In gently rolling pasture, overlooking the Deel River which lies 100m to W. This house, named ‘Castle Gore’ on the 1930 OS 6-inch map, was built c. 1790 on the Deel Castle estate by James Cuff, who became the first Baron Tirawley, and was a relative of the Gore family through his mother Elizabeth, sister of Arthur Gore, 1st Earl of Arran. The house was built close to the traditional Gore residence at Deel Castle, a tower house (MA030-064001-) and later fortified house (MA030-064002-) located 250m to SW. Following the Williamite War the estate had passed from the Bourkes to the Gores, who leased it to the Cuffs. James Cuff, Baron Tirawley had no legitimate son, and the house was left to his illegitimate son, Colonel James Cuff. Following the latter's death in 1828 ownership of the house reverted to the Gore family. Castle Gore is described in Bence-Jones (1988, 69-70) as follows: ‘a typical late C18 block of 3 storeys over basement. 3 bay entrance front; tripartite doorway with engaged Tuscan columns and pediment extending over door and sidelights. Plain 5 bay garden front. Hall with frieze of delicate late-Georgian plasterwork. Long and narrow staircase hall at back of main hall, lit by a tall round-headed window; also with plasterwork frieze. Drawing room with niches on either side of fireplace. Low service wing; office-court with stone arcade for coaches; barrel-vaulted underground service tunnel, passing beneath the formal garden.’ The house was severely damaged and the original staircase destroyed during the 1798 Rebellion, and in 1922 it was burnt and not rebuilt (ibid. 69). The roofless shell of the building remains. A full architectural description and appraisal (reg. no. 3130300) by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage is also available (blue dot). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage)

- Castle Gore, country house, 1785–1795, Regional interest, registry number 31303006, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=MA&regno=31303006. Detached three-bay (three-bay deep) three-storey over basement country house, built 1789-92, on a symmetrical plan with five-bay full-height rear (west) elevation. Damaged, 1798. Occupied, 1911. Burnt, 1922. In ruins [complete], 1942. In ruins [partial], 1978. Roof now missing with remains of paired limestone ashlar central chimney stacks having corbelled stepped capping supporting yellow terracotta octagonal pots, and no rainwater goods surviving on ivy-covered dragged cut-limestone stepped cornice retaining cast-iron downpipes. Creeper- or ivy-covered fine roughcast walls on benchmark-inscribed dragged cut-limestone chamfered cushion course on rendered plinth. Square-headed central door opening in tripartite arrangement with steps now missing, cut-granite doorcase with engaged Tuscan columns on stepped plinths supporting "Cyma Recta" or "Cyma Reversa" pediment on blind frieze centred on dragged cut-limestone panel. Square-headed window openings (basement) with drag edged dragged cut-limestone sills, and concealed drag edged tooled cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds with no fittings surviving. Square-headed window openings (remainder) with drag edged dragged cut-limestone sills, and concealed red brick block-and-start surrounds with no fittings surviving. Interior in ruins including (ground floor): central entrance hall retaining decorative plasterwork cornice to ceiling on foliate- or vine-detailed frieze. Set in unkempt grounds.

Walled garden, extant 1838, on a trapezoidal plan with creeper- or ivy-covered coursed rubble limestone boundary wall to perimeter having overgrown coping centred on segmental-headed opposing gateways. Now disused. Set in unkempt grounds shared with Castle Gore.
- Castle Gore, icehouse, 1700–1838, Regional interest, registry number 31303008, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=MA&regno=31303008. Freestanding single-bay single-stage icehouse, extant 1838, on a circular plan with single-bay full-height lean-to breakfront. Now disused. Roof now missing. Part ivy-covered rendered coursed rubble limestone walls on battered base. Square-headed door opening with concealed red brick soldier course voussoirs on shallow lintel framing remains of timber fitting. Set in unkempt grounds shared with Castle Gore.

Five-arch road bridge over river, extant 1838. Part creeper- or ivy-covered walls centred on tooled limestone ashlar triangular cutwaters to piers to upriver (south) elevation on mass-concrete battered bases having lichen-covered pyramidal capping with stone-encrusted rendered rounded coping to parapets. Series of five segmental arches with drag edged tooled limestone ashlar voussoirs. Set in unkempt grounds shared with Castle Gore spanning Deel River with grass banks to river.
