In pasture, located on a slow rise at a bend in a stream; the course of the stream passes close to the S side of the rath and then loops around to W and N. Views are good, but somewhat restricted by surrounding rising ground. Raised circular area or platform (diam. c. 20m) defined by a scarp (Wth ext. slope 3.6m H 1.5m at S). The scarp retains a slightly raised internal lip in parts at S and N, and has a noticeably stony top –some of the stone may be the result of field clearance. There is no clearly defined entrance, but it may have been on the E side where the enclosing scarp is lowest, and faces a low rise immediately outside the rath, which forms a natural causeway-like feature. The interior is level, with a dip or shallow hollow (c. 4m across) in the SE quadrant. A bullaun stone (MA040-058001-) is located beneath a hawthorn tree in the SE of the interior. Accumulations of field clearance boulders are scattered along the E−SE edge of the interior. The rath is partly covered in ferns and overgrowth, with several conifers trees planted in the interior. Located in the SE quadrant of rath (MA040-058----), beneath a hawthorn tree. A roughly square block of stone (0.55m x 0.5m; H 0.24m) with a central subcircular hollow (diam. c. 0.28m; D 0.15m). In pasture, in gently undulating terrain, with a stream 150m to S. A circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 20m), slightly truncated on its S edge by an E−W field boundary, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; by the time of the 1922 edition it is depicted as a semicircular hachured area (diam. c. 20m N−S) curving SSW−N, and incorporated at N into an E-W field boundary. The remains consist of a curving stone bank/scarp (Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.5m) composed of a jumble of stones and boulders, partly sod-covered, and largely obscured by blackthorn and hazel scrub. The stone bank describes a shallow arc (diam. c. 20m N−S) SSW−NNE, coinciding at W with a natural fall of ground. At NNW−NNE it is incorporated into an E−W field wall, which appears to retain its curve. The E half of the enclosure has been levelled, and there is no trace of its outline at ground level. In pasture, located on a low rise bordering the W side of a strip of wet, marshy area. There is rising ground to E. A circular embanked enclosure (diam. 30-35m), with a field boundary immediately adjacent at W−NW, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; on the 1922 edition it is depicted as a D-shaped hachured enclosure (diam. c. 20m N−S), truncated on the straight N side by ENE−WSW field boundary. The enclosure, most likely a rath, has been levelled. A low undulating rise marks the location, bordered at N by an ENE−WSW field fence/property boundary. In pasture, straddling the highest point on a small NE−SW ridge, which provides extensive views in all directions, with a stream 100m to NW, Lough Brohly 700m to SW, and the rising slopes of the Ox Mountains to E. The surrounding terrain is a mix of pasture, broken by rocky outcrops, and expanses of bog. Slightly raised circular area (48.5m N−S; 48.6m E−W) defined by a sod-covered stone bank (Wth 2.2m; int. H 0.3m at NW, 0.8m at NE; ext. H 1.5m at NW, 1.2 at NE). The rath has been incorporated into a system of later field walls: the stone bank is topped with a later field wall (Wth 0.8-1m), and field walls radiate from it to NW, SE, S and SW. The interior has a gentle slope down from centre to S−SE. Current access is through a gap (Wth 1.6m) in the stone bank at SSW, flanked on the W side by a later field wall, but it is not clear if this is an original entrance. A partly stone-faced scarp (H 1.5m at W) curves around the rath at SSW−WNW. It merges with the rath perimeter at SSW but arcs out to a distance of 5-6m from the stone bank at WNW. It is possible that it incorporates remnants of an outer enclosing bank, but it may simply be a relatively recent scarping of the natural ridge slope. Clumps of blackthorn and brambles ring the perimeter. Another rath (MA040-062) is located 200m to NE on the same ridge top---- ridge, and is visible from this one.
