Located in pasture, straddling the top of a rise with good views. Ground falls to NE in a short step and then levels out towards the banks of a stream, which is c. 70m from the rath. On the opposite side of the stream a flat expanse of wet, boggy ground stretches N and E. Circular platform (40.6m N–S; 39m E–W) defined by a scarp (H 1.3m at N; 0.6m at S), outside which it is enclosed by a fosse (Wth 2.8m at N, 2.9m at S) and remnants of an external bank (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 1.5m at NE). The rath is boxed into the SW end of a rectilinear field with the NNE−SSW field walls clipping the W and E−SE sides of the rath. The scarp is best preserved on the E half of the rath but is rather low and degraded on the W half. The fosse is clearly defined N–E but is evident elsewhere as a slight surface depression, partly truncated at SE by a field fence. The external bank survives N–E as a low and degraded rise; it is truncated at E–SE by later field fences, and is evident SW−NW as an ephemeral undulation, incorporating large stones in parts at SW; at NNW–N it is truncated by a straight NE–SW field fence. A causeway (Wth 4m) across the fosse at SSW allows tractor access to the interior and may be a late feature. The N half of the interior is level but there is a slope down from centre to SE–S. A slight surface depression (diam. c. 2m) is evident in the N of the interior, close to the scarp. In pasture, prominently located on a limestone knoll in undulating grassland broken by rocky outcrops. Named ‘Knockaunakill Castle’ on the 1838 and 1920 OS 6-inch maps; the 1838 edition shows a square building abutted at N and S by field boundaries; by the time of the 1920 edition only the N part of the castle is shown. A fragment of the E wall (L 4m NNW–SSE; T 0.8m; int. H 2m; ext. H 3m) still stands. It is in poor condition, largely denuded of its stone facing but retains a hint of a base batter. At its N end there is a short return (L 3.3) to WSW. The upstanding remains appear to represent the NE angle of the rectangular building (c. 7-8m ENE–WSW; c. 5m NNW–SSE), the remainder of which is outlined by a stony scarp. A field wall on a roughly N–S axis crosses the centre of the structure. A displaced lump of wall masonry has tumbled downslope c. 10m to SW. A fragment of punch-dressed stone, probably from a centred door arch, suggests that the castle was most likely a tower house of 15th-century date. At NE 3-4m from the castle wall, the knoll slope (H 3-4m) falls steeply. On the W–NW side of the castle, a gentler slope drops to a level terrace from the W edge of which there is another steep fall of ground. The terrace is enclosed by wall footings, suggesting that it served as a bawn (MA091-0190011), with the castle located in the SE corner. A rath (MA091-018----) located c. 350m to NNW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 9 February 2022 - MA091-019001: Bawn, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA091-019001-. In pasture, located on terrace on the W side of a limestone knoll on which a castle (MA091-019----) is located. Wall footings, evident as a low sod-covered stony rise, define the S, W and N sides of a square enclosure (22.5m N–S; c. 20m E–W) encompassing a terrace on the W side of the knoll. This may be the remains of a bawn associated with Knockaunakill Castle (MA091-019----), a possible tower house, the remnants of which are located on a rocky rise in the SE angle of the enclosure/bawn. It should be noted that the walls of the castle are on a slightly different alignment (NNW−SSE and WSW−ENE) to those of the enclosure/possible bawn. The E side of the enclosure is now defined by a modern N−S property wall, which cuts across the remains of the castle. The exact position of the original E wall of the enclosure, and its relationship to the castle, is unclear. There is a hint of an E–W internal division in the S half of the bawn/enclosure, and another rectangular enclosure or field plot (c. 16-18m N−S; c. 14m E−W), outlined by slight wall footings, is appended to it at N. In pasture, located on the SE bank of a NW-flowing stream. The stream borders a broad expanse of bog which stretches to N and E. Ground rising gently to W and SW. A subsircular mound (15.2m NW–SE; 12m NE–SW; H 0.6m) composed of shattered limestone fragments in a matrix of black, charcoal-rich soil. The mound is slightly indented on the SW side, and has a shallow central depression (diam. c. 3m), probably indicating the position of the trough. It is bordered on the NE side by the scarp of the stream gully, with a drop of c. 1.4-1.5m from top of the mound to the base of the stream. There is a rath (MA091-018----) c. 100m to W.
