This church is named ‘Temple Patrick’ on the 1838 and 1920 OS 6-inch maps, but there is now no visible trace of it at ground level (Morahan 2001, 128). It is unknown when it was built. It was still in use when it was recorded in the 1838 OS Letters as ‘the little chapel called Teampull Patruig, which is sixteen feet long [4.9m] and eight broad [2.4m] at the east end, where the stone Altar is placed, and only five [1.5m] at the entrance. Its east gable is eight and a half feet high [2.6m], and many votive nails and rags are thrust in between the stones.’ (O'Flanagan 1927, 434-7 (216-7). It was surrounded by a rough enclosure or wall (MA087-044003-). A visit to the chapel was part of the traditional pattern or round of prayers which took place on the summit: ‘The Pilgrim kneels before the Altar and repeats fifteen Aves and one Creed’ (ibid. 434-7 (216-7)). A programme of survey and excavations in 1994-5 uncovered the remains close by of an early medieval church (MA087-044005-). It is likely that successive churches or oratories have been erected on the summit over the centuries. The church which now stands on the summit was built in 1905, and was extended in 1962. There is now no trace of this enclosure which encircled a small church (MA087-044001-), known as ‘Temple Patrick’. The 1838 OS Letters described it as ‘an irregular circle of stones.' (O'Flanagan 1927, 434-7 (216-7)). On Croagh Patrick Mountain. This penitential station is named ‘Leaba Patrick’ [bed of Patrick] on the 1838 and 1920 OS 6-inch maps. According to Tírechán, St. Patrick’s late 7th-century biographer, St Patrick undertook a Lenten pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick, spending forty days and forty nights fasting and praying on the summit. In later folk tradition, ‘Leaba Patrick’ was believed to be where he rested during this ordeal. It is evident now as a natural-looking hollow in the ground surface. Its exact nature and history are uncertain –it may, for instance, have been the site of an early building or oratory, preserved only in folk memory as the site of Patrick’s bed. The 1838 OS Letters describe it as 'of small dimensions and resembling a dried up well', suggesting that structural remains were then in evidence. At that date, it had already become a prayer station on the pilgrimage round of the summit, where the pilgrim ‘repeats on his knees seven Paters, seven Aves, and one Creed. This done, he walks seven times around the same bed…praying as he goes along.’ (O'Flanagan 1927, 434-7 (216-7)). Located on the summit of Croagh Patrick, c. 25m east of the 20th-century church. The wall footings of this small stone-built medieval building, interpreted as a church or oratory were discovered during excavation (94E0115) in 1994 (Walsh 1996; Morahan, 2001, 18-19). It is rectangular (ext. dim. 7.76m E–W; 5.52m N–S) in plan, with carefully constructed drystone walls of flat schist flags. The surviving wall height varies from 1.16m on the inner face of the W wall to only 0.2m on the N wall. The slight outward inclination of the bedding joints of the stonework directed the rain to the outside. The S wall and the SW corner are cut into the natural rock to a depth of 0.7m. This gives it the impression of it being a 'sunken' building. Evidence of corbelling on the S and E walls suggested that the building had a corbelled stone roof. The doorway (W 0.68m) is in the E wall. This position is unusual, as an entrance in the W wall is usual in an Early Medieval church, but the prevailing south-westerly winds on the mountain summit may have determined the choice of an E entrance. A flat threshold flag (1.2m x 0.7m) was flanked by postholes to support posts for a timber door; on the N side were twin rectangular postholes, with a single posthole on the S side. In the interior, a levelling foundation layer of gravel overlay bedrock. Above the gravel was an organic layer (D 0.8m). A spread (D 0.1m) of stone chips intervened between this and an upper peat-rich, organic layer (D 0.8m) which produced three flints, an animal bone, iron fragment, and a possibly worked stone. Overlying this was a dark soil layer incorporating flagstones and stone chippings, possibly the remnants of a floor level. Finds in this layer included three sherds of native medieval pottery (13th to 15th-century), two corroded bronze pins (a third was found outside the building), some fragments of iron, two worked flints and some possibly worked stones. A