In average pasture, in an area of gently undulating terrain bordered to W by tracts of bog. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m), but not shown on later map editions. There is no visible trace at ground level. According to local information, a small circular rise (diam. c. 10-15m) at this location was levelled out during land reclamation works in the 1970’s or early 1980’s. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 31 July 2019 - MA038-068: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA038-068----. In pasture, located at the NNE end of a low ridge, with a slight fall of ground at E–SE. In an area of gently undulating terrain of mixed pasture and bog. There is a lake, Lough Nathim, bordered by tracts of bog, c. 230m to W. Raised circular area (29m N–S; 28.3m E–W) defined by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 4.6m at SW, 5m at NW; int. H 0.8m at SW, 0.5m at NW; ext. H 1.3m at SW, 2.2m at NW). The bank is composed of sandy soil and incorporates stones in parts. The NE–S arc of the bank has been adapted to serve as a property boundary: the inner and outer faces have been cut to the vertical and faced and topped with stones. At NNW–N a section of the external face, which is quite severely eroded, has been partly infilled with a heap of field clearance boulders. There is a shallow dip (Wth 4-4.5m) immediately outside the bank at SW, bordered externally by a slight rise in ground level. This may indicate a fosse, but it is not evident elsewhere around the circuit. In the interior a slight rise in ground level is evident in the W-SW quadrant, which may indicate the location of a souterrain (MA038-068001-). Remnants of a field bank traverse the interior on a NNE–SSW axis slightly E of centre. There is hawthorn and gorse on the bank, particularly dense at E, where it is incorporated into a field boundary. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 31 July 2019 - MA038-068001: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA038-068001-. In a rath (MA038-068). According to local tradition, there is a souterrain in the rath. A slight rise in ground level in the W half of the rath interior may indicate the location. 6th March 1996 Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 31 July 2019 - MA038-069: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA038-069----. In average pasture, utilises a prominent rise, which provides good views of the surrounding countryside. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 18-20m), and on the 1922 edition as an oval hachured feature (c. 18m N–S; c. 15m E–W), this monument has been severely damaged by quarrying, which has resulted in the destruction of the E half. The W half survives as a crescent-shaped, raised area (c. 15m NNE–SSW; c. 11m ESE–WNW) curving S–NNE, with a scarped indentation on the eastern, quarried side. A raised rim (Wth 4-4.3m; int. H 0.3-0.4m; ext. H 1.7m), representing the remnants of a bank, defines the W edge of the crescent. The whole is engulfed in brambles and gorse. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 31 July 2019 - MA038-070: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA038-070----. In rough-average pasture, located in gently undulating terrain bordered a few hundred meters to W by tracts of bog. There is a natural rise immediately to NW. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure and on the 1922 edition as a semi-circular area bordered on the straight side to NW by a field boundary, this rath survives as a D-shaped area (30.8m NE-SW; 20m NW–SE) defined on the curving side at NNE–SW by a bank (Wth 4.9m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 1.55m at E), and on the straight side to NW by a property fence on a NE–SW axis. The bank appears to be largely earthen but incorporates stones. It is best preserved at E, where it has a broad external slump. Stones protruding from the inner face may be remnants of a kerb. There are narrow eroded breaks at E (Wth 0.6m) and at W (Wth 1m). A broad band of wet boggy ground outside the bank may indicate the presence of a fosse. There is no trace at ground level of the W arc of the rath, to N of the field fence. In the W half of the interior there is a roughly circular, sod-covered stony rise (diam. c. 7.6m NE–SW; 7m NW–SE; H 0.5m at E), possibly a heap of field stones. Hawthorn and brambles grow on the perimeter. A possible enclosure (MA038-215----) is located c. 50m to N. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 31 July 2019 - MA038-071: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA038-071----. In pasture, located on elevated ground. There is a stream 30m downslope to S, which coincides with the S boundary of the townland. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 20m N-S) defined by a bank (Wth 2.8-3m; int H 0.2m; ext. H 0.7-1.8m) of earth and stone. The bank has a low stony internal rim, but the external slope is well defined, built up on the SW arc (Wth ext. slope 4.5m; ext. H 1.8m) to compensate for the natural slope and create a level interior. At NNE-SE it is incorporated into/or adapted to serve as a field boundary, maintaining the curve of the rath. There is an area of surface erosion/disturbed ground on the perimeter at SE. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 31 July 2019 - MA038-072: Megalithic tomb - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA038-072----. In an area of level pasture, with rising ground to W. There is a lake, named Lough Agawna on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps, 120m to SE. This megalithic structure is not indicated on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a low, oblong mound (6m E-W; 4m N-S; H 1m) of earth and stone, with four large boulders on its perimeter. The E end is faced with a single, large upright boulder (L 2m N-S; T 0.6-0.7m; H 0.6m), extending almost the full width of this short side. Another large upright boulder (L 1.6m E-W; T 0.8-0.9m; H 1.35m) is located 1.25m E of this, roughly mid-way along the long S side of the mound. A third upright boulder (L 1.5m E-W; T 0.65m; H 1.35m) stands against the N face of the mound, more or less in line and parallel with the boulder on the S side. A large prostrate stone (max. dim.1.2m; T 0.3m) overlies the sloping W edge of the mound. The mound is irregular in shape, narrowing somewhat at the E end, with an uneven, undulating top, and has a dilapidated appearance. An accumulation of small stones on the top appear to be the result of field clearance activities. A hawthorn and an ash tree grow from the edge of the N side towards its W end. The mound incorporates field clearance stones on its upper surface, but it is unclear, whether its core is primarily composed of earth or stone, and whether the upright boulders are set in the ground or merely pushed against the mound. In pasture, located against a slight SE–facing slope, in gently undulating terrain bordered c. 150m to W by tracts of bog, now largely forested. There is a rath (MA038-070----) c. 50m to S, and another rath (MA038-068----) c. 130m to N. This enclosure is not indicated on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It consist of a semicircular platform (16m NE–SW; 8.5m NW–SW to field fence) defined NNE–SW by a stony scarp (H 0.7m), and on the straight side to NW by a field boundary on a NE–SW axis. The scarp, which is degraded and slumped, is edged and topped with stones. The remains may represent the SW half of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20-25m), the NW half of which, to N of the field fence, has been levelled. To NW of the fence, more or less in line with the scarp at W, a linear heap or rough bank (Wth c. 4m; H 1m) of earth and stones extends for 10m to NW, with a slight curve to N. It has a rough jumbled appearance, suggestive of field clearance, but may be remnants of a bank or wall that defined the NW half the enclosure. A slight rise in ground level is also evident to NW of the boundary fence. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
