- MA103-008001: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA103-008001-. In undulating pasture, on a low rise. Ground dips gently to E towards a roughly N−S stream/drain. A rectangular E−W building is shown at a ‘Burial Ground’ on the 1838 OS 6-inch map but is not named as a church; the building is not shown on the 1916 edition where a ‘Children’s Burial Ground’ (MA102-008002) is indicated. It is known locally as Kilmullin church (SMR file: pers. comm. Gerry Cribbin). The remains consist of a ruined rectangular stone building (c. 12m E–W; c. 6m N–S). The W wall (L c. 5.8m N−S; T 0.8m) is the best preserved, surviving to a height of 2.4m. It is constructed of roughly coursed, mortared sandstone blocks, with large blocks forming the basal courses, alternating with courses of thinner, horizontally laid slabs. However much of the internal and external wall facing has collapsed. A dilapidated central break (Wth c. 0.9m) in the wall appears to be the remains of a doorway. Short returns of the S and N walls survive at the NW and SW angles of the W wall. The remainder of the N wall is reduced to grass-covered wall footings/stone-faced scarp (ext. H 0.8m). The S wall is incorporated into the line of an E–W property wall. The E wall is evident as a broadly slumped, sod-covered stony scarp. The children’s burial ground (MA102-008002-) abuts the S wall of the church, extending the full E-W length of the church. Partly obscured by overgrowth/clumps of brambles. In undulating pasture, on a low rise. Ground dips gently to E towards a roughly N−S stream/drain. A rectangular earthen platform (12m E–W; 6m N–S; H 0.6m) abuts the S wall of a ruined rectangular church (MA103-008001-). The N side of the platform is crossed by an E-W field wall, which incorporates the S wall of the church. The platform is defined on the other three sides by a slumped, sod-covered stony scarp (H 0.6m), with a dilapidated break/low area in the centre of the S side. Many low, uninscribed upright stone gravemarkers, some arranged in N−S rows, protrude from the surface of the platform, interspersed with occasional small recumbent slabs. In a field of reclaimed pasture. According to local information, there was a megalithic structure at this location, which was removed in the 1980’s during land reclamation (SMR file 1991). In pasture, on the edge of a naturally sheltered depression of wet, boggy ground at the base of a NW-facing slope, adjacent to a spring which flows from the base of the slope; an outflow stream extends to NW and is now channelled into a field drain. This possible fulacht fia appears to have been partly levelled in the past. It is evident as a low, subcircular rise (diam. c. 12m), with indistinct edges which merge to S with gently rising ground. The exact limits of the mound are difficult to determine. When inspected in 1998, a portion the N edge of the mound was denuded of sod, revealing characteristic heat-shattered stone in black charcoal-rich soil. In pasture, in a small stand of conifers, adjacent to a spring. The remains consist of a low, roughly circular mound (diam. c. 10-2m). Two heaps (diam. 2-3.5m; H 0.5-0.6m) of shattered stone and black soil, set 2m apart, sit on top of the mound, possibly the result of disturbance during the planting of conifer trees which are growing on the mound. The mound is clipped at WNW by a field drain, in the section face of which heat-shattered stone in charcoal-rich soil is visible. A tumbled field wall overlies the SE edge of the mound. In pasture, adjacent to a field drain in a natural depression of wet ground. Ground rises gently to the NW. Prominent roughly D-shaped, sod-covered rise (10.6m N–S; 14.4m E–W; H 0.5-0.6m) with broadly sloping sides. The SE side is marked by a slumped almost linear scarp (H 0.7m), possibly result of disturbance during construction of the field drain, which lies 2m to SE and is now largely silted up. A slight dip in the mound on the S-SW side, facing an area of wettish ground, may indicate the location of a trough. Angular stone fragments, charcoal fragments and dark soil were visible at the S and W sides of the mound when it was inspected in 1998. A townland is the smallest land division of Ireland, and the unit of a rural address; old registers such as the 1901 and 1911 censuses file it under its civil parish and barony.
