- MA038-108: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA038-108----. On slight rise, which provides extensive views over the surrounding lowlying, reclaimed grassland, and expanses of rough heather-covered pasture and bog. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 25m) enclosed by a stone bank. The stone bank survives W–ENE as a sod-covered, stony rise with a low internal lip (W 3m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.9m). Elsewhere it has an internal face of vertical dry-stone walling (H 1m) with a broad stony external slump (W 3m; H 0.95m). The nature of the original enclosing element is unclear –the stone bank appears to be the result of relatively recent modification of the rath, and its incorporation into later field walls. A field wall, reduced now to wall footings, bisect the interior roughly centrally on an ENE-WSW axis. The rath is densely ringed with blackthorn and brambles. On a slight rise in average grassland, with an expanse of rough heathery pasture immediately to SW-W. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 36.5m N-S) defined a scarp/bank. At NE–SW the scarp (W of slope 1.7m; H 1.3m at NE; 1.5m at SE) has a relatively vertical external face, which exhibits remnants of stone facing, suggesting it has been modified to serve as a field fence. At SW-W a short length of bank (W 2.7m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.1m) survives; it has been levelled to a slight undulation at W-NNE. A property wall, on a NNE-SSW axis, bisects the interior to E of centre. Another field wall, reduced now to a low stony rise, extends E-W through the W half of the interior, intersecting at its E end with the NNE-SSW wall. In the E half of the interior there is a low stony bank (W 2.6m; H 0.4m; L 8m) forming a shallow arc E–NW. The rath perimeter is ringed with overgrowth at N-W. In undulating average pasture, overlooking an area of rough wettish land to W. The location is in the NW corner of a modern rectangular field, bordered by a road at W. This monument is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular ringfort-sized enclosure (diam. c. 20m); it is not shown on later map editions. There is no visible trace at ground level. According to local tradition, there was a burial site at or close to this location, possibly (MA038-142----). There is a rath (MA038-111----) 200m to NE. In average pasture, utilising a knoll, which provides good views of the surrounding undulating terrain. This rath is not named on the OS 6-inch maps, but is known locally as ‘Rathkell’. It consists of a raised circular area (28m N–S; 29m E–W) defined by a substantial earthen bank, which is enhanced by the slope of the knoll, and is enclosed at the base of that slope by a fosse and external bank. The inner bank (Wth 8.5m; int. H 1.7m; ext. H 4.25m at S) has remnants of stone facing in parts. The external slope, is several meters high at N and S where it merges with the natural slope of the knoll. It is lowest at E where it cuts across a natural level terrace on the knoll top. The fosse (Wth 3.6m at S, 3m at N) and external bank (Wth 2.5-3m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H 0.4-0.8m at S) are well defined, except at N where the external bank has been reduced in size, and faced with stones as a result of incorporation into a later field fence, and at E where a later linear N–S field fence truncates the outer bank and overlies the fosse. At S–SE the external bank is evident as a low rise of earth and stone, and here it appears relatively insubstantial in comparison to it appearance at W where it is scarped into the natural knoll slope and is significantly broader (Wth c. 6m). A section of the outer slope of external bank has been quarried into at SW. The original entrance was at E, opening onto the more gradually sloping side of the knoll; it consists now of a poorly defined gap (Wth c. 2m) in the inner bank. The rath interior is level. In the NW quadrant, adjacent to the bank, there is a sub-rectangular depression with a raised rim of earth and stone along the S side, and a very shallow linear hollow (Wth 1.6m) extends from close to the rath bank at E for 4.5m to N into the interior. The rath is engulfed in a dense thicket of hazel and blackthorn. There is an enclosure (MA038-110----) c. 200m to SW. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 9 August 2019
