In rolling average pasture, crowning the top of a small hillock, with excellent views in all directions, including the Ox Mountains to E-SE, and Nephin and the Nephin Beg range to W–SW. It overlooks a rath (MA022-009----) which is located downslope 30m to NW. The mound is visible as a low, circular rise (diam. c. 8-10m; H 0.8-1m), densely covered in brambles, blackthorn and hawthorn. The nature of this mound is uncertain; overgrowth impeded examination. It may be a remnant of a barrow. Extant field boundaries enclose the base of the hillock at W and S, and a low, defunct field bank/scarp skirts it at N−E. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 23 April 2019 - MA022-012: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA022-012----. In pasture, straddles a low rise in an area of rolling terrain, with extensive views in all directions, including Killala Bay to E. It is located close to the NE boundary of the townland. This rath is names ‘Parknaganny Fort’ on the 1838 and 1929 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a raised circular area (24m N–S; 25.5m E–W) defined by a earthen bank (Wth 5.8m at W, 6.7m at E; int. H 1.1m at W, 0.7m at E; ext. H 2.8m at W, 2.45m at E) and enclosed by a fosse (Wth 4.6m at W, 3.4m at E) and external bank (Wth 4.7m at W, 5-6m at E; int. H 1.55m at W, 0.4m at E; ext. H 0.6m at W, 1.5m at E). The enclosing elements are substantial and well defined. The entrance gap is at the SE; it appears originally to have been c. 2.5m in width, but has been eroded into a wider break (Wth 7.5m). There are traces of a causeway across the fosse, and a corresponding gap (Wth c. 8m), also widened in recent times, in the external bank. The rath interior is level and grassy. Remnants of a possible sub-rectangular house (MA022-012001-) abut the inner face of the bank at N. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 23 April 2019 - MA022-012001: House - indeterminate date, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA022-012001-. In the N half of a rath (MA022-012----). A sub-rectangular area (5m N–S; c. 9m E–W), which abuts the inner face of the rath bank, may be the remains of a house. A low and degraded, sod-covered stony bank (Wth 0.8-1.2m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.25m) defines the E, S and W sides, and the N side is formed by the rath bank. In pasture, located on a small but prominent hillock, which provides excellent views in all directions of the surrounding undulating grassland, with Nephin Mountain visible on the horizon to S. It appears to have been located just below the summit on the more gradually sloping NE side of the hillock. This monument is shown on both the 1838 and 1929 OS 6-inch maps as a small circular feature (diam. c. 8-10), clipped on the W side by a NNE−SSW field fence. There are now only slight remains in the form of a slightly raised area (c. 4m NE–SW; c. 4m NW–SE), rather irregular in plan, marked by a growth of rough vegetation. Remnants of the NNE−SSW field fence survive on the W side, as shown on the OS 6-inch maps; on the E side is another field bank on a NE-SW axis, which is part of a more recent layout of field divisions. The original function of this monument is now uncertain. Its depiction on the OS maps suggest that it was a mound; it may have been some form of barrow. In pasture, located on a S-facing slope, close to the base of the slope. It is on the course of a natural spring, which is now channelled into a field drain. This holy well is named ‘Toberachrinn’ on the 1838 and 1929 OS 6-inch maps. A roughly built drystone wall (H 0.4m) encloses a pool (1.1m N–S; 1m E–W) on the E side of the field drain/stream. According to local information, the well is dedicated to St. Brigid; stations were held still being held there in the first half of the 20th century, and an adjacent hawthorn tree was used as a repository for votive offerings, such as rags, and pennies. A traditional belief associated with the well was that if a fish were seen jumping in the water, then the pilgrim’s request would be granted, however, if the fish merely floated the request would be denied. There is a rath (MA022-014----) 40m to WNW. Located on the S side of Killala town, immediately to SW of the cathedral (MA022-017003-) and graveyard (MA022-017010-). A T-shaped building, annotated 'Castle', is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. It is depicted as a rectangular E-W building, with short N-S projection midway along the N side, and it is bordered to S by a large subrectangular expanse of formal gardens. It is not shown on later OS map editions, and there are now no visible remains at ground level. McHale (1985, 47) records that this ‘Castle’ was a bishop’s palace, already in existence in 1646 when a wall was built around it. It was the official residence of the Protestant Bishop of Killala and Achonry. There are records that it was repaired in 1663, and in 1691 Bishop William Lloyd repaired ‘at great expense the See-house and gardens which had been miserably despoiled during the wars under James II’ (McHale 1985, 48). Knox (1908, 349) refers to a 16th-century castle in Killala, which was owned by Richard Barrett, but it is unclear if this is the same building or another. In pasture, located towards the base of a steep SW-facing slope which forms one side of a narrow stream valley. This 19th-century burial ground is named ‘Cholera Burial Ground’ on the 1838 and 1929 OS 6-inch maps. It is shown on both editions as an elongated triangular space (c. 65-70m NW–SE; c. 20m NE–SW) bordered by field boundaries. The outline of the triangular enclosure can still be traced, although it is now bisected at its W end by a later NE–SW field fence. It is bordered at NE by an overgrowth-covered NW–SE field fence/scarp and at S by a linear feature (Wth c. 2.5m) which appears to be the remnants of a trackway. The enclosed space consists of a neglected strip of ground, densely engulfed in overgrowth. Two graves are visible, partly concealed in overgrowth, adjacent to the NW–SE field bank/scarp. Each consists of a horizontal rectangular graveslab resting on a roughly-built base of mortared stones. The inscription on one of the slabs reads: ‘Pray for the soul of Edward O’ Bryan who departed this life on the 31st day of October 1832 aged 44 years. This stone was erected by his beloved wife Catherine O’ Bryan of Kilalla’ (sic). The inscription on the other graveslab is obscured by moss. A third graveslab, clearly displaced, protrudes at an angle from a clump of brambles. According to local information, there are eight or nine graves at this location. In pasture, in a sheltered depression enclosed by rising ground. There is a spring, now incorporated into field drain, adjacent to SW. This possible burnt mound is visible in section at the base of a N-facing slope. It is evident as a thin layer (L 1.5-2m) of dark soil containing charcoal and moderate quantities of stone that appears to be heat-shattered. The exact limits of the layer are uncertain.
