In pasture, located on a NNW−SSE rise/low ridge, with a fall of ground to NE and SE, in an area of sharply undulating terrain. This enclosure, probably a rath, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular ringfort-like embanked enclosure and on the 1922 edition as a circular hachured enclosure (diam. 30-35m). It has been levelled; a low, grass-covered subcircular rise (diam. 25-30m), without clearly defined limits, is evident at the location. In pasture, located on elevated ground, with a fall of ground to N, in an area of sharply undulating terrain. Raised circular area (diam. 25m E−W) defined by an earthen bank. The bank (Wth 5.4m at S; 5.6m at NNE; int. H 0.45m at S, 0.3m at NNE; ext. H 2m at S, 2.6m at NNE) has a low, internal stony lip, and a pronounced external slope. There is a low area (Wth 1m) in the bank at E, roughly lined with stones on the S side, which may be the site of an original entrance. There are several eroded gaps, broken down by farm stock, around the perimeter at W and N. A field fence, set 4-5m outside the bank, skirts the rath at ESE−SW, respecting its curve. Interior under long grass and ferns; bank is thickly ringed with hazel, hawthorn and blackthorn scrub. In pasture, located on a roughly N−S rise or low ridge, in an area of sharply undulating terrain. Views are good NW−N and SE, but are restricted elsewhere by rising ground. Raised circular area (28n N−S; 28m E−W) defined by an earthen bank/scarp. The bank (Wth 5.7m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 2.6m) is most substantial at NE−E; it retains only a low internal lip at SE−S, and is reduced to a scarp (Wth slope 5.9m; ext. H 2.9m) elsewhere. The pronounced external slope of the bank at E and on the W arc is enhanced by the natural slope of the ridge. The bank has been modified and incorporated into a later system of field walls: The rath perimeter at NW−NE serves as a property boundary; the external face of the bank/scarp (ext. H 1.5m) on the S arc has been cut to vertical and faced with drystone walling, and remnants of later stone facing is also evident elsewhere around the circuit. Interior ground level in the SE quadrant dips or slopes down from the centre towards the perimeter at SE. There are a number of small, shallow roughly circular hollows (c. 2m; D 0.3-0.4m) in the interior at W, centre, NE and S. Grass cover in the interior; hazel and hawthorn trees around the perimeter. In pasture, located on top of a NNE−SSW ridge, close to the break of slope on the NW side. The location provides panoramic views across N Mayo, with Nephin Mountain and the Nephin Beg Range defining the skyline to W, and the long spine of the Ox Mountains at E−S. Not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. Roughly oval mound (17m E−W; 13.7m N−S; H 0.8m at S, 1.7m at N) of earth and stones, largely sod-covered. It is gently domed in profile, with a somewhat flattened top (diam. c. 10-11m). The sloping sides are irregular or ragged in parts, with evidence of disturbance or quarrying at SSE. A field wall on a roughly E−W axis extends across the mound, slightly S of centre. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 May 2020 - MA040-031001: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA040-031001-. In a graveyard (MA040-031002). There is no visible trace of the church. The 1838 OS Letters recorded that ‘the church has been destroyed’, but according to tradition it was located in the NE corner of the graveyard, and a tomb erected in 1836 by Howley of Belleek Castle ‘is said to stand where the old church was' (O’Flanagan 1927, 108). A structure or building, with an E-W axis, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map in the N of the graveyard; it is not marked as a church, and may represent the Howley tomb. The tomb, dated 1836, and dedicated to the wife of Edward Howley esq., of Belleek Castle, is enclosed by a wall of cut limestone, surmounted by wrought-iron railings. Appended to it E side is another rectangular grave enclosure (7m N–S; 3.4m E–W) defined by a mortared wall of stone rubble. The S wall is of stone and brick, and incorporates a gate. The N wall (L 3.4m; Wth 0.6m; int. H 2m; ext. H 1.5m) is of mortared, roughly coursed rounded boulders and horizontally laid stones. The E wall has collapsed to a low jumble of stone. It is possible that this grave enclosure reused stone from, or incorporated remnants of the church, but there is no definitive evidence of this. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 May 2020 - MA040-031002: Graveyard, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA040-031002-. Located on a S-facing slope, bordered by a stream at the base of the slope. On the 1838 OS 6-inch map this graveyard is indicated as a trapezoidal walled area (55m N−S; 50m E−W at N, 25m E−W at S), accessed at the NW corner by a road. By the time of its depiction on the 1931 edition, where it is named 'Kilgarvan Burial Ground', the graveyard had been expanded to the W and S to its current subrectangular extent (c. 85-90m N–S; c. 85m E–W at N, c. 65m E–W at S), enclosed by a mortared stone wall. A low, grassed-over scarp extending N–S through the middle of the current space appears to indicate the original W boundary of the early 19th-century graveyard. The interior area encompasses a sharply undulating S-facing slope; there is a relatively level area in the N third from where the ground shelves down in a series of slopes and terraces to lowlying ground at the S end, which is bordered by a stream. Formal, inscribed 19th- and 20th-century headstones are set in roughly N–S rows, and are interspersed with many low, uninscribed fieldstone gravemarkers, the greatest concentration of which is in the E, older half, of the graveyard. The informal gravemarkers appear to be more randomly scattered, but some are also arranged in N–S rows. According to the 1838 OS letters, there was a church (MA040-031001-) in the NE of the graveyard, its location now marked by a 19th-century walled grave enclosure, dedicated to the Howley’s of Belleek (O’Flanagan 1927, 108). There is an ogham stone (MA040-031004-) in the NE quadrant of the graveyard. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 May 2020 - MA040-031003: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA040-031003-. Listed in the 1991 SMR and the 1996 RMP as ‘enclosure –possible’, the source of this record is uncertain. It may be based on a reference in the 1838 OS Letters (O’Flanagan 1927, 108) to a section of the enclosing graveyard wall at NE that 'appears to be of ancient erection'. There is slight evidence of a difference at the E end of the N wall of the graveyard: Projecting 0.3m from beneath the inner face of the graveyard wall, is a stone plinth (L 11m; H 0.4m) consisting of two courses of what appears to be drystone walling. It is not visible beneath the external, N face of the wall. It is possible that an earlier graveyard wall/enclosure was here incorporated into the current graveyard wall. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 May 2020 - MA040-031004: Ogham stone, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA040-031004-. In the NE quadrant of a graveyard (MA040-031002-), lying on the ground surface. A prostrate, pillar-like block of granitic stone (L 1.35m N-S; Wth 0.3m E−W, T 0.15-0.2m), with a roughly rectangular cross-section, bearing an ogham inscription along one angle of its long axis. The stone lies on the ground surface with its long axis oriented N−S; the inscription can be seen on the upper angle on the W side of the stone. It extends from the N end of the stone to roughly mid-way along its length. The surface of the stone is moderately blotched with lichens and moss, with denser growth on the W face. (Jane O’Shaughnessy, field report) The ogham inscription has been interpreted as DOTAGNI or possibly COTAGNI, as the spall at the start of the inscription may have removed a couple of scores.
