Situated on elevated ground at the highest point within a graveyard (SL033-001002-), overlooking the Atlantic at the extreme S end of the Mullet Peninsula. The ground falls towards a rocky shoreline 170m to S, and a beach defines a small, crescent-shaped bay 250m to W. This stone-built church, Romanesque (12th-century) in date, is dedicated to St. Deirbhile. It is rectangular (ext. dims. 14.3m WNW-ESE; 6.6m NNE-SSW) in plan, built of roughly coursed granite masonry (Wall T. 0.8m). The gable walls are relatively intact and survive to almost their original height, although the S side of the W gable has fallen. The side walls are reduced their lowermost 2-3 courses (H 0.2-0.5m), except at the NE angle where a short section of the N wall survives to almost its full height. The E gable wall contains a narrow, round-headed window in a round-headed splayed embrasure. Two tiny fragments of iron, which are visible in the external frame, are all that remains of fittings for an external wooden shutter. On the internal gable face, there is small rectangular recess or aumbry at present ground floor level, immediately to N of the window. The W gable contains a slightly splayed, rounded-headed doorway, which appears to be original. A single, shaped stone serves as the head of the arch on each face of the doorway, and each stone is decorated with concentric semi-circular grooving, mirroring the round arch. On the external face, very weathered, indescipherable remnants of a decorative motif can be seen beneath the arc of incised grooves. There is a panel of decorative carving on a stone on the internal N side of the doorway. The carving is worn, but appears to be an interlace pattern. Four steps lead downwards from external ground level to the doorway, and a further three lead upwards from the doorway to the present ground level in the interior of the church; these steps post-date the church, and reflect changes in ground level over time. At some stage in its history, the church was enlarged. This involved widening it to the S and lengthening to E, almost doubling in length. Evidence of this can be seen in the W gable, where the original, smaller roof line is visible, and the original doorway is now off-centre in the expanded gable. During this expansion phase, a new doorway was inserted into the rebuilt S wall towards its W end. Only the threshold stone, flanked by two low stones, remain of this doorway. Within the church are a number of upright uninscribed graveslabs. One (H 0.93m; Wth 0.27m; T 0.22m) has a simple incised Latin cross on its ESE face (H of stem 0.24m; L of arms 0.22m). A fragment of a round-headed window arch also lies within the church, originally from a window in one of the side walls. immediately to the N of the church is a graveslab (MA033-001005-) said to mark St Deirbhile's grave. The church is a National Monument in State ownership (No. 99). Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 June 2018 - MA033-001002: Graveyard, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA033-001002-. Located on elevated ground c. 150m N of the rocky shore on the S end of the Mullet Peninsula. There is a small bay, bordered by a beach, 280m to W. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a sub-oval area (c. 50-55m EW; c. 35m N-S) delimited by a dashed line, and annotated as 'Burial Ground', with 'Fallmore church' (MA033-001001-) and 'St Derivla's Grave' (SL033-001005-) indicted in the E half. By the time of the 1921 edition, the graveyard had expanded to its current subrectangular extent (75m E−W; 60m N−S). It is enclosed by a stone wall, bordered at S by a road, and encompasses a natural rise or small knoll, with a steep slope down at S−W. The wall on the S side, which is built against the base of the slope, describes a shallow curve, mirroring the curve of the hill. There is a dense concentration of graves, occupying both the level high ground and the steep slopes. Many graves are marked by low, uninscribed headstones; the majority are roughly rectangular unshaped stones, but a few have been cut to a simple cross-shape. Interspersed amongst these, are formal inscribed headstones, dating to the 19th and 20th centuries. Several graves are outlined by an accumulation of white, quartzite beach cobbles. The church (MA033-001001-) is located on a level area at the highest point in NE quadrant of the graveyard, and immediately to N of the church is a graveslab (MA033-001005-), which according to tradition, marks the grave of St. Dairible. At N the graveyard wall overlies an earthen bank which may be a remnant of an early ecclesiastical enclosure (MA033-001008-). The graveyard was in use until the early 1970’s; a large, modern graveyard is located to S. In the NE quadrant of a graveyard (MA033-001002-), 4.5m NNE of a church (MA033-001001-). The 1838 OS Letters which record the tradition that the 'Virgin Saint Derrivla' was interred in Fallmore graveyard 'in a small enclosure apart from the church' (O’Flanagan 1927, 214 (112)). A stone-built wall (T 0.8m; ext. H 0.5-0.85m) defines a rectangular area (ext. dims. 3.5m WNW-ESE; 3m NNE-SSW) within which there is a cross-inscribed stone (MA033-001005-), said to mark the saint’s grave. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 1 July 2019 - MA033-001005: Cross-inscribed stone, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA033-001005-. Located within a small walled rectangular plot or shrine (MA033-001003-) immediately to N of a church (MA033-001001-) in the NE quadrant of a graveyard (MA033-001002-). Indicated as ‘St Dervla’s Grave’ on the 1838 and 1921 OS 6-inch maps. According to tradition this cross-inscribed stone marks the grave of St. Deirbhile, to whom the adjacent church is dedicated. It consists of a narrow, upright rectangular stone (H 0.72m; Wth 0.3m; T 0.2m) with an incised Latin cross on its E face. The horizontal and vertical arms of the cross have T-terminals. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 June 2018 - MA033-001007: Earthwork, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA033-001007-. In pasture, located immediately to N of a graveyard (MA033-001002-). Two low, grass-covered earthen banks (Wth on top, 1.4-1.9m; H 0.2-0.5m), set c. 24m apart, extend to N from the external face of the enclosing wall at the N side of the graveyard. The E bank extends 25m to N, and the W bank extends 40m. The E bank clearly overlies the early ecclesiastical enclosure (MA033-001008-). They appear to be the remains of field divisions post-dating the ecclesiastical enclosure, and probably also the graveyard wall, and may be of relatively recent date. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 June 2018 - MA033-001008: Ecclesiastical enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA033-001008-. Located on the N side of a graveyard (MA033-001002-). The drystone enclosing wall (Wth 0.9m; ext. H 0.9m) on the N side of the graveyard, overlies an grass-covered earthen bank (ext. H 0.4m), which projects 2.2m to N from beneath the graveyard wall. The earthen bank may be the remains of an ecclesiastical enclosure, perhaps contemporary an early phase of religious foundation at this location or with the current Romanesque church (MA033-001001-).
