- MA093-029: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA093-029----. In pasture, located on the SE-facing slope of a rise, with extensive views NW–N, in an area of undulating grassland. Ground falls away gradually to N towards a natural depression of rush-grown ground, now cut by a drain. An oval area (c. 40m N-S; c. 35m E–W), which is not noticeably raised, but incorporates a natural rise at NW–N. It is enclosed at N–SE by an earthen bank (Wth 1.6m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.3m), which is built up at NE to compensate for a natural slope, but is low and degraded at E–SE. It is levelled at SSE–SW to a faint undulation. At SW–NNW the bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 1.35m) is modified to serve as a field fence. The interior slopes from W–NW down to E–S. A low area (Wth c. 2m) at ENE−E where the bank is reduced to a scarp may indicate the location of the original entrance. Two field fences, one on a NW–SE axis and the other on a NE–SW axis, cross the S half of the interior, intersecting in the centre of the interior. Remnants of another field fence (Wth 1.2m; H 0.35m) cross the W edge of the interior on a NNE–SSW axis. Interior grassy; overgrowth on bank/field fence at W. In pasture, prominently sited on a hillock with a steep slope to SE–S. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. In pasture, located on a ridge, with a steep fall of ground on the S side giving good views, particularly extensive to S over lowlying, gently rolling grassland, and to SE over an area of bog. Roughly D-shaped, flat-topped platform or mound (7.3m N-S; 5.4m E-W to pit; H 0.7m) truncated on the straight side to W by a sandpit (7m N-S; 6m E-W; D 1-1.5m). A slightly raised stony rim gives the platform a slightly concave profile. A number of large stones, protruding from the sod, form a rough outer facing or kerb at NNW-N. Merging with the E side of the mound is a low, linear berm-like feature (Wth 1m; H 0.4m), which does not extend beyond the mound, possibly the remnant of a N-S field boundary. The section face of the sandpit reveals that the mound is composed of an upper layer (D 0.15m) of jumbled small-medium stones, beneath which is a layer (D 0.3m) of brown sandy soil with occasional inclusions of small stones, pebbles and charcoal fragments. This overlies orange boulder clay which appears to be natural. There is a rath (MA093-029----) c. 200m to NW and an enclosure (MA093-030----) is c. 200m to SW. On the level top of a ridge, adjacent to a townland boundary in the NE corner of a rectangular pasture field. A roughly D-shaped mound (5.7m E-W; 3.2m N–S; H 0.7m at S, 1m at N) bordered on the straight N side by an E–W field ditch (Wth 2m) outside which is a field bank/townland boundary. The mound appears to be largely earthen but incorporates some stone. According to local tradition, it may have been used as a children’s burial ground, but no traces of graves or gravemarkers are now evident. It is obscured by gorse.
