In rough unenclosed grazing, on the western tip of Achill Island, located on the banks of a stream, flowing through a small steep-sided valley, and overlooked at E by the precipitous rocky slopes of Croaghaun mountain. The stream flow downslope to N to a short accessible stretch of the rocky shore, flanked by cliffs. This cluster of stone-built hut sites constitutes a booley village, used as temporary shelter for herders while cattle were kept on remote upland grazing. The huts occur in a linear cluster on both banks of the stream. The ruined roofless huts are rectangular or oblong in plan, with long axis N-S. Most have rounded corners but at least one has a true rectangular shape with right-angled corners. The walls (Wth c. 0.6m) are of drystone construction using rough stones and and boulders, and survive largely intact to a height of c. 1-1.4m. Two groupings of huts can be seen within the cluster as a whole. To N there is a linear group of nine huts, surviving in relatively good condition, each measuring c. 6-7m N-S by c. 3-4m E-W. The majority have a doorway in the centre of the W wall but one has a doorway in the E wall. Several have the remains of a central E-W partition wall, dividing the hut into two rooms. Most have a small slab-lined recess, or wall cupboard, built into the thickness of the wall. Some of the two-roomed huts have two cupboards, one in each room. Eight of the huts in this group are freestanding but a smaller ninth hut has one wall built against a natural slope. Located c. 40m upslope to S is a second grouping of six or possibly seven huts. They are of similar construction to the N grouping but are located where the course of the stream flows trough a deep gully and most have one wall built against the vertical gully slope. The majority are smaller than the huts of the N grouping, some measuring c. 3-4m N-S by c. 2-2.5m E-W. One of the largest huts in this grouping has a small additional room or possibly another hut appended to its N end. There are two other structures in the settlement. One is a rough hut or shelter, located c. 30m to NE of the N grouping of huts. It utilises a natural rock out-crop on the rising E slope of the valley. A rough stone wall encloses a space (c. 3.5m N-S; c. 2m E-W) against the outcrop, beneath a projecting slab of rock which serves as a natural roof. The second structure is a roughly square, stone-walled enclosure (c. 15m N-S; c. 12m E-W), probably a pound for animals, which is located on the E slope of the valley c. 25m N of the huts. Set upright in the centre of the flat top of a modern stone-built altar (MA053-003002-). This uninscribed stone slab (H c. 0.42m; max Wth 0.3m; T 0.1m) has a splayed rounded top narrowing to a ‘waist’ from which the stone splays again to a base concealed within the top of the stone altar. This figure of eight shape gives the stone a roughly cross-like appearance. The provenance and date of the stone are unknown. An account of an ‘Altar of the penal days’, consisting of ‘a heap of stones’, which stood at this location in the early 1940’s makes no mention of this slab (O’Kelly 1942, 3). According to local information, the altar in which it is currently set was constructed in the 1960’s. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 9 January 2017 - MA053-003002: Altar, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA053-003002-. On a SE-facing slope in the SE end of a steep-sided, boggy valley overlooking Keem Bay. O’Kelly (1942, 3) recorded this as an ‘Altar of the penal days’, consisting of ‘a heap of stones’ with a large stone with a natural hollow which collected rain water that was used by people to cross themselves. These features are no longer evident. A D-shaped, flat-topped drystone-built structure or ‘altar’ (2.5m NE−SW; 2.2m NW−SE; H 0.95m), built by local people in the 1960’s, now stands on the location. Set upright in the centre of the flat top is a roughly cross-shaped stone slab (MA-53-003001-). Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 9 January 2017 - MA053-003003: Settlement cluster, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA053-003003-. Located in the lower, SE end of a steeply-sloping valley overlooking Keem Bay. A dispersed cluster of c. 40 rectangular buildings or houses is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. The houses are spread over an area of c. 240m E−W by 200m N−S, with houses in the N half of the settlement indicated as a series of small linear clusters lining the banks of two branching streams which flow to SE into Keem Bay. A larger cluster of c. 19 houses is located to S of the streams. The settlement is not shown on 1920 OS 6-inch map. There are scant visible remains. The best preserved remains consist of 12-14 rectangular, grass-covered wall footings which correspond to houses in the southern part of the settlement. They can be seen on an area of relatively level elevated ground immediately to NW of the disused early 20th-century coast guard station which now dominates the landscape in this end of the valley. Two of the house foundations have been excavated (09E0302) by Achill Archaeological Field School as part of a research project. One of the houses (designated ‘building 3’ in the excavation reports), located on a subrectangular terrace at ITM 455651 804551, was excavated over two seasons in 2009 and 2015 (Bolger 2009; Rathbone 2015). The excavation revealed a rectangular house (8.75m NW−SE; 4.55m NE−SW), with slightly rounded external corners, defined by the remnants of a drystone-faced wall (Wth 0.9-1m) with an earthen core. There was an entrance gap/doorway in the SW wall. An oval-shaped hearth was located in the NW end of the house, and a stone-lined drain cut across the SE end of the interior, suggesting that the SE end of the house was reserved for the cattle. The excavation clarified that the house was a permanent residence rather than a seasonally-used, booley-type dwelling. A large assemblage of finds, including creamware, pearlware, earthenware, iron objects, and fragments of glass, suggests an early 19th-century date for occupation of the house. The foundations of another, slightly smaller house (designated ‘building 4’ in the excavation report) lie immediately to W. This house was investigated in 2016 in a further season of excavation (under an extension of the same license 09E0302) (Campbell 2016). The excavation revealed that this house had distinctively rounded corners, giving it an oblong plan (c. 8m NW−SE by 4m NE-SW). The walls (Wth 1-1.2m) were of drystone construction, retaining an earth and sod core, with an entrance slightly off-centre in the SW wall. Three different hearths, located in the central part of the house, were used over the period of occupation. An internal drain cut diagonally across the NW third of the house, exiting at the doorway. Ceramic finds, such as creamwares, pearlwares and earthenwares dominated, indicating a late 18th- or early 19th-century date. The settlement may be associated with some of the field walls, banks and cultivation ridges in a field system (MA053-003004-) which encloses this end of the valley. The excavations produced evidence that both houses were deliberately demolished and the walls levelled out. One possibility is that the settlement as a whole was removed as part of land improvement schemes introduced in the 1850’s and 60’s by Captain Boycott, who built a house (MA053-003005-) on an elevated terrace to NW of the settlement. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
