (Wth c. 1.3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.8m), which is engulfed in moss and overgrowth. It is unclear if the enclosing wall is a primary feature, or whether it was built in the modern era. There is a souterrain (MA040-042001) in the centre of the interior. Trees and brambles grow throughout the ringfort. Located in a ringfort (MA040-042). This souterrain is L-shaped in plan, consisting of an E−W passage, at the W end of which there is a chamber, which extends to S. In the centre of the ringfort interior there is a sunken area (1.8m E−W; 1.50m N−S), the W side of which incorporates a lintelled opening (Wth 0.99m; H 0.69m) to a passage (Wth 0.94m; H 0.88m) of dry-stone construction. The walls of the passage consist of two to three courses of large roughly rectangular stone blocks, with a slight corbelling at the top to support the massive roof lintels. The passage extends for 3.65m to W, ending in a short lintelled constriction (Wth 0.5m; H 0.6m), which drops abruptly at its W edge into the NE end of a chamber (3.4m N−S; 1.9m E-W; H 1.7m). The chamber is roughly oval in plan, with its floor at a depth of 0.7m below that of the passage. The N wall of the chamber is more or less on the same E−W line with the N wall of the passage, and the long axis of the chamber extends to S of the passage. The walls of the chamber are rock-cut from floor level to a height of 0.5-0.7m, above which they are of dry-stone construction, with a slight corbelling at top to support the massive roof lintels. Towards the S end of the E wall there is a recess (Wth 0.77m; H 0.7m) that extends into the wall to a depth of 0.7m, narrowing at the back to a width of 0.64m. A small, partly blocked, opening at the back of the recess may be an air vent. The floor in both the passage and the chamber is earth covered. There is a spread of loose stone at the W end of the passage and a heap of large stones at the S end of the chamber. Not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; shown on the 1922 edition as a circular hachured area (diam. c. 20m), overlain by two intersecting field boundaries. This enclosure is covered in dense overgrowth of hawthorn, blackthorn and gorse, and is difficult to examine. It appears to consist of a slightly raised circular area (diam. 15-20m) defined by a scarp (Wth slope c. 3m; ext. H 1.3m at W). A remnant of a NW−SE field fence, removed elsewhere in the field, clips the E side. Another ruined field fence extends on a roughly NE−SW axis through the centre of the enclosure. This cist was discovered in 1961 by the landowner while he was digging foundations for a concrete path. It was reported to the National Museum, and was subsequently excavated (Rynne 1962, 1). The excavation revealed a rectangular slab-lined grave (int. dim. 0.48m NW-SE; 0.3m NE-SW; D 0.5m) dug into sandy, gravelly soil. Each of the four sides was formed by a single upright slab, supported externally by piles of small packing stones. Small horizontally-laid support stones, resting on the side stones, supported six overlapping capstones. A deposit of cremated human bone lay on the natural gravel floor of the cist. There were no accompanying grave-goods. (Rynne 1962, 1; plate II). A house now overlies the location. An area (Wth c. 3m) of ramp-like slump in the scarp at SE may be the location of an original entrance. Grass cover, with some hawthorn and blackthorn bushes on the perimeter. Field clearance boulders have been piled along the top of the scarp on the S arc. In pasture, located on a rise with a fall of ground to W. This monument is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is depicted on the 1922 edition as a circular hachured enclosure (diam. c. 15m) beside which is written ‘David’s Fort’ and ‘Graves’. Aldridge (1969, 85) considered it 'an obvious cist burial mound', though he gives no corroborating details, and he recorded that it was ‘reputed to have been used for the burial of children’ (MA040-047001-). Raised flat-topped oval area (c. 16m NE−SW; c. 12.5m NW−SE) defined by a stony scarp. The scarp is most pronounced (H 0.9-1m) at NW where there is a natural drop in exterior ground level; field clearance stones are heaped against it at NE−E, it is evident as broadly slumped slope at SE−S, and a low rise (H 0.35m) at SW−W. Set c. 2-2.5m in from the top edge of the scarp, an arc of low stones protrudes from the level interior. This appears to be the footings of a stone wall, which can be traced in a curve E−NW, but peters out at N−NE; it may be related to the tradition of use as a children’s burial ground. It is enveloped in dense overgrowth, with piles of field clearance stones in interior and around perimeter. