In fairly level pasture, with good views over the surrounding gently undulating terrain. There is an expanse of bog a few hundred meters to SE. The Partry Mountains define the skyline at W−NW, with the peak of Croagh Patrick rising above at NW. An oval enclosure/feature (c. 18m N−S; c. 10m E−W) bordered at W by a field wall is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; an oblong hachured feature is shown on the 1915 edition. Subrectangular flat-topped mound (top: 11m N−S; 8.4m E−W) defined by a dilapidated stony scarp (H 0.8m at S, 0.7m at N; Wth slope 1m at S, 3.5m at N). It appears to be composed of earth and stones. There is a hint of a raised rim at the top of the scarp in parts, especially at NW. Large stones protrude from the scarp on the W side –perhaps remnants of stone facing or a wall (the W side appears to be incorporated into a boundary on the 1838 OS 6-inch map). A low sod-covered stony rise, probably the remnants of a field fence- extends S from the SW corner. A crabapple tree grows on the top of the mound at its N end and hawthorn and elder trees grow around the scarp. Farm stock have denuded sections of the surface and scarp. In pasture, on elevated ground with very good views. A circular enclosure (diam. 35-40m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. It is enclosed within a walled polygonal enclosure (max. diam. c. 95m), with an intervening gap of c. 20m between the circular enclosure and the outer wall. The polygonal enclosure is also recorded on the 1915 map edition but the circular enclosure is not shown. There is no visible trace of the circular enclosure at ground level. Most of the outer polygonal enclosure has also been removed, bar a section of the wall on the W side, outside which there is a farm road. In pasture, on a plateau with good views in all directions; the Partry Mountains delimit the far horizon SW-NW. A circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 35-40m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. It has been partly levelled. The remains consist of a low, subcircular platform (24.5m NW-SE; c. 21m NE-SW) defined by a broadly sloping scarp. A field bank, with a silted-up field ditch on its N side, crosses the NW third of the enclosure on a NE-SW axis. The portion of the enclosure lying to N of the field fence is better preserved with a relatively well defined scarp (H 0.5-0.75m; Wth slope c. 2m), surrounded by a small grove of pine trees, four of which are planted on the enclosure scarp. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 August 2023 - MA119-035: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA119-035----. In the N corner of a modern rectangular pasture field, encompassing a natural rise with a slight fall of ground SE-S to an expanse of damp pasture. Views are good but not extensive. Broadly oval area (47.6m NNE-SSW; 42.8m WNW-ESE) defined by a low earthen scarp, planted with a ring of sycamore trees. The enclosure subsumes the entire natural rise, with the enclosing scarp cut vertically into the natural slope. A section of the scarp at S is relatively substantial (H 0.8m) with a hint of an internal lip (Wth 1m), but elsewhere around the circuit it is slight (H 0.35-0.5m), and at NE-ESE it is almost entirely degraded by farm stock. At SE the scarp becomes a broad ramp-like slope (Wth 8m). The centre and E of the interior are relatively level, but there is a marked slope down to S and W, with a drop in height of c. 1.5m at NW. A roughly circular pit (diam. c. 7m; D c. 0.5m) has been quarried out of the slope in the N part of the interior, just inside the scarp, and a similar, though shallower, depression is evident in the S slope of the interior. The remains indicate that a low natural rise has been modified to form an enclosure. It is likely that it was constructed as a decorative tree-ring on the Frenchgrove House estate, though it is not impossible that it is the remnants of a ringfort. There is a very similar enclosure (MA119-036----) 140m to NE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 August 2023 - MA119-036: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA119-036----. Encompassing a low natural rise, in lowlying pasture, with good views of surrounding landscape. The base of a low oval rise is scarped to form an oval enclosure (48m NNE-SSW; c. 50m WNW-ESE; H c. 1.5m). It has a relatively small level area (c. 16m N-S; c. 10m E-W) on top from which ground gradually falls towards the perimeter, where it levels out for a width of 2-4m, at the outer edge of which is the scarp, reduced now to a slight undulation. According to local information, the enclosure was once ringed with trees, but the trees were felled and the enclosing scarp was levelled. While it is not impossible that this is the remains of a ringfort, it is more likely that it was constructed as a decorative tree-ring on the Frenchgrove House estate. There is a very similar enclosure (MA119-035----) 140m to SW. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
