In pasture, located on elevated ground in gently undulating terrain. There is a fall of ground to N–NE to an expanse of lowlying pasture and bog. A back road borders the N edge of the field c. 15m to N. A cluster of vernacular buildings, with associated subrectangular field plots, is shown here on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; the 1916 edition simply shows a shallow hachured arc, curving S–NW, incorporated at S into a field boundary. The outline of a slightly raised, roughly circular area (24.8m E–W; 28m N–S) can be traced at ground level. It is defined on the W half by a low, sod-covered stony bank (Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.7m at SW), with a flattened top (Wth c. 2m) and a fairly substantial external slope incorporating stones; it was possibly modified to serve as a field boundary. The E half of the enclosure has been levelled and is defined by a slight surface undulation merging with natural contours. There is a possible enclosure (MA093-048----) c. 100m to SE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 29 June 2022 - MA093-048: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA093-048----. In pasture, located in undulating terrain. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; shown on the 1916 edition as a shallow hachured arc (cord L c. 35m), curving S–NW, intersecting with an E−W field boundary at its NW end. An earthen scarp (Wth slope 3.5m; H 1.5m), incorporating stones in parts, especially along the top, survives in a shallow arc (L 20-25m) curving SW–NW. The scarp appears to coincide with a natural undulation or contour. There is no evidence at ground level that the arc continued to E and S to describe a full circle. There is an oblong mound (c. 12m E–W; 3-4m N–S; H 0.8-1m) of uncertain significance c. 5m to E of the scarp. An enclosure (MA093-047) is located c. 100m to NW. According to local tradition, this is the site of a church which gave Killunagher townland its name. Gwynn & Hadcock (1970, 395) identify Killunagher as the early medieval foundation of ‘Kill-Lunechair -under the patronage of St. Lunecharia.’ The remains consist of a roughly square platform (12.6m NE–SW; 12m NW–SE) defined by a sod-covered stone bank/scarp with a low internal rim (Wth 2.4 at SE, 1.5m at NW; int. H 0.2m). The SE side has a well-defined external scarp (H 0.6m) from which much stone protrudes, probably the remnants of stone facing or a wall. At NW and NE the scarp is low and less clearly defined. A linear sod-covered bank (H 0.4-0.7m) projecting from the E corner of the square platform, extending 15.6m to ESE. It forms an elongated triangular shape in plan, widest (4.2m) at its junction with the square platform, and narrowing and sloping gently downwards towards its E end (Wth 2m). The N side is defined by vertical stone-facing consisting of a single course of large contiguous boulders (H 0.5-0.7m). The entire earthwork therefore forms an irregular L-shape. These enigmatic remains are difficult to interpret; they incorporate the remains of a church. According to local information, it contains a souterrain (MA093-083002-) and was used as a children’s burial ground (MA093-083003-). In the NE corner of the same field, c. 50m from the earthwork, an earthen field bank (Wth 2m; H 0.5m) extends from the E boundary of the field for 19m to WSW, parallel to and a few meters S of the existing N boundary of the field. A number of hawthorn trees grow on its WSW end, and according to local tradition, a priest was hung at this spot.