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 May 2020 - MA040-047001: Children's burial ground, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA040-047001-. In a possible burial mound (MA040-047----). ‘Graves’ is written on the 1922 OS 6-inch map adjacent to the possible burial mound, which is named ‘David’s Fort’. According to Aldridge (1969, 85) the possible prehistoric burial mound was locally ‘reputed to have been used for the burial of children’. No graves are now evident. In a pasture field adjacent to a farmyard, located on a low rise in an undulating landscape of low rounded hills and ridges. Views to E−SE are defined by the N−S spine of the Ox Mountains. Nephin Mountain rises prominently on the far horizon to SW. Ground rises gently for c. 65m to S to an elevation topped by a cairn (MA040-105----). A rath (MA040-046----) is visible on a low hill c. 380m to NNE. Massive upright slab (H 3m; Wth 1.05m N−S; T c. 0.3m E−W), with long axis aligned N−S, roughly rectangular in shape but tapering gently at the base, and tapering also in thickness to relatively narrow edges (T c. 0.1m) at the N and S ends, both of which bear ogham inscription. The top surface of the stone is stepped with the higher, flat-topped peak at the N end. The stone leans gently to E. Ogham inscription was previously recorded on both the N and S ends of the stone (SMR file, NMI Topographical Files 1938). The N end tapers to a relatively narrow edge (T 0.1m). The upper half is thickly obscured by lichen, and the ogham inscription cannot be seen. The lower half is relatively clear of lichen, and the edge is smooth and polished in parts, most likely as a result of farm stock using the stone as a scratching post. At a height of 0.8-1m above the base, a number of slight indentations or possible notches can be seen, which may be part of the ogham inscription. On the S end of the stone, the ogham inscription, weathered but clearly visible, extends from the top of the stone to a point c. 1.3m above ground, coinciding with the narrowest edge (T 0.5-0.1m) of this end of the stone. Below this point, the stone presents a somewhat broader, flatter face (T 0.2m), with a rough surface, on which ogham scores cannot be distinguished. A dense growth of lichen covers the upper third of the stone, with more moderate surface mottling elsewhere. Several rounded stones and small boulders protrude from the sod at the base of the stone, and a slight hollow encircles the base, eroded by farm stock. (Jane O’Shaughnessy, NMS field report) The exceptional size of the stone suggested to Macalister (1945, 9-10, no. 7) that it was originally a prehistoric standing stone, adapted by a later ogham carver for an inscription. Macalister (ibid) noted that the scores are rather broad and shallow, pocked and rubbed smooth, up on both edges and reading: --]MAQ CERAN[I] AVI ATHECETAIMIN. In pasture, straddling a rise in an area of undulating terrain. Broadly oval raised area or platform (21.4m E−W; 20-15m N−S) defined by a scarp. The scarp is lowest (H 0.4m) on the N−NE arc, and higher and steeper (H 1.8m; Wth slope 3.5m) on the S half where there is a natural fall of ground. The rath is boxed in by later field walls. The field walls lie close (within 1m) to the base of the enclosing scarp at E−SE and NW, but are 3-4m outside the scarp at S−SW, and form a polygonal outer ring around the rath. There is local tradition of a souterrain (MA040-049001-) associated with the rath. The rath perimeter is ringed with hawthorn and blackthorn, and there is a dense tangle of blackthorn and brambles throughout the interior. In pasture, located an area of gently undulating terrain, with good but not extensive views. This enclosure is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, but is shown on later editions as a D-shaped walled enclosure, with the straight side at SW. It is evident as a roughly D-shaped area (28.4m N−S; 25.4m E−W) defined by drystone stone walls (Wth 0.8-1m; H 0.8m). The wall on the straight side at SW is part of a NW−SE field wall, which extends beyond the enclosure. There is a gap (Wth 1.8m) at SE. The interior is not raised relative to exterior ground level, and slopes down slightly to E. The enclosing walls are similar in form and size to surrounding field walls, and merge with them. There is no convincing evidence that this is a rath or cashel; it may simply be a field enclosure of relatively recent date. Blackthorn, hazel and brambles ring the perimeter. In pasture, located on rising ground in hilly terrain. There is a spring-fed pool at the base of the slope c. 100m to NE, where there is a holy well (MA040-074) and a fulacht fia (MA040-103). Ballymore Lough is 150m to SW and Lough Caorhann and Cartron Loughs are 200m and 500m to ENE, respectively. There is an area of quarrying to S. This rath is named ‘Lisatrawbuie’ on the 1922 OS 6-inch map. It consists of a raised circular area or platform (33m N−S; 34.5m E−W) defined by an earthen bank/scarp, and enclosed by a fosse with an external bank of earth and stone. A short arc (L c. 5m) of the inner earthen bank (Wth c. 3m) appears to survive at S, but is largely concealed by overgrowth; elsewhere it is reduced to a scarp (H 1.6-1.8m), with stones protruding from the external face in parts. The fosse is a broad, shallow depression (Wth 4.3m at E, 5m at WSW) defined on its outer rim