This is a National Monument in State ownership (No. 423). It is shown on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as rectangular enclosed area (c. 20m E-W; c 13m N-S) marked 'Burial ground', and on the 1920 edition as an oval area, indicated by a dotted line, marked 'Giant's Grave' and Burial ground (disused)'. It consists of a low, approx. oval-shaped mound of earth and stone (14.05m ENE-WSW; 10.2m NNW-SSE) rising to a maximum height of 0.9m. Centrally located on the mound is cross-inscribed slab (MA044-009002-). At the SW end of the mound is a standing stone (MA024-009003-). de Valéra and Ó Nualláin (1964, Appendix. no. 14, 97-98) assessed this monument as follows: ‘This feature is shown on the O.S. 6”1837 as a “Burial Ground”. The name “Giant’s Grave” first appears on O.S 6” revision of 1893. At the site is a mound about 15.00 m. by 10.00 m. and up to 1.00 m. high. Two pillar-stones, one with an inscribed cross in circle, are set upright in the mound. About forty yards westward are two small heaps of stones about 5.00 m. diameter and .75 m. high. There is no reason to assume that a megalithic tomb existed here.’ Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 18 June 2018 - MA044-009002: Cross-inscribed pillar, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA044-009002-. Located in a burial ground (MA044-009001-), which survives as a low mound (14.5m ENE-WSW; 10.2m NNW-SSE). The cross-inscribed pillar is centrally located on the mound. It is a National Monument in State ownership (No. 423). It consists of an upright, roughly rectangular-shaped schist slab (H 2.02m; Wth 0.43m; T 0.23m), aligned WNW-ESE. The upper portion of the WNW face is occupied by an Maltese cross-in-circle (diam. 0.37m), incised in false relief. A number of small packing or support stones surround the base of the stone. There is a standing stone (MA044-009003-) located at the SW end of the burial ground. Located in a burial ground (MA044-009001-). The burial ground survives as a low mound (14.5m ENE-WSW; 10.2m NNW-SSE). The standing stone is located at the SW edge of the mound. It is a National Monument in State ownership (No. 423). It consists of an upright, subrectangular-shaped stone (H 1.46m; Wth 0.9m; T 0.23m), tapering to a point at top, and aligned NNE-SSW. It tilts slightly to WNW. Moran (1942, 149) recorded that the W face is divided into a number of 'diamond shaped figures by intersecting lines'. These 'lines' are natural faults in the stone. There is a cross-inscribed pillar (MA044-009002-) located a few meters to NE, at the centre of the burial ground. In pasture, located on an ENE facing slope overlooking an inlet of Blacksod Bay. Included in the RMP (1997) on the basis of a published record (Moran 1942, 149) of a ruined rectangular building (c. 9m x c. 13m) and circular building (MA044-009006-) which were located c. 90m to NW of a mound (MA0044-009001-) and cross-inscribed pillar (MA044-009002-). A rectangular building or house, on a NE–SW axis, is shown at roughly this location on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, and on the 1920 edition as a rectangular 3-sided structure or ruined building. Field inspection determined that the building is a ruined vernacular structure used as an animal shelter.
