In pasture/silage, located on a rise, on top of a ridge, with extensive views N-E over lowlying coastal grasslands, and beyond to Rathlacken Bay and Killala Bay. To S–SW the land rises to another ridge. This rath, named ‘Mullaghorn Fort’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps, is shown on the 1838 edition as a circular enclosure, and on the 1922 edition as a penannular enclosure truncated on the E edge by a quarry. The 1838 OS Letters record that the name is derived from the Irish name ‘Mullach Chairnn, that is the Height or Hill of the Carn’ and describes the enclosure as follows: ‘This is built like an earthen fort (lios) and has round stones of very great size placed circularly on its border, where the parapet of the fort would occupy. The diameter within this circle of large stones, which are placed very contiguous (not closely) to one another is twenty six yards = seventy eight paces and around the circle immediately outside measures eighty paces = two hundred and forty two feet.’ (O’Flanagan, 1927, 137) It survives as a slightly raised, semi-circular area (29.7m NW–SE; 17.6m NE–SW to quarry face) defined SE–NW by remnants of a bank consisting of a low scarp (ext. H 0.4m) topped with a broad, low internal lip (Wth c. 4m). There is no trace of the circle of large stones mentioned in the OS Letters. The straight side of the enclosure at NNE-E is formed by a quarry pit which has truncated approximately a third of the enclosure. The quarry pit is dug to a depth of c. 2m below level of the rath interior, and extends for c. 45-50m to NNE and E of the enclosure, with the deepest part to NNE-NE. In pasture, located on a low knoll, which provides good views in all directions, especially over the SW shoreline of Killala Bay, which is c. 100m W, with the Ross peninsula visible to NE and Bartra Island dominating the view to E−SE. To NW there is an expanse of lowlying wet pasture. This rath is named ‘Rathmore’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch map. It consists of a slightly raised, circular area (18m E–W; 16.8m N–S) defined by a bank (Wth 2.1m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.85m, at SE). Stones protrude from the top and inner face of the bank. The bank appears to be reduced to a scarp At N–NW, but this area is covered in overgrowth and difficult to examine. There is a break (Wth 1m) in the bank at SE and another (Wth c. 3m) at S. The interior appears to be somewhat higher at NW–N, and a slight slope down to S is apparent in the E half. Remnants of a field fence skirt the rath SE–SW, and another defunct field fence abuts the bank at NE. The contours of the knoll appear to be scarped to N-NE of the rath. The E half of the rath is grass-covered but dense overgrowth (gorse, brambles) obscure the W half, impeding examination. There is a rath (MA015-051----) located c. 100m to SE and another (MA015-052----) c. 100m to SSW. Two other raths (MA015-053----; MA015-054----) are visible c. 400m to SE. In pasture, at the SE end of a NW–SE rise in gently undulating coastal terrain, with good views in all directions. A small inlet in the SW shoreline of Killala Bay is 50m to E. Raised oval area (22.4m ESE–WNW; 16.8m NNE–SSW) defined by a scarp (Wth slope 2.8m; H 1.3m at N). The scarp is well defined at SW–ESE, and for short stretches at ESE and WSW it retains a low internal rim (Wth c. 1m; int. H 0.1-0.3m). At WSW a few stones protrude from the inner edge of the raised rim of the scarp. At N large stones also protrude about mid-way down the external slope of the scarp. The scarp has been modified and incorporated into a later field fence at SE–SW; it is topped with stones and a hedge of thorn bushes and brambles. The interior is flat and featureless, with overgrowth encroaching on the S half. There is a rath (MA015-050----) c. 100m to NW, and another (MA015-052----) is 100m to SSW. Two other raths (MA015-053----; MA015-054----) are visible c. 300m to SSE. In pasture, located on a rise, in gently undulating coastal terrain, overlooking an inlet in Killala Bay c. 150m to E. This rath is named ‘Rathbeg’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch map. It consists of a raised, roughly circular area (21m NW–SE; 20.5m NE–SW) defined at NE–E by remnants of a broadly slumped bank (Wth 5.6m; int. H 0.3m; ext. 1.45m) and elsewhere by an earthen scarp (H 1.2m at S; 0.5m at W), which is almost vertical and faced with stone at S–SW, and at W-N is very low and degraded. There is low section/break (Wth c. 3m) at S, but is unclear if this represents an original entrance. A field fence/property boundary, on NE–SW axis, bisects the interior to W of centre. Appended to the S–SW end of the rath is a semi-circular terrace (17m NW–SE; 12.6m NE–SW), which is at a level c. 1m lower than the rath interior. It is defined at E–SW by a scarp, and is bordered at W by the field fence that bisects the rath. There is a rath (MA015-050----) 130m to NNE and another rath (MA015-051----) 100m to ENE. Two other raths (MA015-053----; MA015-054----) are visible c. 300m to SE. In pasture, located on a low rise c. 40m from the shore, on a small headland projecting into the SW side of Killala Bay. The headland becomes an island at high tide when the narrow neck of wet ground connecting it to the mainland is submerged. Good views in all directions. This consists of the poorly preserved outline of a slightly raised, roughly oval area (c. 21m NE–SW; c. 25-28m NW–SE). It is defined at NW−S by a degraded scarp (Wth slope 4.2m; H 1.3m at N), and is truncated at SW–W by a later field fence on a NW–SE axis. There is a possible rectangular house (MA015-054001-) in the S half of the interior. Another rath (MA015-054----) is located 60m to E on the same headland. A cluster of three raths (MA015-050----; MA015-051----; MA015-052----) is located 300m to NW–N. In the S half of a rath (MA015-054----). The poorly preserved outline of a rectangular structure (c. 14-15m N–S; c. 6.5m E–W) is defined by a low, sod-covered stony bank/wall footings (Wth 1.2-1.5m; H 0.25-0.35m). A low stony bank partitions the structure into two ‘rooms’ of roughly equal size; the interior of the E room is at a slightly lower level than that of the W room. In pasture, encompasses the flat top of an oval knoll (H c. 3m), located c. 10m from the shore on a small headland projecting into the SW side of Killala Bay. The headland becomes an island at high tide when the narrow neck of wet ground connecting it to the mainland is submerged. The location provides widespread view over the bay NE−SE, and of the surrounding undulating coastal pastureland SW−N. A roughly oval area (17m NW–SE; 13.6m NE–SW) defined by the low remnants of a bank (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.4m) at NW–N, reduced elsewhere to an earthen scarp. The scarp is well defined at S-NW, but is quite degraded at NNE-SE, with much stone randomly protruding from it. The entrance may have been at NNE where there is a low area in the bank, facing the most gently sloping side of the knoll. The interior has a slight slope down from centre to NE; it is grassy and featureless. There is another rath (MA015-053----) located 60m to W on the same headland. A cluster of three other raths (MA015-050----; MA015-051----; MA015-052----) is located c. 300m to NW–N.
