In pasture, located on top of a NNW−SSE ridge in sharply undulating, hilly landscape. There is a short, steep fall of ground into a wettish hollow to NE, beyond which ground rises again, and a similar fall of ground on the SW side towards a stream which is 125m to W. Views are good but not extensive. A farmstead/farmyard lies immediately to SW. Broadly oval platform (36m N−S; 30.3m E−W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.8m at NNW, 1.6m at S) at SE−SSW and at NNW−N, reduced elsewhere to a scarp (2.7m at NE, 2.9m at W). The bank/scarp was modified to serve as a field boundary in the relatively recent past, and is cut quite vertically on the external slope around most of the circuit, with remnants of stone facing, now largely tumbled, evident in parts. Field fences radiate out from the rath at NW, NE and SW. There are several narrow eroded gaps in the scarp (Wth c. 1m) at NE and S, and a larger break (Wth 2m) at NNW. According to local information, the interior was tilled and used as a garden plot in the past; traces of cultivation ridges oriented NW−SE axis can be seen. The perimeter is thickly ringed with hawthorn and blackthorn trees. Part of the ridge slope immediately to SW of the rath has been cut away. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 6 August 2021 - MA071-068: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA071-068----. In pasture, located on a rise. There is an abandoned vernacular farmstead immediately to E of the rath, access by a farm road which skirts the N−NE side of the rath. Raised circular area (26.7m N−S; 25.7m E−W) defined by a scarp (1.6m at E, 1.7m at W). The scarp retains a low internal lip (int. H 0.2m) for a short length at E, suggesting that the rath originally had an enclosing bank with a width of c. 3.5m. An outer ring of field fences box in the rath on all sides: A field fence, with a stone-faced external scarp, curves around the rath at S−NE at a fairly consistent distance (4-4.5m) outside the rath scarp, and a straight NNE−SSW field wall closes the gap on the E side. The curving field fence and the flat, intervening terrace-like gap between it and the rath scarp may preserve the curve of an original fosse and external bank. The entrance may be at SE where a low section of the scarp (H 0.5m) faces a natural rise or causeway-like feature leading away from the rath. The interior is level, and is traversed by remnants of cultivation ridges oriented NNE−SSW. A shallow depression (L 10.5m; Wth 3.6m; D 0.2m) in the SW quadrant may indicate the presence of a souterrain (MA071-038001-). The rath interior is grassy. There is a light growth of blackthorn bushes on the rath scarp, and the outer fence is thickly ringed with blackthorn and ash trees and brambles. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 6 August 2021 - MA071-068001: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA071-068001-. In the SW quadrant of the rath (MA071-068----). A very shallow, grassed-over linear depression (Wth 3.6m; D 0.2m) extends from the rath scarp into the interior for 10.5m to the NE. Stones protrude from the sod at its SW end. Its significance is unclear, but it may be the remains of a souterrain.
