In pasture, located on a low rise with good views over surrounding landscape of gently undulating grassland and bog. This rath is engulfed in dense overgrowth, which made inspection difficult. It consists of a slightly raised, circular area or platform (diam. c. 20m) defined S–NW by an earthen bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.7m), with a very degraded internal rim, and enclosed by a fosse (Wth 2m) with an external bank (2.7m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.8m). At NW–NNE the bank is reduced to a dilapidated scarp, and a farm road, flanked by drains, truncates the fosse and external bank. Overgrowth and areas of disturbance make it difficult to examine the E half of the rath: at NE–SE there appears to be three scarps or banks with two intervening gaps or fosses, however, it was not possible determine how these relate to the two banks on the W half of the rath. A gap or low area (Wth c. 2m) at E may mark an original entrance. In the S half of the interior, a low, loose heap of stones is visible amidst the overgrowth; in the W half there is a roughly circular, shallow hollow (diam. c. 2m); at the NNW, close to the enclosing scarp, there is a linear sunken area or pit (6m NE–SW; 1.7m NW–SE; D 0.8m), and c. 1.7m to NE of this, there is an irregular-shaped pit or depression (max. dim. c. 3m; D c. 0.7m). There is evidence of a change of level or drop in ground level in the E half of the interior and also evidence of surface disturbance. The majority of the interior and the entire perimeter are thickly engulfed in blackthorn scrub. There is another rath (MA062-111----) 80m to SW. In average pasture, located in an area of gently undulating grassland. This partly levelled rath survives as a roughly circular area (29.7m E-W; c. 33m N–S) defined on the S half by remnants of a bank/scarp, removed at W–N, and discernible at NE–E only as a slight rise or undulation. An E−W field fence cuts across the centre of the rath. Hawthorn bushes defines the bank on the S half . A bungalow is located to NW, and part of the NW quadrant of the rath falls within the garden/backyard area of the residential plot. Another rath (MA062-110----) is located 80m to NE. In pasture, encompassing a natural rise, with views most extensive to S over an expanse of rough pasture and bog, and to W over undulating grassland. This possible rath is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure; the N half appears to have been levelled by the time of the 1919 edition, where the enclosure is depicted as a semi-circular hachured area (diam. c. 35-40m E−W). It has been levelled; the ephemeral outline of a scarp, merging with a natural slope, can be discerned curving E–S. Immediately to W ground falls in a concave slope into a depression of wettish ground. In pasture, located on a rise in gently undulating terrain. There is a natural basin of wettish ground c. 50m to SW–W. Raised oval area (35.5m N–S; c. 25.5m E–W) defined S–NE by a scarp (H c. 1.5m at S; 1.8m at W); the scarp is levelled on the E half. At S the scarp has been subsumed into a linear NW–SE field wall; at W the scarp has an almost vertical drop (H 1.7-1.8m) and is faced with drystone walling; at W–N remnants of a field fence merges with the base of the external slope of the scarp, respecting its curve; at NE the scarp retains a slight internal stony lip, incorporating field clearance stones in parts. At E–S the scarp is levelled to a broadly slumped slope (Wth c. 7m; drop in height c. 1m). There is a souterrain (MA062-114002-) in the N half of the interior, indicated by three adjacent areas of surface collapse. In the S part of the interior there is a small roughly circular depression (1.2m NW−SE; 0.8m NE−SW; D 0.5m) of uncertain significance. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 26 January 2021 - MA062-114002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA062-114002-. In a rath (MA062-114001). This souterrain is indicated as ‘Cave’ on the 1837 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on the 1919 edition. It is of drystone construction and its location in the NW quadrant of the rath is revealed by three adjacent areas of surface collapse. One area of collapse (max. dim. 1.4m) opens into a lintelled passage (Wth 0.85m; H 0.5m) which extends to SE for 3-4m meters and then swings to SSE; at the point where it changes direction there appears to be an opening to NW, possibly a