few intrusive modern finds also occurred. Centrally placed at this level was a spread of charcoal (D 0.34m), divided by a line of flagstones. Sealing this was a layer of large flat stones, probably from the inward collapse of the walls. Radiocarbon analysis of a charcoal sample produced an Early Medieval date, falling within the range 430-890 AD (Morahan, 2001, 19). The building appears to have been a small corbelled, boat-shaped oratory, similar in design to Gallarus oratory (KE042-071004-) on the Dingle peninsula. Initially it was thought that this building might be the remains of the small church (MA087-044001-), indicated on the 1838 and 1920 OS 6-inch maps, and traditionally known as Temple Patrick. However, the measurements and the location of the entrance do not correspond to those recorded in the 1838 OS Letters for that church (Morahan, 2001, 19). It is likely that successive churches were built and rebuilt on the summit over the centuries. There are references to claims for church taxes from buildings on Croagh Patrick in 824 and 1216 AD; a church at 'Cruachpatric', is, for instance, listed in an epistle of Pope Honorious III in 1216. Located on Croagh Patrick Mountain. The summit of Croagh Patrick is enclosed by the remnants of a bank or wall of stone rubble defining an oblong or sub-rectangular area (c. 154m E-W; c. 20m N-S at W end, c. 30-35m at E end). In the early 19th-century, Ottway (1839, 319) noted it as 'a low wall built of large, uncemented stones evidently of the most ancient construction'. The wall is now difficult to trace around its entire circuit, being visible mainly as a low spread of loose stone (Wth 5-6m), and at the E end evident only as a low scarp. It largely follows the natural contours of the summit, and the external slope of the wall merges in parts with the natural break of slope of the mountain. In the E half of the enclosure are the remains of an early medieval church (MA087-044005-) and a penitential station (MA087-044004-), known as 'Leaba Patrick'. There is a break or possible entrance (Wth 2m) in the wall at W, opening towards 'Roilig Mhuire', a possible enclosure (MA087-0043001-) with a cluster of penitential cairns (MA087-043003-; MA087-043004-, MA087-043005-), located 450m downslope to SW. Sections of the wall at W and NW were excavated (94E115) in 1995 (Walsh, 1996; Morahan, 2001, 19-21). The excavation revealed an inner wall face (H c. 0.6m) constructed of flat schist stones, built on top of natural scree; no evidence of an external wall face was found. Several coloured glass beads, two amber beads, and flint and chert flakes were recovered in shallow layers of soil and scree immediately in front of the wall. The amber beads may date to the Bronze Age, but were not recovered from a secure context. The blue glass beads fall within a date range extending from the Iron Age to the Early Medieval period. None of the finds proved diagnostic in terms of dating the construction of the wall. It may have its origins in the prehistoric era, or it may have been built, or reused, to enclose an early medieval monastic settlement. It is one of a cluster of hut sites (MA087-044009-), located at the NW end of the summit. It consists of a circular area (diam. 5m) defined by a collapsed stone wall (H 0.2m). The N half of the hut site was excavated (94E0115) in 1995 (Walsh, 1996; Morahan, 2001, 20). In the interior, a shallow peaty layer (D 0.15m), incorporating a spread of charcoal, overlay naturally occurring rock outcrop and scree. A fragment of a chert flake, a minute fragment of bronze and a modern penny were found within the charcoal layer. Another excavated hut site (MA087-044008-) is located c. 100m to WSW. Located on the summit of Croagh Patrick, c. 75m W of the enclosure (MA087-044006-) which occupies the summit plateau. It is one of several of hut sites (MA087-044009-), located at the NW and W end of the summit. This hut site consists of an oval area (3.2m N-S; 1.7m E-W) defined by a collapsed drystone wall (Wth 0.45m at E, 1m at W; H 0.3m). It was excavated (94E0115) in 1995 (Walsh, 1996; Morahan, 2001, 21). Examination of the wall revealed no intact inner or outer wall face. In the interior, bedrock was overlain by a shallow peaty layer (D 0.14m), within which was found a fragment of a retouched flint flake, a chert flake and a chert chip. Above this was a thin layer of sod. Another excavated hut site (MA087-044007-) is located c. 100m to ENE.
