In rough pasture, located in a strip of lowlying pastureland, 200m E of the coastline, with easily accessible beaches 200m to SE and 500m to N. Slightly raised circular area (10.4m N–S; 8m E–W) defined by a low, degraded earth and stone bank (Wth c. 2.5m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H c. 0.7m). Stones of various sizes protrude randomly from the bank. The inner face of the bank is poorly defined, barely rising above interior ground level, and the external face is slumped. There is a NNE–SSW field fence immediately to E of the enclosure, and a there is a house, garden and associated outbuildings immediately to N. - Gowlaun Catholic Chapel, church/chapel, 1829–1838, Regional interest, registry number 31310501, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=MA&regno=31310501. Detached two-bay single-storey Catholic chapel, extant 1838, on a T-shaped plan originally thatched comprising single-bay single-storey nave opening into single-bay (single-bay deep) single-storey transepts centred on chancel to crossing (east) with single-bay three-stage tower (south) on a square plan. "Improved", 1871-2, producing present composition. Dismantled, 1896-7. Disused, 1901. In ruins, 1915. Roof now missing, coping to gables now missing retaining drag edged tooled cut-limestone monolithic kneelers, and no rainwater goods surviving on squared limestone eaves. Coursed rubble stone battered walls retaining fine roughcast surface finish. Pointed-arch window openings with no fittings surviving. Paired lancet window openings to crossing (east) with no fittings surviving. Interior in ruins. Set in unkempt grounds on a slightly elevated site.