creep. The drystone walls of this passage are neatly constructed of small, thin horizontally-laid slabs. Located 5m to SSW, a second surface opening (max. dim. c. 0.4m) reveals a lintelled passage (Wth c. 0.8m) which slopes down markedly towards the NW for several meters. The walls are constructed of medium-large round stones. A third area of surface disturbance lies 3m to NNW of the latter, and consists of an inaccessible stone-filled cavity (diam. c. 1m; D 0.7m). Immediately to NW a slab, long axis aligned N−S, protrudes from the sod; this may be an in situ lintel. In pasture, located on a low rise, overlooked to SE by a ridge. Slightly raised, roughly circular area (diam. c. 26m E−W; c. 29m N−S) defined by a ruined drystone wall. At NE−SW the wall (Wth 2m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.5m at E) has been adapted/rebuilt to serve as a field boundary; at SE−SW a low spread (Wth 1.8m) of stones is evident in the interior 1-1.5m in from the internal wall face, possibly collapse from the original wall. At WSW−N the wall is less well preserved: it is evident here as a stony scarp (ext. H 1m) topped with a stony rim or wall footings, with basal wall courses still in situ in parts. The interior is relatively level, with a slight dip or slope down in the SE quadrant. The ground surface is uneven and stony underfoot. Slight remnants of a NE−SW field wall cross the interior to S of centre. At the N edge of the interior there is a subcircular pit (diam. 10m; D 1.2m) with heaps of loose stones in its base, and a low mound of stone and earth adjacent to it. The interior is grassy, with a clump of overgrowth in the E half. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 1m at NW, 1.5m at SE). The interior is bisected roughly centrally by a drystone property wall (Wth 1m) on a NNW-SSE axis. An E−W field wall abuts the stone bank at NE, and at its point of intersection has been expanded by the addition of field clearance stones. There are heaps of field clearance stones on the top of the stone bank, and at E–SE against its external slope. The interior is grass cover, with brambles around the perimeter. In pasture, located in gently undulating terrain overlooked to SE–S by a low heather-covered ridge. There is a road, leading to a commercial quarry at S, 20m to E. Roughly circular area (37m E-W; 40.5m N–S) enclosed by a low, sod-covered stony rise/stone bank. The width and height of the stone bank is uneven, its irregular appearance contributed to by the addition of field clearance stones, especially on the S arc. On the NE arc the stone bank is evident as a broad low rise (Wth 2m at NW, 4.5m at NE; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.4m, at W) covered in hummocks of grass. Two extant drystone field walls traverse the NW and E edges of the enclosure, intersecting immediately to N of the site; the eastern wall serves as the townland boundary. At W a short remnant of an older field wall abuts the enclosing stone bank. The interior is level and not noticeably raised. There is a small, partly sod-covered heap of field clearance stone in the S half. In pasture, located on a rise, flanked to E and W by N-flowing streams. There are good but not extensive views over the surrounding undulating terrain, with wet or boggy areas in the lowlying hollows. A cluster of ruined vernacular stone buildings is located immediately to W. This cashel consists of a roughly circular area (32.7m N−S; 29m W−W) enclosed by a substantial drystone wall (Wth 2m; int. H 1.6m, 0.5m at W; ext. H 1.5-1.6m at S, 2.5-3m at NW). It appears to straddle a natural fall of ground to N, with the result that the enclosing wall on the N arc is substantially higher, built against a low scarp. The wall is constructed of random rubble, with large boulders used in the basal courses. The internal wall face has slumped or collapsed in parts, and it is reduced on the W arc to a low jumble of stones. The external wall face is obscured by blackthorn scrub and field clearance debris at NE−ESE, but it is well preserved at SE−SW; at W−NNW it is incorporated into a later NE−SW field wall and field clearance stones are piled against the wall face so that the overall width of the modified wall here is 3-4m. A ruined 18th- /19th-century stone-built cottage abuts the wall at W. There is a break (Wth 2.2m) in the wall at N, but it unclear of this is an original entrance. The interior is level and featureless.
