- MA080-033: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA080-033----. In rough heather- and rush-covered boggy upland pasture, located on a slight rise on a fairly level plateau. To E ground falls into a natural dip then rises sharply to the ridge summit. There are good views to S, W and N over the undulating uplands, with Croagh Patrick visible on the far horizon to SW and the Nephin Beg Range to NW. This small enclosure is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map but is not shown on later maps editions. Raised circular platform (18.5m E−W; 16m N−S) defined by a well preserved perimeter scarp (Wth slope 3m; ext. H 1.2m at E, 0.8m at W) which retains a slight internal lip. Outside the scarp, it is enclosed by a fosse (Wth 1.4-2m) evident as a very shallow depression marked by a growth of rushes. A slight slump (Wth c. 2m) in the scarp at E may indicate an entrance. When inspected in 1998, a narrow vertical hole (diam. 0.4m; D c. 1m) of uncertain significance was noted in the N half of the interior. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 December 2021

In rough upland pasture, on a mountain plateau with panoramic views S, W and N. Croagh Patrick looms in splendid isolation on the distant horizon to W, and the Nephin Beg Range defines the horizon at NNW. At NE ground rises to higher ridges. It is prominently sited on a low E-W spine of raised ground on the relatively level plateau. Inspected in 1998, this possible ring-barrow consists of a gently domed grass-covered mound (6m E−W; 6.7m N−S; H 0.9m at N & S, 0.4m at E; o.6m at W) apparently of earthen construction. There is a shallow depression/hollow (4m NW−SE; 3m NE-SW) adjacent to the mound at SW. An earlier report (NMI Topographical Files, undated) recorded this monument as follows: ‘Slightly damaged in spring in digging. It is c. 10m in diameter with a central low mound surrounded by a ditch and external bank.’ Another ring-barrow (MA080-043002-) is located 60m downslope to SW. In rough upland pasture, on a mountain plateau with panoramic views S, W and N. Croagh Patrick is visible on the distant horizon to W, and the Nephin Beg Range defines the horizon at NNW. At NE ground rises to higher ridges. Inspected in 1998, this possible ringbarrow is evident as a low, roughly circular platform (14.5m E-W; 12-13m N-S; H 0.5m) defined on the downslope S half by a low scarp. The scarp is indistinct on the N half where the platform is almost flush with exterior ground level. An earlier report (NMI Topographical Files, undated), recorded this monument as follows: ‘Measures 13m in diameter consisting of a low boat shaped mound and appears to have a stony core. There are slight traces of a surrounding ditch and bank.’ Another possible ringbarrow (MA080-043002-) is 60m upslope to NE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 3 December 2021

At the SE corner of a pasture field bordered at S by a road, in an area of undulating terrain overlooked at N by a high ridge. A rectangular tree-planted enclosure is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map but is not named as a burial ground; it is indicated on the 1919 edition as ‘Burial Ground’. A rectangular area (26.4m E−W; 24m N−S) enclosed on the E side by a drystone property wall, at S by a concrete wall, bordering the road, and to W and N by a low stony rise/wall footings. Several mature beech trees grow around the perimeter. Several low, upright uninscribed stone gravemarkers are evident in the interior, which is scattered throughout with loose stones. In the NW quadrant there is a circular grass-covered flat-topped rise or mound (10.8m E−W; 11m N−S; H 1.2m at W, 0.7m at E), with a lot of stones protruding from the sod and loosely scattered over its entire surface. A slight scarp defines the NE quadrant which is at a very slightly higher level than the rest of the interior. Here a rectangular graveslab lies on the surface. It is engraved with a cross within a decorative scalloped ring, with IHS beneath; a tiny heart is carved beneath the cross-bar of the H. The inscription indicates that it was erected by a father for his child, John Myles O’Donnell; the date appears to read 1857. According to local information, the burial ground is locally known as ‘Killeen’ and was used as a children’s burial ground; the names of the dead were often carved into the trees which grow around the perimeter, but these carvings are no longer visible.