by the external bank (Wth 5.3m at WSW, c. 7m at E; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1.6m at WSW, 2.5m at NE). At S−SW the fosse changes in form to a narrow terrace (Wth 2-3m) and the external bank is reduced to a broad, steep scarp which merges with a later field wall. The location of the original entrance is uncertain. It may have been at NE where there is a gap (Wth 1.2m) in the scarp, now obscured by overgrowth, with a corresponding break in the outer bank, now blocked by a later field wall. There are narrow breaks eroded by farm stock at W and a low area in the external bank at NNW. The interior slopes gently down from centre to SE. In the NW quadrant there is a small, roughly circular hollow (diam. 1.6m; D 0.3m) with a slightly raised stony rim. The interior is grassy; the perimeter is ringed with hazel, blackthorn, brambles and gorse. In a natural, lowlying basin of damp, rush-grown ground bordered at NE−SW by the steeply rising slope of a ridge. This holy well is named on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps as ‘Tober Patrick’. It consists of a subcircular pool (diam. c. 10-12m; D c. 0.5m) fed by a natural spring. The pool has a mud base and is surrounded by willow scrub. The outflow extends to W and SW, partly flooding the ground for a distance of c. 25-30m SW of the pool. Horsetail plants grow in the pool, and more profusely in the overflow area. A post and wire fence encloses the pool and this adjacent wet area. A fulacht fia (MA040-103----) is located immediately to S of the well. A rath (MA040-070----) crowns a hillock c. 120m to WSW. In damp, rush-grown pasture, located immediately adjacent to a spring-fed pool, in a natural hollow of damp ground, bordered in a sheltering arc at NE−SW by the steeply rising slope of a ridge. This fulacht fia is evident as a roughly circular, well-defined, compact mound (15.7m E-W; 17m N-S; H 0.65m) composed of heat-shattered stone fragments in a matrix of black, peaty charcoal-rich soil. A shallow central hollow (2m E−W; 3.5-4m N−S) on the top of the mound opens to N facing the pool, and may indicate the location of a trough. A small semicircular depression (max. dim. c. 1m) evident on the SE side of the mound is likely to be the result of relatively recent disturbance. A field drain (Wth 1.2-1.6m; D 0.4-0.5m) cuts across the SE edge of the mound, and extends beyond it to NNE and to NW; burnt stone and charcoal fragments are visible in the section face in parts. The fulacht fia is distinguished by its covering of short, green mossy sod, amidst the surrounding rough grass and rushes. A post-and-wire fence, which borders the pool, clips the NW edge of the mound. The pool was used as a holy well (MA040-071----), known as Tober Patrick. A rath (MA040-070----) crowns a hillock c. 120m to WSW. In hilly pastureland, located on a rise overlooked by higher ground 40m to N. Nephin Mountain is visible on the far horizon to WSW. Two upright boulders set 1.44m apart, on a N-S axis. The S stone (H 1.6m; Wth 1.6m; L 1.6m; T 0.35m at top, 0.75m at base) is the largest and has a triangular profile. The N stone (H 1.05m; L c. 0.9m; T 0.45m at top, 0.6m at base) also narrows towards the top in a roughly triangular shape, but has a more rounded profile, and leans slightly to the E. There is an ogham stone (MA040-048----) and a mound (MA040-105----) 200m and 150m to NW, respectively. A rath (MA040-069----) is located 150m to SW. In undulating pasture, situated on a low rise. A low ridge blocks views to the E, but otherwise there are good views over the surrounding pastureland, with Nephin Mountain on the far horizon to WSW. Circular, flat-topped mound (8m E-W; 7.5m N-S; H 0.75m at W, 1.45m at E) of earth and stone, with the perimeter of the flat top defined by a slightly raised rim. Stone protrudes from the surface of the mound, some of which may be the result of field clearance. There is a shallow surface depression (diam. 2m) off centre to NW on top of the mound. Stones also protrude from the scarp, in parts resembling rough kerbing. The scarp to E is broadly slumped. The nature of this mound or cairn is uncertain. It is partly obscured by hawthorn, blackthorn and brambles, and it is difficult to determine if it is composed primarily of stone or earth. It has clearly been a focus for field clearance stones in recent years, but this may not be its primary function. An ogham stone (MA040-048----) is located c. 60m to N in the same field. In a pasture field which encompasses part of a flat valley of damp ground. A few meters to E of the mound the ground rises. Low, roughly kidney-shaped mound (15m NE−SW; 11m NW−SE; H 0.6m), with a shallow, poorly-defined, roughly U-shaped depression (2.5-3m NW−SE; 1m NE−SW) mid-way along the NW side, which may indicate the location of a trough. The mound is compact and marked by a growth of short, green grass. In parts, where the sod cover has eroded by farm stock, it is possible to see that the mound is composed of a concentration of stone fragments in dark soil.
