- MA072-058: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA072-058----. In pasture, located on a hill, which provides excellent views. Raised circular area (diam. c. 35m) defined by a scarp (ext. H 1.8m, at N), which is enhanced by the natural hill slope, especially at SE−S. The scarp retains a low internal lip at W−NE and is topped by a drystone field wall at S−W. A portion of the scarp at NE has been dug away. Remnants of a trackway, flanked by field walls, skirts the base of the scarp at NW−NE; it lead E to a vernacular farmstead, now ruined, which is shown on the1838 OS 6-inch map. The interior appears to have a slight slope down from centre to N. It was covered in an impenetrable thicket of blackthorn at the time of inspection in 1997. In pasture, located on top of a ridge at the W end, with a steep fall of ground to N and E and a more gradual undulating slope at S. Roughly circular (diam. c. 25m) earthen platform defined by a scarp (H 1-1.2m at NW), which is incorporated into later field fences at N and S, and skirted by a farm trackway at W. In a dense thicket of blackthorn and brambles, located on a hill. This enclosure is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch maps as a D-shaped embanked enclosure (c. 35m E−W; c. 20m N−S) bordered on the straight side to S by a road, probably representing the N half of an originally circular enclosure, the S half of which was truncated by the road. It is not shown on later map editions. The location of the enclosure is at least partly encompassed within a sub-rectangular field (c. 30m N–S; c. 25m E−W) enclosed by a stone field fence; this field is engulfed in impenetrable overgrowth and could not be inspected examined. In rough pasture, located on a rise, overlooked by a higher hill at ESE. There is a ruined vernacular cottage immediately to N, and the surrounding farmland is largely under forestry. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure (diam. 15-20m); not shown on later map editions. A slightly raised area (max. dim. c. 24m) defined at W–N by a curving, apparently natural slope (H c. 3m at N) and bordered to E and S by field fences may indicated the location of the enclosure, but no enclosing bank/scarp is evident. In an expanse of rough, heather-covered bog, strewn with boulders and broken by rock-outcropping, located at the top of broad, relatively flat-topped knoll or rise, with extensive views in all directions. Three lakes, Lough Nambrackkeagh, Middle Lough and Crocknacloy Lough are located within a few hundred meters to NW, W and S respectively. The far horizon is defined at NW by the Nephin Mountain and the Nephin Beg Range and at NE by the Ox Mountains. This stone pair consists of a large upright earth-fast boulder (L 1.3m NNE−SSW; Wth 0.8m; H 1.3m) with a sloping top which rises gently from NNE to SSW, and a prostrate stone (L 2.25m E−W; Wth c. 1.3m; T 0.3m) which is located 1.2m to N, with its long axis perpendicular to that of the upright stone. The S side of the prostrate stone is partly embedded in the ground; the higher N side appears to rest on a few small horizontal stones, creating a small space (H 0.35m) beneath the stone.
