In pasture, on a flat terrace at the summit of a ridge, close to the break of slope at SSW. Excellent views generally, but especially SW–NW along the valley of the Trimoge River. Trees and high fences restrict views now to NW along the spine of the ridge. A circular enclosure, with a small circular feature in the centre of the interior, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. Domed circular mound (16.8m NNE–SSW; 17.2m WNW–ESE; H 2.1m at SSW 1.5m NNE), with a narrow, flattened top (diam. c. 5m) and broadly sloping sides. The mound appears to be earthen. A gap of 4-6m separates the mound from the edge of the terrace at SSE–SW, where there is a sharp break of slope and a steep fall of ground (H 3-4m). This siting makes the mound prominently visible from the S. The mound is boxed into a small modern rectilinear field. A grassed-over sunken track extends along the NW side of the field, leading to a disused sandpit in the extreme SW corner of the field (c. 10m W of the mound). In pasture, located on a rise, with good but not extensive views. Circular platform (diam. 27.8m N−S) defined by a scarp (H 1.3m at S, 1.4m at N), which has been levelled to a slight undulation at NE−SE. A sunken farm road on a NNE−SSW axis cuts through the E half of the rath –the levelled E portion of the rath lies immediately to E of the road. There is a roughly circular, slightly raised feature (8.4m N−S; 7m E−W) in the centre of the rath interior, defined by a raised rim (H 0.4-0.6m) on its W half. It encloses a shallow sunken area (diam. c. 2-2.6m; D c. 0.5m) at its centre. This hollow was obscured by overgrowth at the time of inspection but the base felt stony underfoot. The significance of this feature is unclear; it might be a partly collapsed souterrain or the remnants of a hut site. Long grass in the rath interior; hawthorn trees and brambles around the scarp; hawthorn hedgerows flanking the farm road. There is a rath (MA071-109----) 120m to NE. In rough pasture, located on a NE−SW ridge. There are good views to N where ground falls gradually to a broad shallow stream valley of damp pasture. A ruined vernacular stone-built house and a shed are located immediately to SW of the rath, and a road on an E−W axis skirts the S edge of the rath. Roughly circular platform (28.5m E−W; 22.5m N−S) defined by a scarp (H 1.8m at N & S; Wth slope 2.8m). The scarp has been modified at NE−E where an old N-S lane skirted the rath, and portions of the scarp have been dug away at S and SW, giving the rath a ragged edge on that side. The interior slopes from SW down to NE. There is no clearly defined entrance –it may have been at NE where there is a low area in the scarp. The interior is grassy; the perimeter is ringed with hawthorn trees. There is a rath (MA071-108----) 120m to SW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 19 August 2021

Roughly in the centre of a graveyard (MA071-142002-). This church is depicted on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps as a rectangular building (c. 14m E−W; 7m N−S), indicated as ‘in Ruins’ on the 1931 edition. The remains are reduced now to low wall footings (Wth 0.9m; H 0.4m), surviving to a height of 2-3 courses. The interior ground surface is uneven and stony underfoot. The W half of the church is engulfed in dense blackthorn scrub. Two sycamore trees grow at the E end. A 12th-century date for the church is indicated by a carved sandstone block (MA071-142004-), originally a capital of a Romanesque doorway (pers. comm. Con Manning, 2009) which now serves as a gravemarker, set upright in the ground to SW of the church. A souterrain (MA071-142003-) is located in an adjoining field c. 50m to SW. In a flat expanse of damp, rush-grown pasture in the base of the Trimoge River valley, with the river 60m to W of the graveyard. On the W side of the river the valley is defined by a steep-sided ridge; the E side of the valley where the graveyard is located is bordered by a gentler slope. A few hundred meters to N a high ridge forces a bend in the course of the river to W. The location lies along a natural E−W route-way across the valley with a fording point on the river (now marked by a modern road and bridge). This graveyard is depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an irregular-shaped oblong area (c. 75m N−S; c. 50m E−W) outlined by a dashed line, with a church (MA071-142001-) in the centre of the E half. By the time of the 1931 edition, the graveyard had been enclosed by a wall, encompassing a smaller, almost square area (45.25m E−W; 47.9m N−S), with an E−W road outside the graveyard at N. It is enclosed by a mortared stone wall (Wth 0.6m; H 1.1m) with a gated entrance towards the E end of the N side, and a stile roughly in the centre of the same side. The interior ground surface is very uneven, with several hollow and dips, and a high density of gravestones. Formal headstones and graveslabs dating to the 19th- and 20th-centuries are interspersed among many low, uninscribed stone gravemarkers. The ruined medieval church (MA071-142001-) is located in the centre of the N half of the graveyard. Several stones from the church have been reused as gravemarkers, including a decorated Romanesque capital (MA071-142004-). There is a slope down to the SW in the SW quadrant, marked by a SW-facing stony scarp (H 0.5-1m), extending from W to S. Immediately outside the graveyard wall at W−SW is an area of very rough, hummocky stony ground –this may correspond with the larger oblong extent of the graveyard shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. When inspected in 1988 and in 1997, much of the graveyard was obscured beneath overgrowth. A souterrain (MA071-142003-) is located in an adjoining field c. 50m to SW. Located c. 50m to SE of graveyard (MA071-142002) on a W-facing slope on the E side of the Trimoge River valley. The souterrain appears to have been built into the rising slope. It is indicated as ‘Cave’ on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps; a small feature shown immediately adjacent to it at E is named ‘Thorn’ on the 1838 map but is not indicated on the later edition. Inspected in 1988, a number of large flat slabs, partly sod-covered, were visible in a roughly L-shaped setting (6m N−S; 3m E−W) under two thorn trees. A subsequent inspection in 1997 found the massive prostrate slabs protruding from the ground surface in a roughly N−S line (L c. 7m). The three largest slabs measure as follows: L 1.7, Wth 1m, T 0.45m; L 1.25m, Wth 1.5m, T 0.25m; L 1.7m, Wth 1.1m, T 0.38m. The northern-most slab is separated from a second slab to S by a gap of c. 2m, and a gap of 2m separates the latter from the third slab around which there is cluster of large stones. Located in a graveyard (MA071-142002-), to SW of a medieval church (MA071-142001-). This architectural fragment was discovered in 2009 during a survey of the graveyard (Burke 2009). It consists of a carved block of sandstone (H 0.4m; Wth 0.2m; T 0.15m) which has been reused as a gravemarker and is set upright in the ground. A human head is carved in false relief across an angle of the square block so that it spans the width of two sides of the stone. The strong, austere face is oblong in shape, flat at the top of the head, with a robust, rounded chin. The facial features are simple but well defined: round eyes, a large, straight nose flaring slightly at the nostrils, and a horizontal groove for the mouth, with well-shaped ears flanking the top of the head. Vertical rows of small decorative bosses are carved into the sides of the stone on either side of the head. The stone was originally a capital of a Romanesque doorway and suggests a 12th-century date for the now ruined church (pers. comm. Con Manning, March 2009).
