- MA031-046: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA031-046----. In an area of undulating average pasture, located on a rise, which provides excellent views, restricted now to E by a farmstead. There is a spring well c. 100m to NW. Roughly circular, raised area (diam. 31.6m NW-SE) defined at SE−WNW by an earthen bank (W 2.4m; ext. H 0.7m) with a low internal lip, and at NW-NE by a substantial scarp (H 2m). The bank is truncated at E by N−S field wall, and the scarp has been modified or truncated at N by a later E−W field fence, which borders a road. A section of the scarp (H 1.5) at NW was recut during construction of a farm track. The interior is level. There is a local tradition that there is a souterrain (MA031-046001-) in the E half. A roughly D-shaped terrace (14.5m NW-SE; 10.7m NE-SW), defined by a scarp (H 0.6m) with a low internal lip, abuts the SW side of the rath, and is at a slightly lower level to it. In average pasture, on the narrow top of a N–S ridge, with extensive views in all directions of the surrounding sharply undulating terrain of mixed pasture and bog. There is a stream c. 100m to E, beyond which there are large expanses of bog, with the Ox Mountains defining the far horizon. Not shown on the 1837-8 OS 6-inch map, but shown as ‘Standing stone’ on the 1922 edition. Upright slab (H 1.5m; Wth 2m; T 0.35m), long axis NNE-SSW, is broader than it is tall. The stone is thickest at mid height, tapering from there towards a narrow top, and also narrowing towards the base. It leans slightly to E. There is a mound (MA031-063001-) located 1.4m to W. In average pasture, on the narrow top of a N–S ridge, with extensive views in all directions of the surrounding sharply undulating terrain of mixed pasture and bog. There is a stream c. 100m to E, beyond which there are expanses of bog, with the Ox Mountains defining the far horizon. A sod-covered mound (5.3m N–S; 6.7m E-W; H 1.3m) of earth and stone, roughly oblong in plan, with a flat top. The W end of the mound is rounded or curving; the E end is poorly defined and broadly slumped. An upright slab (H 0.8m; Wth 0.9m; T 0.2m) tapering to a narrow point at top, with long axis E-W, is set deeply in the flat top of the mound. A denuded section of the mound on N side revealed a basal layer (D 0.3m) of orange, sandy silt with some small stones, above which the mound is composed of grey-brown, stony soil. A large boulder is incorporated into the N side of the mound, and a hawthorn bush grows from the base of the slope. A field wall on an E-W axis lies immediately to N.
