In level, lowlying pasture; views are quite good to NW−NE, but in general are not extensive. A roughly circular enclosure (diam. 45-50m) is shown on 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. The remains consist of an oblong earthen platform (48m NNW-SSE; 45m ENE-WSW) defined by a broadly sloping scarp (Wth slope 2.6m, H 0.4m at W; Wth slope 4m, H 0.65m at E) which retains a slightly raised internal lip at SE and S. The N arc of the scarp (H 0.3m) has been levelled to a low broadly sloping rise/undulation. Outside the scarp, an infilled fosse (W 2.5-3m) is evident as a shallow surface depression. At E the scarp has a pronounced slump extending over the fosse. This may be the remnants of an entrance causeway (W c. 4m). The scarp at NW−E is distinctly curvilinear in plan, but the S end of the E side, the S side and the S end of the W side are linear, with rounded corners at SE and SW. The straight sides raise the possibility that this is the remains of a moated site. However, the N end of the enclosure is clearly curvilinear and the enclosure is depicted as circular on the 1838 map, suggesting that it is a rath, which was modified and partly levelled in the past. A field fence/ property boundary traverses the NW end of the site on an ENE-WSW axis. In lowlying, damp pasture; good views. The 1915 OS 6-inch map shows an arc (diam. c. 20m) of hachuring curving S−NE, possibly the W half of an originally circular enclosure, with a linear rock feature extending for 65m to W from its S end; it is not shown on earlier map editions. At ground level there is no visible trace of any feature corresponding to the hachured arc. The E−W linear rock feature consists of a raised seam/ridge of limestone bedrock, with evidence of extensive past quarrying along its length resulting in very uneven ground, mounds and hollows and exposed vertical and horizontal planes of limestone. Remnants of a field boundary –part earthen, part stone walling – extends E−W along the top of the bedrock seam. Traces of at least three perpendicular field boundaries extend to S from this. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 23 June 2023 - MA119-044: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA119-044----. In level pasture, on a NW-SE ridge, with good views over Carras Lough to E. Depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure, and on the 1915 edition as a penannular embanked enclosure, open to E and crossed centrally on a NE-SW axis by a field boundary. This enclosure (diam. 42m) was levelled during land reclamation work in the late 1990’s. A slightly sunken farm track, flanked by field fences, crosses it centrally on a NE-SW axis. When inspected in 2000, the outline of the levelled bank was apparent as a circular cropmark in the fields on either side of the trackway. Part of the levelled bank on the SW arc is visible as a rise in the floor of the trackway. The rise (Wth c. 12m; H 0.7m) spans the width of the track. In line with it, a portion of the bank (W c. 5m NE−SW; H 1.2m) is preserved in section in the field fence on the N side of the track. Another rise (H 1m; Wth slope 7m) at the NE end of the trackway, where it intersects with a tarred road, is less clearly defined but probably also represents a portion of the NE arc of the levelled bank. There is a possible enclosure (MA119-073----) c. 15m to NNW.
