In pasture, located at a break of slope on the S side a rise, with a stream c. 50m to S, and very good views in all directions. Named ‘Coolcran Fort’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps, this rath consists of a raised circular area (33m N–S; 29.5m E–W) defined by an earthen scarp, topped at E–WSW by a slightly raised stony internal rim (Wth 2.7m). The scarp (Wth slope c. 4m at SSW, 2m at N; ext. H 2m at SSW, 0.7m at N) is markedly more pronounced on the S half, where the rath is built up to compensate for the natural slope and to create a level interior. A slumped area (Wth 2m) in the scarp at E may indicate the location of the original entrance. At N–SSE the scarp has been modified to serve as a property division, and is topped with a post and wire fence and buttressed externally with a bank of stone. Ground level is slightly higher in the NW quadrant of the interior, and here close to the scarp at NW, there is a very shallow depression which may indicate the location of a souterrain (MA038-065002-). Traces of cultivation ridges traverse the interior on a NNW–SSE axis, particularly evident in the W half. A low field wall on a NNW–SSE axis bisects the E half of the interior. The rath perimeter is ringed with oak, hazel and blackthorn. In a rath (MA038-065001-). There is a souterrain in the interior of the rath (pers. comm. M. Keane, 1991, SMR file). A shallow depression close to the scarp in the slightly raised NW quadrant of rath may mark its location. In pasture, located just below the top on the NE side of a prominent rise in an area of rough pasture and bog. There are excellent views over a broad sweep of the surrounding landscape, with Nephin dominating the skyline to SSW. Small oblong mound (8.7m E-W; 6.3m N-S; H 0.5m at S, 1.4m at N) of earth and stones. It is rather irregular in shape and height, curving and broadly slumped on the E side but with a straighter, more vertical side at W. Many small stones protrude from the sod cover, and several hawthorn bushes grow on it. In rough, heather-covered pasture, located on the NE side of a low ridge, with flat expanse of bog to E and SE. Ground falls away to SW. There are extensive views to N and S, blocked to E by forestry plantation. This enclosure is not indicated on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-Inch maps. It consists of a circular area (20.7m N–S; 19.5m E–W) defined by a wall/stone bank (W 2.5-3m; int. H 0.3-0.4m; ext. H 0.55m) of loose, tumbled stone. At E–SE a later field wall overlies the stone bank. The interior has a slight slope down to E. A roughly circular pit (4m NNE-SSW; 3m WNW-ESE; D 0.75m), the base of which is covered with stones, is dug into the interior at E. The stone bank is largely covered by heather and ferns. In pasture, located at break of slope at top of E-facing slope, which overlooks flat bogland to E and pastureland to S. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; indicated on the 1922 edition as an oval area delineated by a dashed line. Sub-rectangular or roughly oval area (c. 20m NW-SE; 13.4m NE-SW) defined SE–N by a low ‘wall’ of sod-covered loose stone rubble (Wth 1.6m; H 0.3m), and at E, downslope side, by a broad eroded scarp (Wth slope 3.7m; H 1.6m). There is an entrance feature, consisting of a short passage (L 3-4m; Wth c. 3m) flanked by the rubble wall, which projects outwards from the NW side of the enclosure. The level interior is strewn with loose stone. In the centre, there is a small heap of stones at the base of a clump of hazel trees. There is a local tradition that this enclosure was used as a children's burial ground. According to local information, there was a 'grave-shaped' feature in the interior, now no longer visible. The perimeter is thinly ringed with hazel, blackthorn and hawthorn bushes, which also encroach on the interior. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
