In rolling pasture, located on a low hillock, with excellent views in all directions. Raised oval area (16m NNE–SSW; 11m WNW–ESE) defined by an irregular sod-covered scarp (H 1m at E, 1.2m at W) from which stones protrude in parts. Sections of the scarp at NE and SW are degraded. The E half of the level interior there a sub-rectangular concentration (c. 6m N–S; 1.2m E–W) of stones protrudes from the sod, including at least six low stones that appear to be set upright. A single upright stone is also visible in the S of the interior. The stones do not form any clear structural pattern, and their significance is unclear. A property wall on a WNW–ESE axis cuts across the S–SW edge of the enclosure. Hawthorn bushes grow around the perimeter. There is a small quarry pit (max. dim. c. 8m; D 0.4m) 14m to NW. A rath (MA073-009----) is located 170m to NE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 June 2021 - MA073-009: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-009----. In average pasture, broken by rock outcropping, located on a low hill with good views. Ground falls towards a stream/drain c. 50m to N. Broadly oval slightly raised area (24m NW–SE; 28.5m) defined by a scarp (H 1m at NNE; 0.35m at S) incorporating stones. The scarp is well defined on the NE arc, but is lower and partly obscured by brambles on the SW arc. There is break/low area (Wth 6m) in the scarp at SE. The interior, which is crossed centrally by a field wall on a NW–SE axis, is level, with a slight dip in the SE quadrant. A bramble-covered stony rise at the base of a large tree stump, in the NW quadrant is a probably a field clearance heap. There is a similar stony heap at the base of a hawthorn tree in the S half of the interior. An enclosure (MA073-008----) is located on a hillock 170m to SW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 June 2021 - MA073-025: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-025----. Located in pasture, with ground rising to a woodland-covered ridge at S and falling towards a stream/drain c. 80m at N, beyond which is an expanse of flat, drained pasture. An oval enclosure (max. dim. c. 15-20m NW–SE) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. At this location there is a low hillock or rise, with a flattish top (c. 15m E−W; c. 9m N−S) and a broad N-facing slope. No trace of an enclosure is evident. Remnants of a field wall cross the S side of the hillock, and a beech tree grows on the W edge. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 June 2021 - MA073-026: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-026----. In pasture, located on the N side of a rise, with good views. The N side of the field is bordered by an expanse of deciduous woodland. Raised circular area (32m N–S; 32m E–W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 6.3m at NNW, 6.8m at S; int. H 0.9m at NNW, 1.45m at S; ext. H 2.55-3m at NNW, 2m at S). Stones protrude randomly in parts on the inner face of the bank. An arc of hachuring is shown on the 1919 OS 6-inch map outside the bank at E–SE, possibly indicating a fosse and/or outer bank; no corresponding feature is now evident at ground level. However, a slight depression, emphasised by naturally rising ground on its outer edge, is evident outside the bank at NW, which may indicate the presence of a fosse. A gap (Wth c. 2m) in the bank at ENE appears to be the location of an original entrance. There is a slightly raised area in the NW quadrant of the otherwise level interior. Close to the inner face of the bank at N there is a shallow rectangular hollow (2m E–W; 1m N–S; D 0.1m) of unknown function; it does not appear to be the remains of a souterrain. The bank is ringed with oak, hazel, birch and hawthorn trees. The interior is grassy, with a few small hazel and hawthorn trees. A N–S field fence which lay immediately to E of the rath has been removed. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 June 2021 - MA073-027: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-027----. In pasture, spanning the width of a narrow rectangular modern field, located at the break of slope on the NE-facing side of a NW–SE ridge, providing extensive views N–NE towards a stream/drain located 180m to NE. Slightly raised, broadly oval area (28.4m N–S; 34.6m E-W) defined by a levelled bank/scarp. The scarp remains relatively well defined at W–ESE, except for a short section at N-NNE which is partly dug away. It is barely discernible or absent along a stretch (L 11m) at SE−S, and this may have been the location of an original entrance. The scarp is reduced to a low, grass-covered rise or undulation at SSW–W, with a particularly low section (L 8m) at WSW. The interior has a slight slope from centre down to NE, and according to local information, has a souterrain (MA073-027001-). Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 June 2021 - MA073-027001: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-027001-. In a rath (MA073-027----). According to local information, there is a ‘cave’/souterrain in the interior of the rath. It was blocked up in the past and its exact location is now unknown. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 June 2021 - MA073-038: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-038----. Located in a slight dip or hollow on elevated rough, stony pasture. Not indicated on the 1838 and 1919 OS 6-inch maps. Included on RMP (1997) as 'earthwork' on the basis of an aerial photograph (SMR file: GSI M 681 -0; Roll 218, pr. 5). It consists of a roughly square, stone-built structure (max. dim. 9-10m). The enclosing wall is largely collapsed to a jumble (Wth c. 3m) of small and medium-sized stones but short sections of drystone masonry remain in situ at NE (H 1.55m), NW and S (H 1.75m), preserving the N and S angles of the structure. There is a break (Wth 2.9m) where the E angle should be, and the W angle has also collapsed. The interior is obscured by dense overgrowth of ferns, brambles and blackthorn. It appears to be of relatively recent date; its original function is unclear, possibly an animal shelter. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 July 2015 - MA073-049: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-049----. Located in rolling pasture, with a gradual fall of ground to E–SE towards an expanse of heather-covered bog. There is an area of woodland c. 100m to S. This rath is not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a slightly raised circular area (24m N–S; 26.5m E–W) defined at N–E by a sod-covered stony bank (Wth 3.5-4m, int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.65m), at ESE–S by a scarp (H 1.4m) with a slightly raised internal rim and at S–N by a scarp (H 1.2m) incorporated at W–NW into a linear field wall. There is a break or slump (Wth 2.5m) in the scarp at E which may be an original entrance. The interior is fairly level; in the W half, there is a slight roughly circular rise (diam. c. 10m) with a slope down to SW towards the rath scarp. The rath interior is grass cover, with a few hawthorn trees around the perimeter. Immediately outside the rath, to W of the field wall, is a sub-circular shallow depression (diam. c. 10m), possibly a quarry pit. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
